Increased tax for WFH

Not an AIBU, but what is theses days?

Have a look at this proposal:

www.theguardian.com/business/2020/nov/11/staff-who-work-from-home-after-pandemic-should-pay-more-tax

I find the argument about WFH not contributing to the infrastructure interesting, as you could have a WFH employee who formerly cycled to work and brought packed lunch never contributed to the infrastructure as put forward here.

OP posts:
katy1213 · 11/11/2020 23:05

Reckon I'm contributing plenty to the infrastructure just paying the all-day heating bills here. And feeling no urge to underwrite anybody else's Pret and Starbuck habit.

rainkeepsfallingdown · 11/11/2020 23:07

Those of us who are working from home in London are not propping up TfL anymore. But, we're probably less of a burden on the NHS because we're less likely to get ill if we don't mix with anyone and don't go out.

DB have framed this as "a tax on working from home", but I'm hearing "an enforced crowdfunder for TfL and Pret."

I fully expect taxes will have to go up across the board, but I don't think it's fair to single out homeworkers.

Tararararara · 11/11/2020 23:10

Ridiculous! DH is WFH now and we spend more on supermarket good, heating, gas, electric etc. We've also upgraded the home office. Prior to COVID he cycled to work and usually took his own lunch.

TheDowagerDuchess · 11/11/2020 23:12

They’ll do bloody anything to avoid taxing the highest earners more to pay for this, or getting big corporations to pay their taxes. This is madness imo.

Mammylamb · 11/11/2020 23:13

I can’t believe this at all. Most people who can work at home did so right through lockdown: no financial support provided. Many of us struggled through while homeschooling or looking after small children.

I don’t feel any better off financially, as I took my lunch in with me, and my bus pass cost a massive £40 per month. However, my energy bills have increased.

I do expect taxes to rise to pay for the support given during the crisis, and that’s fair enough. I don’t expect to be penalised for working from home if my company chooses to decide that’s the way fort

sst1234 · 11/11/2020 23:15

For one this is a suggestion by Deutsche bank, not a govt lobby group or anything. Second, it’s taken up by the Guardian who will try and squeeze the story to within an inch of its life. So I wouldn’t take it too seriously just yet.

safariboot · 11/11/2020 23:17

Fuck. Off.

I earn peanuts. My usual commute is a walk. I take a packed lunch because I can't afford to spend 60 quid a month in Greggs. I regularly have work I have to do out of hours from home. And when I am in the office I want my fucking desk to be mine.

And now Deutsche Shitheads think that means I deserve to pay more fucking tax?

Fuck. Off.

milveycrohn · 11/11/2020 23:17

But currently, it is not a choice. The Gov have said work from home if you can.
My DS would be back at the office if he could, but the office us closed.

Jayaywhynot · 11/11/2020 23:18

You can actually claim, I think its £120, tax allowance if you work from home and you only have to have wfh one or two days, check it out on the tax website, our employer issued a brief on it as we are all wfh

JaJaDingDong · 11/11/2020 23:20

Ridiculous. How would the tax man know you were working from home anyway?
And what about people like me who are wfh, but who need to go in to the office several times a month. Is it pro rata?

It's unworkable as well as ridiculous.

MumsDirtyTeaTowel · 11/11/2020 23:21

So it's a privilege to work from home.....

For many disabled people it's a necessity which the availability of it can decide whether someone can or cannot work.

I don't call that a privilege. And I don't think anyone should be taxed for it when during the winter months the heating bill is higher, for a start.

PastaAndPizzaPlease · 11/11/2020 23:26

7 quid a day tax would really stack up, that’s ridiculous. I take lunch with me or grab a 90p noodle pot from our shop, parking costs me 35 quid a month and my petrol is an expense so it would cost me ALOT more money.

lyralalala · 11/11/2020 23:30

How about the companies who are saving money on electricity and heating by having everyone work from home cough up.

I also think there will be a sort-of tax on working from home once everything settled down a bit. There’s no way Bt, virgin and other internet providers are going to continue allowing millions of people to work from home on residential broadband packages without a price hike. Not a chance.

jakeyboy1 · 11/11/2020 23:30

Ridiculous. Wonder how this fits with the climate change agenda? Surely WFH benefits that?

Anyway I wouldn't take much notice of Deutsche Bank they have been doing shockingly shit for some time and I have a tonne of worthless shares to prove it!

grannysbay · 11/11/2020 23:32

Suspect I am slightly worse off WFH. Don't buy lunches or coffee when I am at work, and any petrol savings from my short journey are less than the increase in heating and lighting will come to.

EasterIssland · 11/11/2020 23:33

He can fuck off. So as someone pointed out my colleague who cycled and used to it food cooked at home doesn’t contribute ? I’m glad I don’t have to pay for the overprice and unreliable bus service in my city.

Maybe. There should be a tax for db ceos etc for being tw*ts

JaJaDingDong · 11/11/2020 23:33

I hadn't thought of that, but I suspect you're right Sad

Thewithesarehere · 11/11/2020 23:34

What about those who have lost jobs and the new employers are deducting the commuting costs from pay? What the fuck? First, I don’t get paid the expected salary cos they have taken off 5k cos I am not commuting to the office anymore. And then I pay this extra tax? This is horrific. Why not tax Amazon and Apple and Facebook FFS? Why not tax bloody Costs and Starbucks? This is infuriating.

throughawindowdarkly · 11/11/2020 23:36

I'm self employed and work from home. Part of the reason why I do this is due to a health issue. I'm not sure how I'd feel about being penalized for this? I think ot would impact a lot of disabled people.

EasterIssland · 11/11/2020 23:36

Are there ads like this ? Blimey ! I’ve not game accross any at the moment.

Agree. It would be better to tax corporations and those with high wealth, so not indexed to income but assets. This man discusses it. Appreciate not all will agree. I found it interesting.
Kokeshi123 · 11/11/2020 23:39

Huh? How about companies pay some of the costs?

cdtaylornats · 11/11/2020 23:42

So forcing widows to sell the family home because they can't pay the tax out of their pension.

Kokeshi123 · 11/11/2020 23:42

Loads of WFH jobs are poorly paid and insecure. Loads of work-at-the-workplace jobs are well paid. This is the stupidest idea i've heard all week.

Heyahun · 11/11/2020 23:43

Lolz - I never took the tube to work - cycled to the office every day - and like you said also never bought lunch at any coffee shop - always took my own! So working at home or not I wouldn’t be doing anything to help the economy

In fact I’m doing more now - paying higher bills for my house, and I do pop our for lunch locally once or twice a week just to get out of the house - so arguably me at home is putting more money into the local cafes in my local area
