Does this lunch sound horrible?

One onion and one clove of garlic, chopped then heated in sunflower oil for 5 mins. Add two chopped carrots, 1 chopped red pepper, 2 chopped tomatoes, 1 can chopped tomatoes and chopped fresh basil. Simmer for 30 mins then blend, serve with fresh fusilli and cheese.

It’s for my 6.5 month old baby who is weaning, but me and DH are going to have some too.

I’m a crap cook so am just experimenting and trying new things.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

My culinary knowledge is zero. I don't ever cook and admire anyone who can produce something edible. Could someone please explain why, if you're using a can of tomatoes, you add fresh tomatoes as well? Aren't all tomatoes the same?

Sounds delicious by the way OP.

Generally I add them because they're in my fridge and about to go off.

@MrsMiaWallis

All mine had garlic in things as soon as they ate proper food
PP would be horrified as DS eating garlic bread quite happily from about 9 months

It’s literally just bits and bobs we have in the fridge mixed together - no idea if it’s going to work! confused
One of my favourite soups, a 'guzinter', whatever is on its last legs in the fridge guzinter it!

We favour it’s European cousin as a soup “ The Bitzer Soup “ what’s looking peaky goes in :- Bitzer this, bitzer that !

Scarlettpixie · 11/11/2020 18:20

Sounds good. I would add a low salt veg stock cube and you and your DH might need some black pepper on top.

No need for cheese, tuna, extra butter/oil or sugar that loads of people are suggesting. What you suggest will taste good :)

I probably wouldn't blend and would just make sure everything is well cooked and soft. It depends on baby though. If you and DH prefer it chunky, you can always just blend some for baby.

For future ref, you could add some broccoli, courgette or peas, herbs, a little pesto. All work well.

Almost everything I make (pasta, curry, chilli) starts with onion, garlic and a tin of tomatoes!

Experiment and enjoy.

Sorry OP but I think it sounds horrible. You don’t mix garlic with carrots for example.
Whaat? This is really odd advice!
MrsMiaWallis · 11/11/2020 19:08

You can add ginger to carrots yes, but not if you are making a beef casserole 😅

Pinkcadillac · 11/11/2020 19:51

Not sure about the red pepper.

If you are going to blend it, I'd grate all the carrot. There is no point in having large chunks.Oh, and I'd use olive oil rather than sunflower oil.

laudemio · 11/11/2020 22:10

Someone needs to tell the italians about the no mixing garlic and carrots rule!

I eat that sort of thing a lot, although I don't usually puree it because I don't have any babies any more. It sounds good to me.

To the people suggesting adding sugar - I thought babies under 1 weren't supposed to have sugar? My DC are in their 20s now so it could be that the advice has changed, as it has in so many other ways (starting solids at 6 months instead of 4) - does anybody know?

With a bit of salt/ pepper/ parmesan for the adults it will be great!

My usual quick pasta sauce (possibly not for a baby) is two cloves of garlic, a red onion, a red pepper, and a tin of tomatoes, with a good bit of smoked paprika and a couple of pinches of chilli flakes. We would usually have thus with chorizo (actually cooked first so everything else absorbs its oil), or pancetta, Parmesan at the end. Works as a pasta bake too whuch can be prepared in advance.

They are all tomatoes but have different flavours. I use tinned, fresh and sun-dried in some recipes.

The op's dish sounds just fine for a six and a half month old baby, for the adults too.
