Can I play music in my shared garden?

We live in a Victorian mansion block, so pretty well sound proofed. There are about 15 flats, all looking out over a shared garden.

The gyms are closed, and until recently I was really enjoying going to a HIIT class at my local leisure centre. It's really hard going and I was starting to see & feel a real change in my body.

In an attempt to prevent myself from sliding backwards, I want to do my own HIIT class in the shared garden. There isn't enough space inside, and I don't think jumping up and down would be desperately nice for the people below us.

I've made a class up based on what I would be doing in the gym, but my question is whether it would be unreasonable to take a speaker out and play music while I do my 'class'. It would be 25 minutes between 6 and 6.25, and then I'll go out for a run to get a bit of cardio in.

I wouldn't play it super loud, but it's a closed area, so even when the local teenagers play music on their phones, if you've got your windows open you can REALLY hear it.

I could certainly do the class without music, but it would be harder to keep the motivation going and less fun. Using headphones doesn't work because no matter what I use they fall off / out.

I feel like I've written a LOT more here than anyone really needed. Sorry. Basically: can I play music and a medium volume in my shared garden for 25 minutes in the evening three times a week?

No. Wear headphones.

stillfeelingmad · 09/11/2020 11:15

During the day maybe but not at 6am that's ridiculous

MrsSpringfield · 09/11/2020 11:15

Absolutely not. People are WFH. Or just don't want to hear your music in a communal space.
Wear headphones

stillfeelingmad · 09/11/2020 11:15

Oh sorry just seen it's evening! I think that's firn then really although if it's going to be regular shop around for sport headphones :)

Notcontent · 09/11/2020 11:15

Get some headphones - you can get some which are designed for running and exercising.

AiryFairyMum · 09/11/2020 11:15

Definitely not. Get better headphones.

burritofan · 09/11/2020 11:17

I thought you were being VVVVVVU when you said 6 to 6.25, but then you clarified it was evening, not morning m. I’d still hate you if you were my neighbour but I’d be less inclined to create an effigy of you. I’d still seethe and make mental notes to never take in your parcels or do other neighbourliness again.

Just do it without music.

HedgehogintheFog · 09/11/2020 11:18

If the shared garden is empty I think it would be okay, but you will probably know if your neighbours' might be the sort to complain. If there are other people in the garden (assuming it's small enough to disturb them but big enough to social distance), then I don't think so, sorry. You'd be better off with headphones I think if you are worrying about it. As PPs have said, there are plenty designed for sport.

PhlegmyHead · 09/11/2020 11:19

Wear headphones or play music in your house. It's unfair to others to take up a shared space with your noise

Thehop · 09/11/2020 11:19

No you can’t I’m sorry.

Full of admiration for you getting fit and staying focused though

LolaButt · 09/11/2020 11:19

Nope. I would be tipping a cold bucket of water out of the window if someone was doing that where I live.

Notcontent · 09/11/2020 11:20

The thing is - you might only do it for half an hour, but imagine if everyone in your building did the same at different times of the day...

PhlegmyHead · 09/11/2020 11:20

And there are sports earphones designed for this - use the money you'd save on your gym membership to buy some.

Excited101 · 09/11/2020 11:20

Get better headphones, I’d be really pissed of if you were my neighbour

LittleGwyneth · 09/11/2020 11:20

Six PM - to clarify. Six AM would be absolutely evil (and I will be very firmly asleep).

I don't think this would bother me if I were a neighbour but why can't you just wear headphones?

Flittingaboutagain · 09/11/2020 11:21

No way. I am WFH until 8pm most days and I'd find it so distracting.

Hearing someone else's music in the shared garden would be so annoying even if I wasn't working though! Wear headphones or do it silently.

sittingonacornflake · 09/11/2020 11:22

Have a little google for some good in ear Bluetooth headphones that stay in whilst exercising. I know Bose do some. You could then keep the, in whilst you run and maybe push harder on your run too, if music motivates you. Well done for keeping up the fitness!

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 09/11/2020 11:22

Well you can of course but you shouldn't

It is selfish wanker behaviour- my needs trump everyone else's because I am a precious snowflake.

SlippersForFlippers · 09/11/2020 11:23

I would do it in that scenario.

Mumdiva99 · 09/11/2020 11:23

Yes. Go for it. Keep it quiet So only you can hear it. Point the speakers away from the windows. Turn it off by 6:30 so any babies being put to bed are not disturbed.

anniegun · 09/11/2020 11:23

Buy some cheap sports earphones

Pootles34 · 09/11/2020 11:24

No, it's really antisocial. Find a quiet spot elsewhere where you won't bother anyone - I use a carpark that isn't used during the week. No houses nearby. Also benefit of a jog there and back as a warm up!

Sparklfairy · 09/11/2020 11:24

So you'd rather inconvenience all your neighbours than inconvenience yourself putting earphones back when they fall out? Hmm actual headphones (that go over your ears with a band across your head) won't do this anyway, so surely buy some of those?

Cosmos45 · 09/11/2020 11:24

As everyone else has said wear headphones. I have wireless headphones I used for exercise, they are over ear ones specifically designed for sports wear and very comfortable. This means I can play music at full volume and don't have to piss off the neighbourhood whilst i'm at it.
