Are some children clones of one grandparent?

I had a little girl last year (she's almost one) and she's essentially my mother in miniature form. I'm not massively like my mum (more my dad's side) but this child seems to have inherited everything from her. It's a bit annoying as I find my mother irritating to say the least. However, although I am very much in love with my baby, it seems ridiculous how like my mum she is. She looks exactly like her, she's nosy (just a standard toddler trait?), she can dance incredibly well for someone so little, she's determined... it goes on. She's also like her in small ways, like she makes mad grunting sounds when she's asleep. Does anyone else have this experience of a child being so like just one family member? Will my little girl grow to be my mum mark 2?

Children change hugely as they grow and become more like different family members ( or nothing like family members!). My son when born looked just like his dad and now looks like me. His personality has changed and I can see lots of different family members in him plus his own characteristics .They are all unique individuals !

Gretchizilla · 10/11/2020 15:07

My eldest son was the spit of my dad when little and every called him mini (grandads name) he's 9 now and looks more like his actual dad.

TheDowagerDuchess · 10/11/2020 15:09

Well not literally clones but they could have inherited a lot of genetic material from one GP

CanIPutMyTreeUpYet · 10/11/2020 15:09

It’s funny how traits can skip a generation. I’m more like my maternal grandmother but DD is more like my mum. Makes me wonder if DD will have a daughter like me! Grin

DappledThings · 10/11/2020 15:13

We got passport photos of DS done when he was 3 months old. In that photo he is the absolute spit of FIL but not in real life or any other photo. It was so strange.

My mum found a photo of her father, DS's great-grandfather as a young boy recently that I'd never seen before and DS has the same slightly hooded eyes he had.

My brother looks very like pictures of our paternal grandfather .

unebaguettepastropcuite · 10/11/2020 15:15

My sister is the spitting image of our paternal grandmother. DGM was one of many sister and died relatively young. Most of her sisters lived very long lives though and my sister must have heard hundreds of times "oh, doesn't she look like DGM" or "you're the spitting image of DGM"

Dollywilde · 10/11/2020 15:16

Definitely something in the theory of skipping a generation. DH looks the image of his maternal granddad and my newborn DD reminds me so much of my mum in her baby pictures. Things can change though, I was the image of my dad when I was a child but as I get older I’m much more like my mum (personality wise too actually)

picklemewalnuts · 10/11/2020 15:20

My son's started out clones of their dad. Now, one is very like my dad, the other not like anyone.

Personality and appearance have shifted every which way over the years. They have never been alike, but in photos of them at similar ages, you can easily confuse them. Makes no sense!

Don't worry about your daughter- with your help she'll be her own little person. Just be aware that if you look for traits of your mum, you will find them. It may be more in your eyes than in her!

LadyCatStark · 10/11/2020 15:27

My DS is the clone of my brother. Right down to their mannerisms and the intonation in their voice (and their lack of interest in spelling thing correctly!). I don’t really know why as my brother is in the Army so it’s not like DS spends masses of time with him.

Sheknowsaboutme · 10/11/2020 15:50

My DD is the spit of her paternal granny. Older folk around here see her and instantly recognise her. She looks so like her great granny too. Its pretty spooky seeing old photos.

So uncanny, she has a birth mark on her neck in the exact same place as her dad and her granny.

FilthyforFirth · 10/11/2020 15:52

How is a not quite one year old nosey?!? Genuinely so perplexed by that comment

WithASpider · 10/11/2020 16:03

Dd2 is the spitting image of my mum, same hair, same face shape, pretty much the only thing she got from me is leg length!

corythatwas · 10/11/2020 16:34

My dd is very like my mum in many ways: the same volatile up-and-down, anxious creature, fragile but with endless capacity for enjoyment. Also has same physical condition. And looks like her to a certain extent. Dd is now 24 so unlikely to change.

It's been quite good actually, to see my mother from another pov, with a different power relationship, more opportunity to develop understanding.

The funny thing is, dd and I share interests but not personality or looks, ds and I look the same and have very similar personalities but do not have a single interest in common.

user1471538283 · 10/11/2020 16:39

My DS is very much like my DF. He walks like him and his personality is similar. I apparently was like my DGGM although I think that was mainly because we are both small.

SingleHandSue · 10/11/2020 16:41

Eldest DS (19) is the spit of his paternal grandfather bar the hair colour.

Exactly the same height and build, both slender and athletic. Exactly the same ears and jaw line, and they walk exactly the same.

DS2 looked scarily like both my mum and my Nan as a toddler. We found photos of all at around the same age and you couldn’t tell them apart. He’s more like me now though.

Thehop · 10/11/2020 16:41

I’m the image of my maternal grandmother. Personality too. He died when I was very young so must be genetic as I hardly saw her.

AliceMcK · 10/11/2020 16:42

Totally. One of my DDs is 100% my Dad, there is a picture of him when he was young, my DD could be his twin. Even the way she acts is him all over. I never met my DHs mum, but my DH says one of other DDs is just like her.

likethatbutcat · 10/11/2020 16:48

Also good at dancing apparently.
averythinline · 10/11/2020 16:52

My DS is very like my mum ! less so physically now hes a man but as a child it was very noticable esp in photos - apparantly i freak my mum out as am very similar to her mum (never met her - she died just before I was born) he also has similar interests and oddly fashion tastes! although both sets of grandparents are into clothes my and dh have little interest but DS does and always has had..... they are not particularly local so he doesnt spend much time with them but my mum can always pick out what he would like...

JorisBonson · 10/11/2020 16:53

I'm the spit of my nana, I have her figure, her laugh, her sense of humour, everything... I like it that I'm keeping her alive a little longer.

AdditionalCharacter · 10/11/2020 16:55

DS3, who never got to meet his grandad, has a lot of his mannerisms, even sits like him, it's very odd but also lovely to see.

unmarkedbythat · 10/11/2020 16:56

My middle son is my dad, without his temper. They only disagree on three things in life (whether jam is nice or nasty, how often one should wash and how to achieve the highest score in a historical computer game they both love) and utterly adore one another. Theirs is one of my favourite relationships to witness :)

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/11/2020 16:57

I've got a photo from 1888 of my g.g.g granddad and my dad is the spitting image.

implantsandaDyson · 10/11/2020 16:59

My 9 year old is the double of my Dad. The way she walks, sits down, crosses her legs and the shape of her face. I didn't notice it when she was very young but as soon as she hit about 7, she morphed into him! They have some personality traits in common - they're both quite particular about how they like things fussy wouldn't come into it

TerribleCustomerCervix · 10/11/2020 17:06

Dd is the spitting image of my MIL. Like a proper clone- same shaped face, eyes, nose, massive lips, colouring. I thought it might wane as she got bigger, but she’s 3 now and still like spit out of her mouth.

Luckily I love MIL so it’s quite nice to see such a strong resemblance.
