This is the very definition of a first world problem I know but my kids (7 and 5) were very interested in the idea of a four-leaf clover this summer and scoured the lawn without luck so after searching on the internet I decided to cheer them up by buying this product:
www.notonthehighstreet.com/plantsfromseed/product/complete-grow-your-own-lucky-clover-plant-kit
I paid extra to have it personalised and they were super excited - fitted with their home schooling plan and everything - ideal, or so I thought! The only problem was that after painstakingly growing the things it turned out to be bog standard three leaf clover after all. I revisited the packaging - covered with illustrations of magnificient four leaf clovers and also the instrucitons and no where did it mention that this could happen. Finally, I contacted not on the high street for clarification and it turns out that this is in fact just normal clover, with a 1 in 10,000 chance of actually yeilding a four leaf clover! (so with the number of seeds they supply only 1 in 50!!!). They just said the item is non-refundable and there's nothing doing. So am I being unreasonable to be very annoyed and say that they should at least change their description then to indicate that this is just some kind of very expensive and unlucky lottery?

At my primary school we had an entire patch of 4 leaf clover. We used to pick them, press them and sell them

So it must be possible to have a strain of 4 leaf?

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 13/11/2020 18:31

The pack certainly suggests it will be a 4 leaf clover, all the images are 4 leaf. a 3 leaf wouldn't be lucky

leave a review

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 13/11/2020 18:32

They've been a bit sneaky with the packaging and description, haven't they? Calling it "Lucky Clover" but not actually describing it as four leaf...just heavily implying.

LittleDoritt · 13/11/2020 18:33

OMG, what a total con.

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 13/11/2020 18:34

Have you contacted the kit maker and not just the seller?
The figures sound like the natural genetic mutation but you can get 4 leafed strains

WitchesSpelleas · 13/11/2020 18:37

4 leaf clovers are mutated 3 leafed ones. I don't know what causes the mutation, but if you want to find one, look out for patches of clover that have misshapen leaves and search there. I've found them that way a few times in the past.

katmarie · 13/11/2020 18:42

I think that's quite questionable advertising, and trading standards might have something to say about that.

DolphinsAreEvil · 13/11/2020 18:43

Could you leave a review warning other potential purchasers?

DeciduousPerennial · 13/11/2020 18:44

I’d want a refund. It doesn’t specifically say 4 leaf clover but it gives every impression that that’s what you’re getting. I’d go so far as saying that you’re considering contacting the Advertising Standards Agency for advice if they get arsey about it.

FirstOfficerDouglas · 13/11/2020 18:46

It does not say that the plants are four -leafed. The pictures are three -leafed. It says "Good luck Irish clover". I cannot see 4 leafed mentioned anywhere.

You made the association between 4 leafed and luck (a common one of course - but clover is generally associated with luck as are many things Irish) but the company is selling clover seeds - because they are lucky. You grew clover so are not entitled to a refund,

Londoncatshed · 13/11/2020 18:47

Completely misleading! Leave a review but really you should have a refund.

44PumpLane · 13/11/2020 18:51

But all the real clovers in the picture in the ad are 3 leaf clovers!

WitchesSpelleas · 13/11/2020 18:58

Yes, the inset picture shows 3 leaf clovers.

FuzzyPuffling · 13/11/2020 19:01

As a child we used to pick one leaflet from a clover and stick it to a three leaf one. DIY luck.

ShellyRay · 13/11/2020 19:02

Sorry, I meant to say that the picture of the clover (which I didn't really note when ordering) doesn't feature on the box at all - just the drawings of the four leaf clovers, so just assumed it was 'what it said on the box'? 'Not on the High Street' are just really unhelpful about it - I think if it was a genuine thing they should say something like 'Try your luck, one in 50 chance of growing your very own four-leaf clover' or some such?

CressidaTheHeathen · 13/11/2020 19:02

It doesn’t say anywhere in the description that it was 4 leaf, you just assumed... so you are BU to expect a refund, sorry.

UsernameChat · 13/11/2020 19:04

At first I thought you were not being unreasonable, but then I looked at the ad and, unfortunately, it doesn't say anything about this being special 4 leaf clover. The photographs shown are bog standard 3 leaf clovers, although the cartoon-type illustrations on the box are four leaf and probably a bit cheeky.

Shocked a company's had the audacity to charge nearly £10 for seeds you could probaby get for a few quid from the garden centre, but grudungly admire their nerve! (Obviously shit for their customers though.)

ShirleyPhallus · 13/11/2020 19:05

I’ve enjoyed the one review that said this helped someone make a recovery from an accident Grin

CoronaIsWatching · 13/11/2020 19:08

I think it is bloody misleading and I'd leave a one star review

GreatSoprendo · 13/11/2020 19:27

That is so misleading.

As if you’d spend £9.50 on seeds to grow 3 leafed clover! My lawn is full of them - I could make fortune Grin

Aridane · 13/11/2020 19:31

YANBU

Skysblue · 13/11/2020 19:37

They call it “lucky clover” many times. Lucky clover is generally known to have four leaves. Clover with three leaves is not known as lucky.

The fourth (and only) photo of clover shows a four leaf plant.

The intention to mislead is clear from the blurb.

Legally it looks like a clear cut case of misrepresentation with the intention to defraud to me.

I would be writing notonthehighstreet a very shitty letter.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/11/2020 19:40

The assumption about growing "lucky" clover is that it will have four leaves. When was the last time someone felt lucky because they came across some bog standard three leaf clover? "Ah fuck me, a three leaf clover, I'm off to put a tenner on the lottery" no, it never happened.

ivfbeenbusy · 13/11/2020 19:41

If 4 leaf clovers could be grown in this way and guaranteed then they wouldn't be rare and therefore considered lucky! I understand the advertising is a bit false but you'd have to be a bit naive to think you were actually going to grow a pot of 4 leaf clovers?! 🤷‍♀️

Flutter12 · 13/11/2020 19:45

As the picture shows 3 leaf clovers then I think YABU
