Funeral leaflets through the door in the middle of a Pandemic

I am prepared to be told that I am over reacting but here it is. Yesterday we had a leaflet put through the door advertising a local Funeral Director. At first i just put it in the bin because the two smiling faces of a couple wearing black garb seemed a little bit odd.
I have since become more annoyed and have rang the service and voiced my concerns to a very pleasant man who was in charfge of out of hours business.
I pointed out that I thought it was in very bed taste during a Pandemic when people like my husband have been shielding and at great risk since March.
In my opinion there is no need to advertise as people generally use firm that have been used my friends and family and reputations go by word of mouth. I probably should not have said that it seemed like Ambulance chasing but there you have it.
There will be no shortage of business for Undertakers so there is no need to advertise. The people that I have used in the past for my parents were always caring and polite.
The gentleman on the phone said that he could see my point but other firms were doing it !!!.
I would never use a funeral director who did this sort of marketing if I could avoid it. My God they will be offering a three for two next.
So my question is having I got this out of proportion or not.

I think you are over reacting.

Kolsch · 14/11/2020 12:00

You phoned them to voice your concerns? Wow.
YABVU.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 14/11/2020 12:01

YAB totally U.

I can't believe you called them to complain.

Are they not supposed to advertise for the next few years?

MynephewR · 14/11/2020 12:02

Why did you feel the need to call them? Why couldn't you just think "hmm bit insensitive in the middle of a pandemic", chuck it in the bin and carry on with your day. Yes you are overreacting.

Doyoumind · 14/11/2020 12:02

YABU. They are a business in a competitive market place marketing themselves.

38weekswithno2 · 14/11/2020 12:02

I think you're over sensitive, possibly due to being in the extremely vulnerable category.
It isn't unusual for funeral directors to advertise at all. You've probably had leaflets before and put them in the recycling without paying any attention.

PeggyPorschen · 14/11/2020 12:02

YAB massively U

pretty much every family has a person at risk one way or another, pandemic or not.Funeral companies are a business. Either adverts are tasteless or they are not, full stop. Nothing to do with the pandemic.

I struggle a bit with the idea of families going into debts to buy expensive funerals, but as long as funeral businesses offer cheaper options 🤷

ShalomToYouJackie · 14/11/2020 12:03

I can't believe you actually called them to complain! Just stick it in the recycling box and forget about it

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/11/2020 12:03

over reacting

userxx · 14/11/2020 12:03

Think you've made a tit of yourself to be honest.

Massive over reaction.

insancerre · 14/11/2020 12:03

Haha
Yes you are over reacting
A funeral director is entitled to advertise just the same as any other business

audweb · 14/11/2020 12:04

People die at any time pandemic or not, they are allowed to advertise.

LagneyandCasey · 14/11/2020 12:04

I get your point. It's not the the sort of thing I'd put on the fridge along with the plumbers phone number and the local Chinese takeaway menu. It wouldn't offend me though, It would just go straight in the recycling along with estate agents leaflets.

Silverstripe · 14/11/2020 12:04

You’re overreacting. They provide an essential service and they’re as entitled to preserve their business through advertising as anyone.

IliveonCoffee · 14/11/2020 12:06

Do you have similar complaints to the slimming world leaflets? I mean they must know that everyone has put on a few pounds and are feeling bad, so they don't need to advertise as they will have lots of business now.

Or the window cleaner, who must be able to see your windows are dirty and so must know you'll be seeking him out soon.

It sounds like a fairly innocuous leaflet, hardly a plague doctor with a bell and word art saying bring out your dead!

People do obviously go by word of mouth and experience but a leaflet through the door advertising a local service is hardly something to complain about.

jomaIone · 14/11/2020 12:06

It's business 🤷‍♀️ they have to make money as much as the next guy. I get a leaflet for Domino's all the damn time, I'm on a diet so maybe I'll ring them and complain?? I'm sure they don't need to custom as everyone loves them. Just nonsense.

NancyJoan · 14/11/2020 12:07

They are a business, if they feel the need to advertise it is because they want/need more business. It's not up to you to decide who gets to promote their services.

bettbattenburg · 14/11/2020 12:07

I wouldn't like it TBH.
I visited a website for people who have been bereaved as my Dad died earlier this year and sometimes read the bereavement forums here. Now every time I go online I get adverts about death and dying - funeral directors, pre-pay your own funeral kind of thing. Ones coming through the door as well wouldn't be appreciated as a result but if I hadn't been bereaved I'd just chuck them in the recycling bin without another thought.

lyralalala · 14/11/2020 12:07

In my opinion there is no need to advertise as people generally use firm that have been used my friends and family

And that's why firms that are not the Co-op need to advertise.

You are being very unreasonable. Businesses advertise. You can't start dictating which businesses can and can't advertise. That's madness

Proudboomer · 14/11/2020 12:07

Over reaction and the poor funeral director probably thinks you have a screw loose.

And no not everyone uses word of mouth for picking a funeral director. I have arranged several funerals and each time used a different firm picked on location, services required and price.

JammyGem · 14/11/2020 12:09

I actually think it's a pretty good idea from their point of view. I don't know any funeral directors where I live and God forbid we needed one, I wouldn't have the energy or emotional capacity to be searching for recommendations.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/11/2020 12:10

I can't believe you called them. We get all sorts through pur letterbox. I get widow insurance regularly.

I would be with you if it was the Home Credit busllshit. I can't believe you called a funeral director to complaint about a leaflet. Are you ok? Genuine question no sarcasm.

PaperTowels · 14/11/2020 12:10

Wow, massive overreaction by calling them!

And, er, not many businesses could survive by never advertising.

satnighttakeaway · 14/11/2020 12:10

Is everyone else getting this advert on the thread? The irony GrinGrin

Ha, we had this and someone took to the local residents FB page to rant about it
