Caught speeding & drop off

I know I’m unreasonable.

I work for myself but due to timing of when I started working for myself, I’m not eligible for any gov help. So, I’ve had to pick up some contracts at lower pay.

Last week, when collecting DC from school the full parking was full. I had to go round and round, was late for pick up, and spent 40 mins on what should have been a 10 mins trip.

The following day, I was an idiot. There is no excuse. But I sped on my way to pick up. Probably did 40 in a 30 zone. No excuse and I feel awful thinking about it.

I saw the police in hi via jacket pointing a handheld speed gun at me. I don’t think they had someone else at the end to stop people. It was literally the one person.

Could I have been caught? If I lose my license, it will be even harder with work and pickups. I can’t believe I’ve been such an idiot.

You most likely did get caught and will most likely have the choice of a speed awareness course though I don’t know if these are still running at the moment

They’re being done by Zoom. So I’ve been told... Blush

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 10/11/2020 09:12

@StandWithYou

If you can go for a speed awareness course - i found the one I went on really effective as it changed the way I drove. Plus no points or impact on insurance.
Not at 40 in a 30 here but may vary nationally
AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/11/2020 09:13

There has been a couple of times that I was sure I'd been done but nothing ever materialised, so could happen.

JamminDoughnuts · 10/11/2020 09:19

i drove over 30 through a speed camera the other day, distracted by my mother on the way to a national trust garden!
i immediately put my foot on the break and didnt see a flash of light, i take it you didnt see the policeman op?

NeonGenesis · 10/11/2020 09:19

Even if I don't get caught, I will put £100 toward a charity donation

Why?

KaptainKaveman · 10/11/2020 09:21

OP you won't lose your license. I was filmed doing 34 in a 30 zone a while back (I hadn't even realised I was over the limit) and I elected to take an online speed awareness course. I found it really useful, interesting, and it has made me a lot more aware of my driving speeds (which is the point, obviously).

Athers666 · 10/11/2020 09:22

Most likely you'll be offered the speed awareness course. They are being done online at the moment. My husband had to do it recently using Microsoft Teams and it lasted about 3 hours. He said it was alright and the course host was really nice. You do have to pay for it though although I'm not sure how much it was. You won't lose your licence. Don't worry too much :)

TheDogsMother · 10/11/2020 09:25

36 in a 30 here so I did a speed awareness course via Zoom earlier this year. The course host was a Road Safety officer, it was very well structured and a bit of an eye opener about triggers for speeding and the ramifications of even a mile or two over the limit. You won't lose your license.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 10/11/2020 09:26

Why are you giving £100 to charity when you sound like you're on very shaky financial ground and you have kids to feed? Why?
And why are you quitting your extra contracts?

You made a mistake; speeding bad. But now you're making more mistakes. Why?

Stop being so childish. Keep your job because you need the money. Dont throw away £100 at a time when you just dont have that sort of money going spare.
Accept whatever fine or points you get or take the course if it is offered.
And park somewhere else then walk instead of driving round in circles for 40 minutes.

ittooshallpass · 10/11/2020 09:26

I have submitted my notice for the additional work I was doing.

What do you mean OP? You've handed in your notice? If you have, I have no idea why?

MissScarletInTheSnug · 10/11/2020 09:27

OP sounds like you are having a tough time at the mo, go easy on yourself, you made a mistake.

I got done at 66 in a 60 - similar situation, held up in traffic so rushing to make up the time, stressed, late etc. I shouldn't have done it but I did.

I got offered 3 points and a fine, or to pay for a speed awareness course which I did last week via Zoom.

IIRC from the fixed penalty notice, they have 14 days to send it to you, so if you haven't heard by two weeks time then you were under the limit.

MatildaTheCat · 10/11/2020 09:27

@satnighttakeaway my insurers ask if I have attended a speed awareness course in the past five years so yes, you get clobbered with that whether you accept the points or not. I suppose it may vary between insurers.

