Eeek friend's birthday today, and haven't been organised enough to get her something lovely 🥴. What could I buy from a supermarket - wine and chocolate... Aaaaand??

@SonjaMorgan

It depends on what she would enjoy. I would love PJs, wine, bubble bath and a good book. Our "big" supermarket does gift cards for loads of different chain restaurants.
O wouldn't buy chain restaurant vouchers currently. A few are likely to go bust in the short to medium term.

If she drinks alcohol, I'd just go with fizz or gin if she likes that. There's also flowers, nice smellies, chocs, cheese, books etc. Also don't forget M&S are open too.

What's your budget and what shops are you near.

A gift card for somewhere else. Honestly, no one wants a supermarket gift sorry.
I always get a nice supermarket gift from neighbours with 3 DC - Tony Chocolonely chocolate, red roses and a card - was well chuffed this year!
starsinyourpies · 12/11/2020 10:13

Fancy bubble bath & champagne/Prosecco depending on budget.

I know you apologised but this just comes across as very snobbish, I'm afraid.

A book? Some nice headphones?

Ysgutxx · 12/11/2020 10:16

If you're already going to supermarket today for food shopping, little harm in adding presents to your shop. Otherwise why make this non essential journey?

Instead, you could consider something equally thoughtful that doesn't need such a journey:

  • give your friend the present of your time and undivided attention with a phone/video chat, bonus is she doesn't need to find space in her house for this
  • get a present next time you're shopping, late is still fine
  • bake her a cake (or other food) using ingredients already in your house

Makeup?

KitKatastrophe · 12/11/2020 10:19

I agree with those saying a high end chocolate or alcohol product. Sainsburys do Tony's Chocolonely, Waitrose do Monty Bojangles or Godiva chocolates.

Most supermarkets sell books, so a book put maybe a recipe book if she likes cooking.

I also like the afternoon tea idea. Some supermarkets sell macarons which make a nice change to chocolates.

I agree, very snobby.

I would rather have a thoughtful gift from a supermarket (lots of good ideas here) than a voucher which is the ultimate "I couldnt think of anything and this was easy to find" gift. Especially as she wouldnt be able to use a voucher for a high street shop which they can't even use at the moment.

lastqueenofscotland · 12/11/2020 10:22

I’d go for spirits over wine
How big is the supermarket, our local Asda is enourmous so things like candles, slipper socks etc

Maybe some nice hot chocolate?

Sceptimum · 12/11/2020 10:24

Something lovely to eat or drink (her favourite indulgent thing) and something small to keep - a photo frame, or gloves, or even a handwritten letter about how great she is.

sashh · 12/11/2020 10:29

My birthday was a couple of weeks ago. Two friends came round and cooked a roast dinner - I loved that.

I also got a bag with wine, a small vodka, a reed diffuser and some candles all in tissue paper in a nice bag.

Ideasplease322 · 12/11/2020 10:42

I used to do little gift bags, a mini bottle of champagne, small luxury chocolate and a really good book (if you know her reading tastes).

Bu things she wouldn’t normally treat herself to.

My supermarket also sells amazon vouchers, which are great. You can even send them by text message so no need for the supermarket😊

Ideasplease322 · 12/11/2020 10:44

I also once bought a few cocking utensils and a cook book for a friend who loves baking. Tied a ribbon around the wooden spoons/ spatulas etc. She loved it.

AlwaysLatte · 12/11/2020 10:50

Champagne? Gin? Waitrose have some nice bath things too, how about a little pamper box with a selection of things?

Gift cards = lazy, no thought, CBA

Putting together a collection of goodies that say 'have an indulgent night in on me' from the vast selection of luxury items sold by supermarkets = friend putting some effort in and really thinking of the other person.

I certainly know which I'd prefer. Sorry, thewiseoneincognito.

tentative3 · 12/11/2020 11:23

@FrightClub

I would go for a generous handful of something expensive, like five different Tony Chocolonely bars tied up in a ribbon. Still a treat, but not 'save for best' material. Or the most expensive hot chocolate mix they do, or some really good olive oil.
This is a great suggestion, I would love a bundle of Tony Chocolonely bars! I'd much rather this or fancy olive oil than PJs/slippers/prosecco/DVD.
Fullofpissandvinegar · 12/11/2020 11:26

Yes they do. I also spotted gin and tonic advent calendars - I’d be very happy if someone bought me one of those!

Fullofpissandvinegar · 12/11/2020 11:27

Sorry, that was a reply to @cleverCatty but the quote disappeared

sounds lovely all of it - the thought that counts!

Disclaimer - for a few years I bought my DM (who is lovely!) some really pretty tealight holders - as I saw a few and they had some decorated with bees etc - I got some really nice decorated ones - glass etc.

Then one year my DM finally told me she thought a candle was the worst idea ever for a gift for someone, she wouldn't buy one herself, I worked out she meant tealight holders too - so I had to back off buying them! I wish she'd mentioned it before!

DaddysGirlForLife · 12/11/2020 12:07

Gift card!

SarahBellam · 12/11/2020 12:22

A ‘hamper’ - a box with a nice bottle of wine, some exotic fruits - pineapple, melon, mango, grapes, posh crisps, chocolates, fancy coffee, luxury biscuits, olives, pâté, cheese, chutney, oatcakes, smoked salmon.

Puffalicious · 12/11/2020 15:26

Absolutely, multivac. I've just been shopping (Scotland, so shops are open) and I got more bits that i needed in Sainsbury's than in Boots and M&S (still got a few things in there): a lovely double-walled water bottle, beautiful hand creams, delicious candle and matching room spray, a super soft throw, arts stuff and a doll (child obvs), 2 books, PJs and soaps.

sansou · 12/11/2020 15:32

Sainsbury’s have some Orla Kiely stationery in - I’ve just spent my double up voucher on a sketch book and some other books for family presents.

Nothavingfunrightnow · 12/11/2020 15:36

ideasplease322, I'd certainly be interested in "cocking utensils".

I do love a good typo 😂
