Are some children clones of one grandparent?

I had a little girl last year (she's almost one) and she's essentially my mother in miniature form. I'm not massively like my mum (more my dad's side) but this child seems to have inherited everything from her. It's a bit annoying as I find my mother irritating to say the least. However, although I am very much in love with my baby, it seems ridiculous how like my mum she is. She looks exactly like her, she's nosy (just a standard toddler trait?), she can dance incredibly well for someone so little, she's determined... it goes on. She's also like her in small ways, like she makes mad grunting sounds when she's asleep. Does anyone else have this experience of a child being so like just one family member? Will my little girl grow to be my mum mark 2?

I’m a clone of my paternal grandfather, not just in looks, hair, tooth shape etc, but I’m also tall like him (we’re a typically short ethnicity). My son (who is biologically related to me, but not biologically my son) is also a clone of his great grandfather and me.

Personality wise we’re all very different.

If you had a photo of us all at the age my son is you would find it hard to identify who was who.

EvilPea · 10/11/2020 17:11

My son is an actual clone of my mum in looks and a lot of personality.
Which is ironic given She wanted him aborted and I’m no contact with her

howtobe · 10/11/2020 17:16

@SimonJT

Can you explain what you mean by biologically related to you but not biologically your son? I think I’m being dense Blush

My son is my mum’s double.

thepeopleversuswork · 10/11/2020 17:20

My sister has always looked very different both from me and both of our parents and not particularly like either of my mum’s parents (my dad’s both died before I was born).

When we were in our teens we uncovered an ancient photograph of our great grandfather on my mum’s side and likeness was really uncanny. It was like looking at a male version of my sister with Victorian clothes on 😂

TheChristmasPrincess · 10/11/2020 17:28

DS1 is a mini version of my dad, from build and stature, to crazy curly hair and small blue eyes.

DS2 is essentially a blue eyed version of DH, long legged and tall with light blonde hair and the exact same smile and scowl 😂

Genetics are peculiar things!

lunar1 · 10/11/2020 17:34

My children are mixed race and don't look particularly like me or DH. Their colouring is exactly between us, if you put them in a room with us and loads of people you probably wouldn't guess their parents.

If you stood them next to my brother you would see the family resemblance immediately, face shape, hair-including double crown and cow's lick at the front. They also look like they will get their height from him!

My brother's daughter has my green eyes and curly hari-neither of which he or his wife have. Genetics is a funny thing.

dinglethedragon · 10/11/2020 17:36

my dsis was, according to our gran, the double of one of her sisters as a child, looks, personality, the lot. This great aunty had died before we were born so we never got to see whether dsis grew into a similar adult. I found a photo of my dads grandad in his 70's - and my dad at the same age was his double.

Genetics can be weird!

Spied · 10/11/2020 17:40

Both DS and DD look like my mum, although they don't actually look like each other allGrin
DD had my maternal grandmother's mannerisms.
Neither DC look or behave like myself or their Dad (and I'm pleased to say they are nothing like pils)

SoupForLunch · 10/11/2020 18:00

@FilthyforFirth

How is a not quite one year old nosey?!? Genuinely so perplexed by that comment
Ha! Yes, I can see how that would be perplexing. When she comes into a room she seems to look very closely at everything, every detail is scrutinised and there's something about her manner that's JUST like my mum when she's in a new space. They both seem to fully absorb a room and the people in it. I'm more inside my own head. All toddlers are nosy though, aren't they?

DS is so similar to his grandfather- interests are the same, manner of walking, standing and speaking. Grandfather is my stepfather- there is no genetic link between them, but you’d never realise that.

Lostinacloud · 10/11/2020 18:08

My 6 year old looks EXACTLY like my younger brother Shock It’s really weird and freaks me out a bit as he just have some of my DH in there!!

MillieEpple · 10/11/2020 18:10

I am a spit of my paternal grandfather. Which is a shame as i am a girl. Apparently i have 'great aunt olive's eyes though. (His sister)

Scarby9 · 10/11/2020 18:13

My grandfather, uncle and cousin ( three generatons straight down the male line) looked identical as children and young men. Apart from the fact one photo was sepia, one black and white and one colour, you would have said they were pictures of the same person at each age. My uncle looks different as an old man, but my cousin now at 50 still looks like his grandad did at that age.
What is interesting is that my grandfather was illegitimate andhis father is 'unknown' on official documents. His mum was a farmer's daughter who married a farmer and brought my grandad up in a loving home.
Except we know who his dad was...kind of. There are three pictures taken around 1905ish of the farm workers and there, plain as day and unnamed, is rhe clone of my grandad, uncle and cousin!

Devlesko · 10/11/2020 18:17

My first grandchild is like me, because her dad is so much like me.
There are certain features that are really apparent, and everyone comments on it.
I'm always firm and state it's only a small percentage of DNA and because ds looks like me.

Devlesko · 10/11/2020 18:19

Scarby

I think it's My Heritage where you can have those old sepia photo's changed to colour. They are truly amazing.

MillieVanilla · 10/11/2020 18:27

According to the in laws, DD is, of her grandmother, who she is named after quite handily (when she does something slightly naughty they always say, well you called her after mum to dp).
I never met her unfortunately but she was a force to be reckoned with.
DD is the same, fiercely protective of family, mates and those more shy or unlikely to stand up for themselves. She could sell ice to Eskimo, is queen of blagging and has a wit far beyond her years. And apparently, that's exactly as with her gran.
I'm also very like my late gran on my dad's side, we even look exactly the same as her, it's quite uncanny.

amusedbush · 10/11/2020 18:38

I look uncannily like my mum’s brother and have since I was a small child. There are a few photos of me where I truly look like him in a wig Blush

My brother takes after my dad’s side of the family. A few years ago my granny showed us photos that my dad’s cousin in Australia had sent over, and his son was the spitting image of my brother.

PatsyStone39 · 10/11/2020 19:10

My son is my mum reincarnated.

When we went for our 4D scan, it was like looking at her pop up on the screen. I actually turned to my partner and said "Oh, god...she's back". I'm still trying to work out if that's a good thing. lol If he starts to nag me incessantly when he learns to talk, then it's definitely her. Grin
