Does this lunch sound horrible?

One onion and one clove of garlic, chopped then heated in sunflower oil for 5 mins. Add two chopped carrots, 1 chopped red pepper, 2 chopped tomatoes, 1 can chopped tomatoes and chopped fresh basil. Simmer for 30 mins then blend, serve with fresh fusilli and cheese.

It’s for my 6.5 month old baby who is weaning, but me and DH are going to have some too.

I’m a crap cook so am just experimenting and trying new things.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

I probably wouldn't bother blending it for the adults. And I'd add some kind of beans for protein to make it more satisfying, for the adults anyway.

Lovemusic33 · 11/11/2020 14:53

Would be fine with some pasta. Not keen in tomato based things so I probably wouldn’t eat it,

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 11/11/2020 14:53

OP, I don't know if it's still available, but a brilliant book I had when my DC were little was called 'finger foods for babies & toddlers'. Really straightforward recipes, lots of ideas as how to adapt them so parents & kids can have pretty much the same thing, and it talks you through each step without being patronising. If you're not confident in the kitchen, it might be helpful for you? Plus finger food is SO much easier Grin

ClaireP20 · 11/11/2020 14:57

Sounds good. My 7.5 month old just nibbled a jam sandwich! Nicked off his brother's plate...! I haven't given pasta yet but might try after reading this posts x ps it sounds lovely but don't expect baby to eat much - tiny tummies at that age!

Trousersareoverrated · 11/11/2020 15:03

Sounds lovely and great for the baby. I used to make something similar for DD and I for lunches. Would season mine with salt and pepper and add a lot of cheese but leave DDs as it is.

Graciebobcat · 11/11/2020 15:04

I found this book really helpful for how to introduce foods step by step when weaning DD2 (Your Baby, Week by Week)

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007AGAUT8/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Had Annabel Karmel book with DD1 and found it too confusing and difficult to follow as a not very confident cook back then. Remember buying a blender, not realising it had a plastic cover on the blades and ending up with mushed avocado with little bits of plastic. Shock

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 11/11/2020 15:07

This is the book, btw: www.amazon.co.uk/Finger-Food-Babies-Toddlers-nutritious/dp/0091889510?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

WhatKatyDidNxt · 11/11/2020 15:08

Sounds yum. Feel free to send any my way, that you don’t want!

HitchikersGuide · 11/11/2020 15:18

No! Sounds perfect.
Possibly best not to add sugar so as not to encourage dependence on sweet-tasting food.

Haffiana · 11/11/2020 15:22

Tinned tomatoes are very acid. That is why it needs a bit of sugar. If you used only fresh tomatoes then you don't need sugar.

Bluejewel · 11/11/2020 15:23

Sounds good - will probably become a staple tea with your little one ... I’d grate the carrot or put it in with the onion

laudemio · 11/11/2020 15:23

Add chopped celery with the carrots onions and garlic - soffritto
I would bother with the fresh tomatoes.
Sounds lovely though. Roasting the red peppers and adding a smidge of anchovy paste will dial up the flavour.

Bluejewel · 11/11/2020 15:24

Could use passatta instead of tin tomatoes ...

Kljnmw3459 · 11/11/2020 15:24

Passata is a good idea

Mrsjayy · 11/11/2020 15:31

I just use passatta I've not used tinned tomatoes for years one of the DC had a texture thing as a child so I switched.

Iwantacookie · 11/11/2020 15:32

I dont think you've used enough garlic personally but I'm the person who uses 10 cloves of garlic when it only calls for 1 Grin

dolphinpose · 11/11/2020 15:35

I'd eat it. Having something similar for dinner tonight.

keeprocking · 11/11/2020 15:47

@pastashapes9

It’s literally just bits and bobs we have in the fridge mixed together - no idea if it’s going to work! Confused
One of my favourite soups, a 'guzinter', whatever is on its last legs in the fridge guzinter it!
mrsfeatherbottom · 11/11/2020 15:56

@JamminDoughnuts

i would grate the carrott, it will cook quicker then
That what I was going to say.
Wroxie · 11/11/2020 16:00

If you're putting carrots into a sauce that's going to be blended, I would grate them! Easier than chopping (I hate fine chopping carrot) and will cook much faster.

time4anothername · 11/11/2020 16:01

I'd add basil at end too as it is a herb than can turn bitter with longer cooking which could be particularly hard on a child's taste. I am on the fence with sunflower oil, it's had a bad rap over recent years, went from a reputation as super healthy to inflammatory so to err on the side of caution I don't cook with it.

jessstan1 · 11/11/2020 16:03

Sounds nice. Very simple but such things are often the tastiest. I quite fancy it myself now.

itsgettingcoldoutside · 11/11/2020 16:07

Sounds lovely.

Varnas · 11/11/2020 16:11

Sounded lovely until I realised is for 6.5 months old baby! Shock
The food should be introduced 1 at a time, spaced by at least 4-5 days - in case of an allergy. Fried food, salt, sugar, garlic - not suitable for under 1 year old.
For 6-8 months old - boiled and mash vegetables is safest.

Angelina82 · 11/11/2020 16:12

Sounds good to me. Make sure you chop the carrot very small or grate it though in order to get it nice and soft for baby. 🙂
