To be nearly in tears at thought of dentist.

I’ve been in severe pain for nearly two weeks now, can’t eat much, not sleeping great and knocking back painkillers like they are sweets. I have a hole in two of my three wisdom teeth, a broken tooth that I pulled some of it out and the gum has almost grown over what’s left and another hole in one of my molars when a piece of tooth just fell out one day when pregnant with my fifth baby.

Even being in this much pain and knowing that I HAVE to go to the dentist isn’t making me pick up the phone. Everything about the dentist frightens me, from being unable to talk, to pain, to judgement on my shitty teeth. To make matters even worse, I also can’t cope with the thought of any sort of sedation after trauma when I was very young with a general anaesthetic.

I can’t go until Tuesday anyways because I am working but the closer it gets, the more distressed I am becoming. I am not registered with a dentist so I will have to call the nhs line. I think I will need at least 3 teeth pulled. I used to have perfect teeth then had two severe depressive episodes where I could barely function and stopped looking after myself. I do now I’m better but it’s too little too late.

There must be people like me on here, please tell me your positive stories, I need all the encouragement I can get.

Hi all, little update, I have an emergency appointment first thing tomorrow morning. I phoned my dentist and found I was no longer registered because I hadn’t been to see them since 2011. I had to phone the nhs dental line and the lady was very kind. So tomorrow morning it is. I feel sick at the thought and my stomach hurts whenever I think about it but I am also strangely determined to go and get this over with. I have barely ate for nearly three days, slept only a handful of hours and just want my life back!

I have also made an appointment with a new dentist, one highly recommended for nervous patients and even better, an old school friend is actually a dental nurse there.

Here’s hoping that by this time tomorrow I will be minus a few teeth and wondering what the fuss was all about.

Well done OP. Thinking of you Flowers

Good luck today. I went last week and had fillings, with injections . Id also had a bad dental experience previously. Hands and head were shaking in between the dentist working, but he and the nurse were great, very understanding, and gave me frequent rests.

Well ladies, I am minus a wisdom tooth! I won’t say I loved the experience but I will say that the dentist I saw was absolutely lovely, he had my tooth whipped out in about a minute as soon as the area was numb. I didn’t even feel the injection at all. A very different experience and I have resolved to register with a dentist and go regularly now. He actually said my teeth were good, yes they need a clean but he said they are strong and healthy and the issues are very minor.

The anaesthetic is wearing off and I am little worried about the pain but ultimately it won’t be anything compared to the toothache! Thanks for your support!

So pleased to hear you had a good experience!

Roussette · 18/11/2020 13:58

Well done OP! So good to hear. You had a great team there sorting you out and now you know nothing will be so bad.

I am not dentist phobic but I don't know why given my history. I;m old, I had a dentist butcher when I was a child at primary school, in the waiting room my friend who was a boy wet himself with fear before going in. A horrible man who butchered my teeth.

Then as a teen I was assaulted by a dentist, not bad, but caressing me as I was sat in the chair after he'd filled my mouth with instruments and sent the nurse out, I was frozen with fear. This was in the 70s, and I didn't report it, I know I should've done, I was only 18 and living away from home.

Now.. I love my dentist. I have had so so many problems, I have bridges, implants, gaps at the back, gum disease, the lot. But I go every three months because I know my experiences are not what dentists nowadays are about. They care and they look after you if you find the right one.

Onward and upward for you OP. Flowers

  1. Watch a “fear of the dentist” hypnotherapy video on YouTube. They really work.
  1. Bring headphones and play music REALLY LOUDLY while you’re having any treatment fine. And close your eyes. Honestly it’s a total game-changer..
  1. Drink half a bottle of Rescue Renedy before you go in.
  1. Avoid ALL caffeine.

I went from being too scared to go, and crying all over the receptionist, to having three MASSIVE fillings done, just using these tips.

Only just found your thread OP. I had a problem tooth removed yesterday that I've been putting off. It had cracked, and I couldn't eat or drink anything on that side. Near instant relief now it's out, I hope you're feeling the same.

I will be keeping up with regular paracetamol, being careful with food, avoiding hot drinks and alcohol for 3 days, and generally being a bit kinder to myself. But day 2, and the pain is less than I expected, and mine was a sod to get out! So much better than the toothache was.

Well done for getting it sorted.

crankysaurus · 18/11/2020 20:40

Well done OP! Glad it was a good experience.

crankysaurus · 18/11/2020 20:41

or as good as having a tooth it ever can be!

ColourMeExhausted · 18/11/2020 21:02

Well done OP! I remember the fear when I had my first tooth out. I lost two teeth (one a wisdom) after my second pregnancy and I was terrified of having them pulled. Turned out to be quick and painless, much easier to deal with than a filling. The dentist knew I was scared so talked me through the process. I still don't like the dentist but I feel like I can face it now. You should be very proud of yourself!

If this is even allowed... can you get your doc to prescription you a diazepam or whatever it is they use to calm you like before you get on a flight?

Can you pay extra to be knocked out?

I feel your pain op I am also frightened
Of the dentist but not to your extent.
