This is the very definition of a first world problem I know but my kids (7 and 5) were very interested in the idea of a four-leaf clover this summer and scoured the lawn without luck so after searching on the internet I decided to cheer them up by buying this product:
www.notonthehighstreet.com/plantsfromseed/product/complete-grow-your-own-lucky-clover-plant-kit
I paid extra to have it personalised and they were super excited - fitted with their home schooling plan and everything - ideal, or so I thought! The only problem was that after painstakingly growing the things it turned out to be bog standard three leaf clover after all. I revisited the packaging - covered with illustrations of magnificient four leaf clovers and also the instrucitons and no where did it mention that this could happen. Finally, I contacted not on the high street for clarification and it turns out that this is in fact just normal clover, with a 1 in 10,000 chance of actually yeilding a four leaf clover! (so with the number of seeds they supply only 1 in 50!!!). They just said the item is non-refundable and there's nothing doing. So am I being unreasonable to be very annoyed and say that they should at least change their description then to indicate that this is just some kind of very expensive and unlucky lottery?

Also if you’re still growing them there’s still chance to find a 4 leaf clover.

keeprocking · 13/11/2020 19:48

@ivfbeenbusy

If 4 leaf clovers could be grown in this way and guaranteed then they wouldn't be rare and therefore considered lucky! I understand the advertising is a bit false but you'd have to be a bit naive to think you were actually going to grow a pot of 4 leaf clovers?! 🤷‍♀️
My thought exactly, should be under a heading of One born every minute.
katy1213 · 13/11/2020 19:48

You should at least leave a review to balance the one that seems to think it has life-giving properties!
Although you'd almost admire their cheek - it's almost as good as selling canned air!

gigi556 · 13/11/2020 19:51

I think you were a bit naive... they can't guarantee a four leaf clover!!! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-leaf_clover

Lindy2 · 13/11/2020 19:55

A quick Google shows me a packet of clover seed costs around £1.25.

I think the packaging and price would lead you to believe you are getting more than a standard pack of seeds. Regardless of the small print.

I'd be contacting Trading Standards for their opinion.

Moondust001 · 13/11/2020 19:58

Shamrock - which translates as "little clover" - is always viewed a lucky by the Irish. It doesn't need to be four leafed. You looked at something and made all sorts of assumptions. Nobody misrepresented anything. It's a good lesson in fact checking before making assumptions about anything.

WitchesSpelleas · 13/11/2020 19:59
Shamrock
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/11/2020 19:59

I'm not convinced that the one review they have is entirely true. You may have to use water from Lourdes to achieve what they say... Hmm

Standrewsschool · 13/11/2020 20:02

I think it’s a bit misleading as the packet illustration is a four leaf clover, and the blurb describes a ‘Lucky Clover’. Most people would assume this to be a four leaf clover.

SamMil · 13/11/2020 20:27

I do think you're being unreasonable. The product doesn't say that it is 4 leaf clovers.

I'd probably just laugh and move on with my life.

Daisymaze · 13/11/2020 20:32

I think it's misleading, the entire concept and packaging is based on lucky 4 leaf clovers.

dontwantamirena · 13/11/2020 20:34

Their own website mentions both 3 and 4 leaf types:

Benjispruce2 · 13/11/2020 20:45

Twitter is your friend for this. They’ll refund.

drumandthebass · 13/11/2020 20:52

I too would contact Trading Standards

PaperTowels · 13/11/2020 20:59

YANBU. Leave a review on the product's page!

DulcimerOfDestiny · 13/11/2020 21:07

I'd leave a bad review, and if you have Twitter, spread the word there, too.

It's not really a clover, but there's a plant that looks "clover-ish" and have four leaves every time, as well as an interesting leaf coloration. Oxalis tetraphylla 'Iron Cross'. Your children may enjoy them, even though it's not quite as thrilling as finding a true four-leaf clover.

Calmandmeasured1 · 13/11/2020 21:08

The picture within the circle of green leaves shows them to have 3 leaves so I'm not sure it is misleading.

INeedNewShoes · 13/11/2020 21:17

The review on that page has clearly not been written by a customer.

Francescat · 13/11/2020 21:27

Yes, your first clue is the hilariously suspect (and only) review, OP Grin
YANBU to be annoyed though - although it’s not an outright lie, it’s not the most straightforward description.

Ravenesque · 13/11/2020 21:36

I have a four-leafed clover phobia. Sort of. Clover is so pretty and when I was ten and out for a day out in Epping Forest with dm, df and db, I found a four-leafed clover and was over the moon because lucky! Then a couple of days later my df died and ever since I refuse to look at a cluster of clover in case I find another one. Stupid, I know, but my brain just doesn't want me to go there.

user127819 · 13/11/2020 21:37

It's very clever packaging and description to imply a four leaf clover without anywhere stating that you will get one! YANBU to be disappointed but they are technically in the right, if not morally.

Brefugee · 13/11/2020 21:44

grow spiraxis (sp?) they look like big 4 leaf clover

ImMoana · 13/11/2020 21:48

YANBU total rip off.

LEELULUMPKIN · 13/11/2020 21:49

Has anyone else noticed the shocking spelling in the one and only review for the not so lucky clover?

My teeth are on edge!

Hotcuppatea · 13/11/2020 21:50

You've been ripped off. No wonder you're pissed. I would be leaving a very honest review so the next person isn't conned.
