Can I play music in my shared garden?

We live in a Victorian mansion block, so pretty well sound proofed. There are about 15 flats, all looking out over a shared garden.

The gyms are closed, and until recently I was really enjoying going to a HIIT class at my local leisure centre. It's really hard going and I was starting to see & feel a real change in my body.

In an attempt to prevent myself from sliding backwards, I want to do my own HIIT class in the shared garden. There isn't enough space inside, and I don't think jumping up and down would be desperately nice for the people below us.

I've made a class up based on what I would be doing in the gym, but my question is whether it would be unreasonable to take a speaker out and play music while I do my 'class'. It would be 25 minutes between 6 and 6.25, and then I'll go out for a run to get a bit of cardio in.

I wouldn't play it super loud, but it's a closed area, so even when the local teenagers play music on their phones, if you've got your windows open you can REALLY hear it.

I could certainly do the class without music, but it would be harder to keep the motivation going and less fun. Using headphones doesn't work because no matter what I use they fall off / out.

I feel like I've written a LOT more here than anyone really needed. Sorry. Basically: can I play music and a medium volume in my shared garden for 25 minutes in the evening three times a week?

If you need a speaker it's too loud. Either use your phone on low volume or use earphones.

Try something like these - they are called sleep headphones, I can't imaging being able to sleep in them but I wear them when I'm cleaning the house or running, they are great and stay put - amzn.to/3n0xTzA

I think apple devices allow 2 people to bluetooth to the same thing. Also it's very different from child rearing

Zerowillpower · 09/11/2020 14:25

Absolutely not. And I wouldn’t be doing anything that would encourage people from 15 other flats that playing music in the garden at any time of day was fine. But then I HATE other people’s noise! Sorry, but even though it’s not unsocial hours you are suggesting playing, I think it’s really unreasonable to disturb others at any time.

25 minutes in the evening would be ok, it’s when it’s hours all day long they grinds me down. Would it be every day? Maybe drop a note into neighbours letting them know times and days so they know that will be be half an hour at best and are prepped to ignore the noise. You could invite them to join in as well.

Wouldn’t bother me at all. It’s only 30 mins.

This is the issue.

YABU. Wear headphones.

Nottherealslimshady · 09/11/2020 14:44

Get some cheap earphones. Imagine if everyone who shared the garden played their music, it would be a nightmare.

Calmandmeasured1 · 09/11/2020 14:52

Why take a chance on upsetting neighbours when you could wear headphones?

safariboot · 09/11/2020 14:56

I guess I'm in a minority in saying YANBU. It's your garden, you've every right to enjoy it, and music can be a part of that. Don't have it louder than you need - people indoors with windows closed certainly shouldn't be hearing it - and don't play stuff with explicit lyrics. If someone asks you to turn it down/off then do so.

safariboot It isn't her garden alone - it is shared with the other residents. I live in a cul-de-sac of flats with shared (large) front lawns - anyone playing music out there would very much annoy the other residents.
