why not regular ? i can't stand the stuff but full fat ? sounds like drinking liquid lard [boak]
i know it's an expression and what it means, before i get jumped on but all the same, are there any other names for drinks or foods that make no sense in rl ?

It's not. It's just to differentiate I think between diet and as you say 'regular'. Doesn't make sense but everyone knows what it means.

justleavemebe · 13/11/2020 15:04

I call it "normal coke and Diet Coke" hate the use of full fat wtf!

OgwdihwO · 13/11/2020 15:05

Why call it coco cola when it’s coca cola?

Dahlietta · 13/11/2020 15:06

I always just thought it was a joke. Like it was milk.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2020 15:06

I get told off for saying 'fizzy pop' Grin

romeolovedjulliet · 13/11/2020 15:08

@OgwdihwO

Why call it coco cola when it’s coca cola?
told you i didn'tlike it, can't even spell it Smile. diet orregular coke makes sense but not full fat i've only heard this said a couple of times in public but it sounds weird to my ears all the same and a bit twatty

Metaphorical.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/11/2020 15:08

It's an expression and you know what it means... that's it, I'm afraid.

Toad in the hole, spotted dick, it's not like the British haven't done stupid things to food names forever. Saltinbocca, tiramisu? The Italians are at it too!

Enb76 · 13/11/2020 15:10

'Regular' isn't a very British thing to say. Generally it would be 'normal'. People have been saying full fat since diet became the default in pubs in the mid 90's.

strawberrymilkshakemonkey · 13/11/2020 15:17

i just say coke and diet coke. surely that makes most sense?

MaskingForIt · 13/11/2020 15:21

@OgwdihwO

Why call it coco cola when it’s coca cola?
Good pedantry, but it is a brand name so should be Coca Cola.
StrawberrySquash · 13/11/2020 15:21

It was an amusing joke/mataphor because it's not literally full fat. But overused so become a bit of a cliché. It's like calling something Marmite or Goldilocks. But, hey, we aren't all literary geniuses. And it is useful if you want to emphasise that you don't want Diet.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/11/2020 15:23

Fewer syllables

londongirl12 · 13/11/2020 15:30

It's from the saying sugar makes you fat. We always say full fat coke.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 13/11/2020 15:36

I always thought it was Diet Coke and Fat Coke. Full fat really annoys me as there’s no fat in it. Full sugar coke sounds stupid though. So I just ask for “real coke, none of that diet crap” and then have a hissy fit and have water instead when they tell me they only do diet drinks AngryAngryAngry

TeddyIsaHe · 13/11/2020 15:39

We just say fat coke. Coke Zero is superior though.

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 13/11/2020 15:40

My family go one step worse I’m afraid, we call it full fat lardy coke. I suppose people call it that because it’s very clear what you want, full sugar sounds odd and regular could refer to the size or the type but full fat only means one thing.

Newmumatlast · 13/11/2020 15:48

I started saying this because I found whenever I asked for a coke when out, the server (or person buying sometimes) would naturally say "diet"? That irked me - why assume it would be diet ffs - and so I started to say full fat coke partly to make it clear I didn't want diet and partly to make it clear I have no fs about how it not being diet
BarbaraofSeville · 13/11/2020 15:53

I sent a G&T back once because it was made with disgusting diet tonic and I was told that we (we being slightly podgy middle aged ladies) always wanted slimline tonic so that's what the default choice was and I should have said if I'd have wanted normal tonic Hmm.

Full fat coke is just a slightly jokey term for the non diet version, like full fat milk. YABU for putting any more thought than this into it.

DappledThings · 13/11/2020 15:57

We extend it to meaning the difference between alcoholic or not and caffeinated or not. So I might ask DH to make me a coffee and he will check if I want full fat or no fat cleaning normal or decaff.

Tararararara · 13/11/2020 15:57

I hate the term 'regular' sounds very American to me.

Meepmeeep · 13/11/2020 15:57

Fat coke and Diet Coke, or when on holiday cola light.

ProudAuntie76 · 13/11/2020 15:57

This drives me absolutely insane

My virtual Weight Watchers leader asked me if I drink Full Fat Coke and do I take Full Fat Sugar in my tea Angry

It’s just not very bright is it? Not great if a weight watchers leader can’t tell the difference between fat and sugar!

ProudAuntie76 · 13/11/2020 15:58

I use the terms “coke” and “Diet Coke/Coke Zero/Pepsi Max etc) and “sugar” and “sweetener” btw.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/11/2020 15:59

Of course they can tell the difference between fat and sugar Hmm.

It's. A. Joke.
