Nigella's helpless carrot act

BaylisAndHardon · 12/11/2020 13:13

Don't get me wrong, I do like Nigella Lawson and her cookery programs, however:

Has anybody else noticed that she pretends not to have proper knife skills and flails around in a sexy, helpless, becarrotted damsel in distress any time she has to chop something?

It reminds me of secondary school when some of the girls would pretend to be ditzy and thick so boys would like them.

It's 2020 fgs.

@Mendocino

Well actually no, I have not been vicious but I have lived elsewhere for half my life ( N. America) Mostly successful people are admired unless their behaviour is unkind or rude etc. I actually don’t understand this weird pulling apart of a person. It is a part of the culture here to obsess over and pull apart public figures.
Well, you said 'we are vicious' but obviously you meant other people, not your kind and wonderful self!

As for your point about how the Yanks fawn over 'succesful' pubhlic figures. Well, that's nonsense, isn't it? There's a whole gossip industry in America, some of which is quite 'vicious'. Pretty sure Joan Rivers was American, for starters.

And your emotive language is typical of these attempts to shut down all criticism of people. Nobody is 'pulling apart' Nigella or being 'vicious' about her. They are simply discussing the persona that she puts out there for public consumption, at great profit to herself.

Oh, and again, how do you know the nationality of all the posters here?

EggBobbin · 12/11/2020 18:18

@BLToutanowhere there’s a fair few female fronted cook shows in fairness.

Nadiya Hussain
Those 2 welsh girls that bbq meat every week
Delia
That Irish Rachel one with all the flowers in her kitchen
Little Paris Kitchen
Lorraine Pascal

Granted they’re all a bit more ‘lifestyle’ than fine cuisine but theresMonica Galetti and Angela Raynor on tv pretty regularly

Whatwouldscullydo · 12/11/2020 18:19

I used to like that "bitchin kitchin" sone weird recipes but strangly addictive to watch and her kitchen was amazing.

A woman called sunny Anderson i think that's her name was good as well.

Think they American though not sure

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 12/11/2020 18:20

Feminism will be held back if we can’t call out women who are playing up to the seductive, helpless uber feminine trope.

I think she’s an outstanding person, and I wouldn’t want her life - so there’s no bitchiness or jealousy when I say she’s pedalling a version of femaleness that’s unhelpful to us being taken as seriously as men. Which we’re still absolutely not.

MyGazeboisLeaking · 12/11/2020 18:21

YES, This !

As pp's have said, Nigella is an astute, resilient, experienced and fascinating woman.

The faux incapable-ness(?!) And simpering, sexualisation is 🤢🤢🤢🤢

RosesAndChocolates · 12/11/2020 18:21

@IcedPurple Okay, I’ll take back the jealous comment.

I do think this thread is very mean spirited though (not all posts), the title and calling her pathetic etc.

I agree @Mendocino she is not very controversial at all. Fair enough, her banana skin curry was a bit out there but I just don’t understand the hate.

Anyway, that’s it from me. But I really admire what she has achieved anyway, I have a few of her books on my Christmas list.

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 12/11/2020 18:22

That sounds like I’m against seductiveness, which if course I’m not, I didn’t describe it very well

the80sweregreat · 12/11/2020 18:23

Monica from Masterchef is fab. She deserves a shout out!

IntermittentParps · 12/11/2020 18:24

She may have money but has 2 failed marriages.

That's a very ignorant and offensive thing to say.

IcedPurple · 12/11/2020 18:27

I just don’t understand the hate.

That's because there isn't any.

Dismissing any and all criticism of a public figure as 'hate' is childish.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 12/11/2020 18:39

I cant stand the simmering sexy schtick persona. It sets my teeth on edge. Why? I'm not sure, perhaps because you shouldn't get a tv show on the basis of fellating your own fingers and giving middle age men at home a wee stiffy? It's like feminism never happened.

MrsMiaWallis · 12/11/2020 18:42

I've met Nigella. She's teeny tiny and very starry. She's very intelligent and has huge knowledge of food. Her skin is amazing.

But her new show actively annoyed me, it just looked like a piss take. Awful food, fucking irritating music and the same old 'sexeh' attitude that we've had from her for the last 5 years.

RuffleCrow · 12/11/2020 18:46

I think she's awesome. And yes, as a bisexual woman i think she's pretty sexy. Why shouldn't she have some fun and enjoy herself after what she's been through?! Why shouldn't she express sexuality? Life is short. I'm sure Delia is on somewhere if you're looking for no frills cookery. And Jamie if you're after bish bash bosh Grin

MrsMiaWallis · 12/11/2020 18:47

Why shouldn't she have some fun and enjoy herself after what she's been through?! Why shouldn't she express sexuality?

Because its a cookery show, or is supposed to be.

Yeah, I had to check that I wasn't actually watching a French and Saunders piss take.
TopCatlivedinadustbin · 12/11/2020 18:57

She may have money but has 2 failed marriages. I may not have her money but I have been married 40 years and am very happy. Money is not everything

Her first husband to whom she was very happily married died. Don't be a smug git.

the80sweregreat · 12/11/2020 18:57

Food and sex sells , so they have stuck with the same old format!
I do like her though. She has had a bad time of it over the years and got through it all.

Wavey123 · 12/11/2020 18:59

Yabu Nigella is Queen and her programs are watchable AF

RuffleCrow · 12/11/2020 19:01

Well food, sex and enjoying onself are hardly distinct. There's a reason chocolate is said to be "better than sex"! There are plenty of po-faced "food is fuel" chefs around. Maybe just switch over and watch one of them instead if Nigella is so offensive?!

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 12/11/2020 19:04

Side note, I hate the phrase ‘failed marriage’. My beloved xh had a breakdown and couldn’t handle family life anymore, did he fail for having a mental health crisis? What kind of attitude is that? Did I fail, for holding it all together with a broken heart?

End of rant Blush

Thismustbelove · 12/11/2020 19:08

I met her once. She is even more gorgeous in real life.

I enjoy her cookery programmes. I find her recipes difficult.
Disclaimer: I have little interest in actually cooking.

RuffleCrow · 12/11/2020 19:09

Yes @topcat and her second marriage "failed" when he decided to grab her round the throat in public. That's not a "failed marriage" that's a fucking lucky escape!

the80sweregreat · 12/11/2020 19:12

I also hate cooking in any form. How people can get excited over any of it is beyond me. I do it begrudgingly , but I'd rather iron. My eldest likes cooking and can make egg and bacon and beans look ' bistro' !

Thismustbelove · 12/11/2020 19:14

She may have money but has 2 failed marriages. I may not have her money but I have been married 40 years and am very happy. Money is not everything

What is the point of your post? It only serves to highlight your ignorance and mean spirit.

the80sweregreat · 12/11/2020 19:17

She hasn't had two failed marriages. Her first husband died and the second was an abuser and they divorced. He was horrible , so good luck to her for getting out of that toxic relationship.
