Caught speeding & drop off

I know I’m unreasonable.

I work for myself but due to timing of when I started working for myself, I’m not eligible for any gov help. So, I’ve had to pick up some contracts at lower pay.

Last week, when collecting DC from school the full parking was full. I had to go round and round, was late for pick up, and spent 40 mins on what should have been a 10 mins trip.

The following day, I was an idiot. There is no excuse. But I sped on my way to pick up. Probably did 40 in a 30 zone. No excuse and I feel awful thinking about it.

I saw the police in hi via jacket pointing a handheld speed gun at me. I don’t think they had someone else at the end to stop people. It was literally the one person.

Could I have been caught? If I lose my license, it will be even harder with work and pickups. I can’t believe I’ve been such an idiot.

Why would you lose your licence?

TanteRose · 10/11/2020 06:57

you'll get a fine?
not lose your license unless you already have points taken off it...

BigSandyBalls2015 · 10/11/2020 06:57

You won’t lose your licence due that. Will be a fine and 3 points or a virtual speed awareness course so don’t stress too much.

That’s assuming you don’t already have loads of points on your licence?

WotWouldCJDo · 10/11/2020 06:57

Could I have been caught?

Doing 40 in a 30, past a police officer holding a speed gun pointed in your direction?

Silverstripe · 10/11/2020 06:58

I don’t think you’re likely to lose your licence if this is your first offence - if they did catch you and decide to press ahead you will probably get 3 points and a £100 fine. You can get more than that if it’s deemed warranted, but unless this tips you over 12 points you won’t be disqualified from driving.

Shoxfordian · 10/11/2020 07:00

You're not going to lose your licence unless you already have 9 points

WhentheDealGoesDown · 10/11/2020 07:00

You most likely did get caught and will most likely have the choice of a speed awareness course though I don’t know if these are still running at the moment, I doubt you were going fast enough to lose your license. Maybe 3 points and a fine if no courses

glitterelf · 10/11/2020 07:01

Are you even sure it was the police ? Sometimes residents do this and send out letters to remind people not to speed. Even if it was the police you would be offered a speed awareness course.

Icequeen01 · 10/11/2020 07:01

If you were really doing that speed then you won't lose your licence. I was caught by a speed gun doing 34 in a 30 limit. I was given the option of 3 points on licence or a speed awareness course. I did the course. If you were caught (which it does sound as though you were) you should receive a letter within 21 days.

Meepmeeep · 10/11/2020 07:08

Why ask on here? Surely you’re better searching and finding the answer on a reputable website. Also, nobody here can answer as you’ve been vague. You haven’t stated if any, how many points you currently have. 12 points to lose your license, 6 if you’ve been driving for up to 2 years.

Sadandstupid · 10/11/2020 07:31

I’ve been searching online and I can’t find the answer.

No points in license but qualified less than 2 years ago.

I feel so stupid for speeding. There was no reason to and I still did it. I cannot really afford a fine either but I will have to suck it up.

OP posts:
SonjaMorgan · 10/11/2020 07:48

You might be offered a speed awareness course. If not then you would only get 3 points and you can have up to 6 in first 2 years.

StandWithYou · 10/11/2020 07:49

If you can go for a speed awareness course - i found the one I went on really effective as it changed the way I drove. Plus no points or impact on insurance.

ExclamationPerfume · 10/11/2020 07:52

Just park elsewhere. Not every school has the luxury of parking. We had to walk from a few streets away. You will get points on your licence and a fine.

AlwaysCheddar · 10/11/2020 07:53

Wasn’t there a change in law a while ago so your licence, if you have it under 2 years, is revoked if you get 6 points?

ExclamationPerfume · 10/11/2020 07:55

www.gov.uk/penalty-points-endorsements/new-drivers @AlwaysCheddar you are right.

27Yardsofdentalfloss · 10/11/2020 07:55

It depends on what speed you were recorded at, as to whether you get automatic points/fine, or the speed awareness course. In a 30 zone, they allow you up to 10% + 9 mph so in other words up to 42 mph you get the choice. Over 42 and it will be automatic points but the amount depends on how far over the limit you were. Unless you were racing round at 70mph it's very unlikely you'd lose your licence!
I got caught last year doing 38 in a 30 zone and I did the awareness course (be warned, you do have to pay for this, it cost around £100 so much the same as the fine, only it doesn't stay on your record).
I think at the moment they might be offering them online instead of in person.
Try not to worry. I'm not condoning speeding, but you weren't the first and you won't be the last.

Ifailed · 10/11/2020 08:00

First off, well done OP for accepting what you did was wrong, many on here seem to think motoring law doesn't apply to them.
Like others, I think you'll get a choice of a fine and 3 penalty points, or pay to go on a speed awareness course. As to insurance, If your insurer asks whether you've attended a course, you have to tell them, but not all do.

EasttoWest · 10/11/2020 08:05

As per @27Yardsofdentalfloss post it’s 10% + 9 I got caught at 41!! I had literally pulled off the motorway and over a roundabout as the road was a dual carriageway I had wrongly assumed it was 40mph! I just followed the traffic speed in front to be honest! So I reckon a few of us got caught.

Speed awareness course was useful and I am slower in other situations where I might speed (e.g. the motorway)!

notapizzaeater · 10/11/2020 08:08

A friend just done a speed awareness course by zoom - strange times we are in !

LagneyandCasey · 10/11/2020 08:13

Your life sounds stressful, op. Even if you don't get caught I think this will have given you a shock and you will be unlikely to do it again. Unfortunately some people speed all the time and never get caught, but others that are usually careful drivers have one moment of stupidness and get caught. It's sods law.

It's never worth it. You rarely actually save time. When I crashed into my next doors pillar a few years ago due to rushing and stress it was such a wake up call. It was a big hassle getting it sorted. Now if I'm tempted to go a bit faster or take a silly risk I remind myself that it's not worth it to save a minute or two.

Try to reduce the stress of pick up if you can. Is there any parking a bit further away from school with a quick walk?

vanillandhoney · 10/11/2020 08:14

You'll either get a fine and points or a speed awareness course (virtually!).

If you've had your license under two years I would opt for the course - if you get six points within your first two years then you'll lose your license.

WhoWants2Know · 10/11/2020 08:18

40 in a 30 might be over the threshold for the speed awareness course, so it's more likely to be points and a fine.

DickAndSizzy · 10/11/2020 08:21

The threshold is the speed limit + 10% + 9mph, so 42mph would be the cut off for a 30 zone.

I suspect it'll be the coruse, OP.

DickAndSizzy · 10/11/2020 08:22

Some nice details here, that might be usefu to read: blog.passmefast.co.uk/driving-law/speed-awareness-courses/
