The journalist who faked the bank statements could have said no, I don’t have much sympathy for him really.

x2boys · 10/11/2020 13:12

Hadn't she already spilled the beans at that point with the Andrew Morton book ,I can't remember the timeline ?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/11/2020 13:12

@Mrsjayy

It's just odd why now.
I think because it has only just come to light!

Ooops! That posted too soon!

But yes, it will be interesting to see what else is is uncovered, or hidden, with this!

That journalist was touted as The Great Panjandorum at the time, was instrumental in getting the forgeries made. He rode high on his own fame for a very long time!

I saw something on the news last night but didn’t really understand it. How did some forged bank statements get her to do an interview with MB?
Whose bank statements were they? What was on them?
It’s clear as mud to me.

GroundAlmonds · 10/11/2020 13:14

@nosswith

Very poor taste to pursue a seriously ill man. Sadly Earl Spencer doing this does not surprise me.

Let Diana rest in peace.

This might be some belated justice for Diana.

It helps explain some of her more paranoid and damaging behaviour, including what she said about Tiggy LB.

Anyway, you can’t just let someone get away with serious wrongdoing because they are mildly or moderately ill. (He was photographed walking in foul weather on Friday, looking largely okay).

userxx · 10/11/2020 13:15

I saw a clip on the news I wasnt really paying attention ,? He's quite unwell with COVID as well isn't he ?

Didnt look that ill with his Indian takeaway and wine supply.

LoseLooseLucy · 10/11/2020 13:16

“He spoke about the impact the experience had had on his life after he was reportedly asked by Mr Bashir to create two bank statements in 1995. He claimed these falsely showed that members of the royal household were being paid by security services to spy on the princess.”

Bloody hell 😬

Mrsjayy · 10/11/2020 13:17

I was no Diana fan but she really was used and abused in her life time but the attention she craved was her downfall in this interview, I think we forget how young she was when she married Charles.

Kljnmw3459 · 10/11/2020 13:19

Waiting for "some concerns were found during the investigation and the broadcaster has reported that lessons have been learned " isn't that the usual outcome of any inquiry?

PicsInRed · 10/11/2020 13:19

@Mrsjayy

It's just odd why now.
Rehabilitate Charles before he takes the throne - trying to make him less of the crummy family man he is.
Redcrayons · 10/11/2020 13:20

@PinkiOcelot I think the gist is that the designer forged some bank statements to suggest family and/or friends were being paid for stories about her, so she was more inclined to talk about her side.

BigBadVoodooHat · 10/11/2020 13:20

@TheQueef

Dead?
That's pretty much the first thought that most people are going to have, given the hysterical and context-free thread title, coupled with the fact that he's known to be seriously ill just now.

@MNHQ, any chance of amending the thread title for clarification?

GroundAlmonds · 10/11/2020 13:22

That’s just it though. It turns out that interview probably only happened because Bashir convinced her of a whole shopping list of lies, including that William was wearing a watch that was recording her unawares and that her own senior staff had taken large kickbacks to betray her.

It wasn’t attention seeking from her. He actively sought her ought, groomed her brother with forgeries, her brother then arranged to introduce them and Bashir then laid on one lie after another backed up by yet more forgeries. She thought she was outmanoeuvring a conspiracy against her by speaking over the establishment’s heads to the public.

I don’t even like the woman, but what Bashir did to her was evil, and criminal. She must have felt completely cornered and completely alone.

The bank statements purported to show that one of Earl Spencer's employees had been selling stories about him to the press which fed into Diana's paranoia that she was under survellience and I think helped persuade her to do the TV interview

That's how I understand it anyway

Ponoka7 · 10/11/2020 13:22

"As they say you can’t con an honest man or woman."

Tell that to the innocent families of the phone taping scandals or those who've been tricked into giving interviews, spied on. Journalists had a lot to answer during the miners strike and Hillsborough. I could go on. Those of us who were around during this also remember Colin Stagg.

It's a shit saying and whoever 'they' are needs to stop it.

Why are they going after the Catholic Church? Some of the cases go back 40 years.

Why do we go after dead clebs like Saville?

Journalists need to be held accountable. It isn't ok to say that we'll ignore it because you've kept it hidden for so many years.

Some people hold a lot of power and we need cases to become historical to be able to get justice. People need to be replaced, die etc to get things properly investigated.

RaspberryCoulis · 10/11/2020 13:23

I watched the documentary at the time. Everyone did. Diana knew EXACTLY what she was doing and wanted to get her story out there.

Why after 25 years they are now saying she was "conned" into it I have no idea. She might not have been an academic star but by 1995 she was a switched-on, canny operator who had 15 years of media manipulation under her belt.

satnighttakeaway · 10/11/2020 13:24

@Kljnmw3459

I think the BBC have fully admitted the allegations haven't they?
CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/11/2020 13:25

Amen the title? OK! If you think it needs to be amended.

And again, my apoligies for posting, listening and looking. I forgot that some sections of MN posters can't stand to see an incomplete thought...

... here's another. Why not add to the thread instead of choosing to be all superior because I posted on the fly? Or just move on, if there's nothing sufficiently 'correct' for you to see here!

OP posts:
Ponoka7 · 10/11/2020 13:26

They did to Diana what abusers do to their victims. Isolate and gaslight. This was all after her declaring that she did have mental health issues. They went in for the kill. He had to resign over the comments about Sarah Palin. He needs to answer this as well.

cocopops · 10/11/2020 13:28

@Redcrayons

I don’t understated why this is news now? It would barely be of interest if she was still alive, but given that she’s been dead for more than 20 years I can’t see how it’s relevant.
This. Let the poor woman rest in peace. It can’t be undone.
LoseLooseLucy · 10/11/2020 13:28

No need to amend the title, the context is there 4 posts in.

justasking111 · 10/11/2020 13:29

Martin Bashier ill?? No just hiding in my opinion.

PicsInRed · 10/11/2020 13:30

I think the BBC have fully admitted the allegations haven't they?

They're being unusually cooperative for an organisation rife with concealed paedophiles.

This has undoubtedly come from the Royal Family.