OP I don’t think you need to start wearing a hair shirt, just learn from this and move on. More slowly obviously.

JamminDoughnuts · 10/11/2020 09:27

@ittooshallpass

I have submitted my notice for the additional work I was doing.

i assume it made op late
LagneyandCasey · 10/11/2020 09:30

Don't be so hard on yourself, op Flowers. No one was hurt. You've learned a valuable lesson.

Food banks are crying out for donations if you feel the need to do something, we're doing a reverse advent with some Christmas treats, but being a safer driver is more than enough.

ArchieStar · 10/11/2020 09:35

OP, stop being so hard on yourself. You made a mistake. You got caught. You will most likely get a fine/points, please stop being so hard on yourself/making a charity donation/handing notices in because they are not needed!

SomewhereInbetween1 · 10/11/2020 09:36

@DickAndSizzy

The threshold is the speed limit + 10% + 9mph, so 42mph would be the cut off for a 30 zone.

I suspect it'll be the coruse, OP.

Is that definitely true? My driving instructor used to tell me that councils could set their own limits for the amount of give their cameras would have before flashing, assume it's the same for the police?
Atalune · 10/11/2020 09:36

Don’t punish yourself!

It happened. You got a fright- it’s served it’s purpose. You have to leave earlier to do the school run or park farther away. Get up a bit later or give yourself 1 hour of an eve to get a head start on work?

You may get a fine and do the course. It will be ok. Worse things happen. Give yourself a break.

I’ve done the course and it was really interesting.

D4rwin · 10/11/2020 09:41

If you get offered the course then please take it. They're quite good if you engage with it and more than one person has learned something (a worry, but I guess once you've passed the test it's easy to forget some of the details). Oh, I have seen a person removed from one course for taking the piss (They use a local venue). So do engage! As I believe if you don't complete the course you get the fine.

ClaireP20 · 10/11/2020 09:43

This happened to me - I got a fine, and was offered either points on my license or a speed awareness course. I went to the course, which was actually really good, and lasted one morning. They showed a video of a huge pileup on the M25 and a few other horrible things, also how to ignore tailgaters. I learned from it, and was glad not to have the points. You'll be fine OP.

satnighttakeaway · 10/11/2020 09:43
@satnighttakeaway

When you receive your renewal letter, they ask you to declare any relevant changes since you took out insurance previously. It’s always your responsibility to tell them everything and they can choose whether to continue to offer you insurance and adjust your premiums accordingly.

Being caught speeding by the police is a material fact.
It’s irrelevant if you’re sent on a course instead of having penalty points as you only get sent on a course when you’ve been caught speeding!

You can guarantee that if you didn’t tell them and you needed to make a claim, they would check with DVLA and discover any speeding penalties and would refuse to cover your claim.
Clearly my insurers didn't get that memo

Caught speeding & drop off
Keratinsmooth · 10/11/2020 09:46

Either 3 points or speeding course most likely.

Floralnomad · 10/11/2020 09:48

@Sadandstupid pull yourself together and stop being so dramatic , you made a mistake and you may have got caught , why would that make you hand your notice in at a job you obviously need and donate money to charity .

vipersinc · 10/11/2020 09:49

If you get six points you will lose your licence and have to retake your test.

Sadandstupid · 10/11/2020 09:54

In the past, all my contracts were around school pickups. I had an hour - although I only needed 10-20 minutes.

With covid, I lost some of my contracts and I have to made up the money. So, I took on other contracts which allowed me 30 mins for school pickup.

When lock down started again, loads of parents packed at pickup and I spent 40 mins driving around looking for parking. The following day, I was in a rush trying to get there early to get parking. The speeding only saved me 2-3 minutes. I was not being logical.

It was just a lot of things at the same time. I'm not excusing the speeding but I was an idiot. I was not thinking straight.

I cannot cope with the additional contracts and I've given my notice. I will have to manage.
