To not understand the trend for 'hampers' as presents

Am I the only one who doesn't get, or go in for this trend?
My Facebook is full of people selling or making 'hampers' but I'm not talking about a wicker basket and luxury food, these are a plastic basket with a few things from the pound shop wrapped in cellophane.
I just don't get it. Most contain pound shop shampoo and soap. For me those are essential items and therefore not a great gift, unless they are lovely luxury or special versions that I would never justify buying for myself.
If you and your family like these I am not knocking you at all, taste is individual after all.
I'm just wondering, am I the odd one out here? Or anyone else like me and just doesn't get it?

I Love a voucher! You can choose your own present and not end up with something you don't need or want!

sqirrelfriends · 09/11/2020 13:53

@MysweetAudrina

I have one made up for my sd27. It contains

An oodie
Neom Xmas candle
Rose Prosecco
Lindt cracker
Vegan shampoo, conditioner, shower gel
Neom hand and body lotion
L'occitane cracker

Will add a book, tea and more food items.

That sounds lovely, sorry to say I'm using it for inspiration for one I'm putting together for MIL.

The Facebook ones are laughable. Think unwrapped tampons, a couple of pencils, some deodorant and a twix.

the80sweregreat · 09/11/2020 13:58

As I am now old the idea of a tampon wrapped or not would make me lol! 'Tena ladies' are welcome though.

Reborn2020 · 09/11/2020 14:06

I feel like I have missed out because I don't have anyone selling these hampers on my FB thread....

could you share some pictures of the ones you are talking about - minus any details that could reveal who is selling them?

Please? @Lockdownlumpy @AlexCabot @Darkestseasonofall

I've no idea what these look like Confused

MintyMabel · 09/11/2020 14:24

I don't get why people spend £15-20 on a cellophane wrapped plastic basket from fb when the items contain within cost no more than £8, and are usually fairly standard household items anyway.

No different to buying gift sets from Boots, or even that “luxury” hamper you are going on about. You pay way more than the value of the contents. Same thing, different price ranges.

I find “gift sets” from Boots and the like are often cheaper than buying the products individually.

I’ve just bought teen dd some really nice stuff from Molton Brown for Christmas, and it’s definitely cheaper to buy two it more products as a gift set than individually.

I wouldn’t buy one, but I certainly would gratefully receive one given to me. Times are hard for some, but I would hope that anyone who gives me a hamper has made it themselves (and not paid over the odds for it online). Would not say no to a boozy hamster stuffed to the gills with chocolate.

SpookyNoise · 09/11/2020 15:17

People must be buying them, because my FB is full of them.

hamsterchump · 09/11/2020 15:18

@sosotired1 Which section is the thread about deprivation in Cornwall in please? Is it in response to the BBC documentary last night? I'd be interested to read it, thanks.

I love a hamper.

When I was little the taxi firm my dad worked for gave every employee a christmas hamper, it was exciting because it contained things that to us were unusual and exotic. One year there was a jar of lemon curd, I remember it tasting amazing. Getting those each year was a huge treat for us.

I still love a hamper.

My partner made me one for my birthday last year, its in January but I think I still remember everything. It has aftershave, bath bombs, some of the skin stuff I use, really nice dark chocolates, a new rose gold nose ring, loads of lipbalms because I always lose mine, pokemon cards, then there were some jokey bits like a jar of garlic paste, rice jigsaw puzzle.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/11/2020 15:32

@Lockdownlumpy I think you are secretly marketing your products on mumsnet.

Crankley · 09/11/2020 15:39

Some of them are hideous. I have zero interest in receiving one of the home made ones but wouldn't say no to a Fortnum's hamper. Grin

dingdongdoo · 09/11/2020 17:09

@zoemum2006

I love hampers! I’ve always said “there’s nothing that doesn’t look better wrapped in cellophane”.

Yeah.. that’s pretty sad of me really...

Me.

I don't.

Promise.

Kissthepastrychef · 09/11/2020 17:19

Unlikely. Just cos lots of people are posting them doesn't mean they're selling.
One of the reasons they are full of tat is because people haven't got the money to invest in quality packaging and contents to make a sample version. So they just buy crap from Poundland so they haven't lost too much if they don't sell any

Proudboomer · 09/11/2020 17:22

My Facebook is filing up with wrapped cones for £2.50
Cheap hot chocolate, cheap oats and cheap mini marshmallows.
Contents about 50p and a bit of cellophane tied with ribbon.

I just don’t see the appeal but someone must be buying them

IrmaFayLear · 09/11/2020 18:07

My dog won a hamper in the dog training group raffle. He was thrilled. Who knew that Chappie was (to him) so tasty?! He loved everything in that hamper Smile

LolaSmiles · 09/11/2020 18:14

Hampers should be a case of knowing your recipient and some of these ones on Facebook seem to be far from that. They seem like the sort of thing that is given as an obligatory gift, which contributes to the mounds of unwanted gifts thay go into landfill or are passed on every year.

Before someone turns it into a class war thing, I don't think hampers have to cost the earth either. One of my friends did us a lovely one with some home made fudge, some flavoured gin someone in their village made, a cake, some chutneys etc. I probably would have cost less than a box of chocolates but was such a good gift for us and it was greatly appreciated.

WingingItSince1973 · 09/11/2020 18:56

My sis in law recently made its a hamper for our anniversary and it was absolutely fantastic. I've made them before for others. Saying that its so different to make your own personalised one than buy the poundshop versions on Facebook. Maybe good for kids who don't mind the sweets but I'd prefer to make my own as I know the person I'm sending to x
