Is there a new trend of saying "if that makes sense"....

when the statement in question CLEARLY does?

For example: "Usually Brownjes is on a Tuesday, except in the summer when it's on a Wednesday, if that makes sense?".

Or: "I like to cook our meals in the slow cooker, if that makes sense?".

What is this all about? Do people suddenly feel we are incapable of understanding a simple situation or statement?

@juneybean

Ohhh no I do this, it tends to be when I'm typing something so I worry it's open for interpretation

That would annoy me - you're putting the onus on the recipient to respond and affirm your comments.

Could you say "please let me know if this is not clear" instead - therefore removing the need for the recipient to take unnecessary action?

I’ve just read it three times on here and it’s the first time I’ve noticed it. Weird.

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 07/11/2020 22:00

It’s in fashion at the moment, I’ve noticed if for the last 2/3 years.

Also suddenly people were writing “haha” in messages instead of lol.

I’m sure there are many more

Justajot · 07/11/2020 22:00

I use it when I am suggesting a decision or course of action. I generally mean "do you agree with my reasoning?" or "do you have an alternative suggestion?"

Generally it's because I would rather lead with consent than by imposition.

MyGazeboisLeaking · 07/11/2020 22:01

@Statusless

The thing is some people mind and some don't. Asking someone to stop doing something harmless that doesn't bother them and some other people because it bothers you is quite arrogant, if that makes sense.

😂😂😂 actually, to me, your post DOESN'T make sense so you asking is fine!

Guilty Blush - forrin and verbose, I’m never sure if it does make sense. Grin

shrunkenhead · 07/11/2020 22:04

I've only ever really heard it used by mediums/psychics as a way of getting feedback from the people they're trying to con. It makes them seem more likeable/ human/endearing to their public and ensures they get some feedback to continue the nonsense.
Other than used as a confidence trick I've never seen this used in RL.

Statusless · 07/11/2020 22:04

Arggh! You see, one can never tell, if that makes sense.

Statusless · 07/11/2020 22:06

Actually that post was in response to someone else but I can see how it didn't make sense, sorry. Do you understand?

Statusless · 07/11/2020 22:09

Now I need to know what shows you've been watching Grin
MawnyStannit · 07/11/2020 22:10

Yes, people have been saying it all the time for a couple of years. YouTubers say it a lot, it’s very annoying.

BenoneBeauty · 07/11/2020 22:10

I say this (always have done!) when I'm not sure if I'm expressing myself clearly enough so genuinely want an answer (I'm 44!)

EatTheHamTina · 07/11/2020 22:10

Or 'hope this helps' no not really now piss off! Grin

shrunkenhead · 07/11/2020 22:13

@Statusless I used to watch nonsense like Crossing Over with Johnathan Edwards and that Psychic Sally and have seen a few psychic shows in RL. Mainly out of curiosity and scepticism and it becomes quite apparent how they work.

MushMonster · 07/11/2020 22:13

All your examples have more than 3 words, and apparently I can only grasp things in lots of 3. I "need" to be asked "if that makes sense"Grin

Lightbubbles · 07/11/2020 22:15

Maybe it's the new innit, know what I mean?

doctorhamster · 07/11/2020 22:17

@CodenameVillanelle

I have a colleague who constantly says it. It feels quite passive aggressive.
I think my dh might be your colleague. It really makes me cringe hearing him say it on work calls.
EverythingsComingUpRoses · 07/11/2020 22:17

My daughter does this

Or 'do you get what I mean?'

It's because she has autism and can't read peoples faces very easily to judge if she is expressing herself well

PicsInRed · 07/11/2020 22:21

It's the new way for women to soften their language so as to not commit the worst crime a woman can commit these days: forthrightness.

Statusless · 07/11/2020 22:22

@shrunkenhead Ah I see. Not too familiar with psychic shows, though I've come across some. I know of two Hollywood ones, a man and a woman - forgotten their names. Will look them up out of curiosity, thanks.

ReggaetonLente · 07/11/2020 22:24

Some of the Instagram influencers do it, Mrs Hinch being the main culprit. I assumed it was to drive up engagement as thousands of followers reply that yes indeed it makes perfect sense. And to cultivate a sort of sweet, lacking in confidence, friendly persona.

1Morewineplease · 07/11/2020 22:26

I've noticed this.
I'm annoyed at the number of people starting nearly every sentence with "so."

Eg on quiz shows...
" What do you do in your spare time?"
" So... I like dancing."

BlueJava · 07/11/2020 22:28

A guy at work says this all the time. I usually reply "Why wouldn't it make sense?" And he pauses everything. I've started doing a tally Smile

Cherrysoup · 07/11/2020 22:29

On a training course many years ago, the presenter ended most of his sentences with ‘Does that make sense?‘ and an earnest look. After approximately 20 minutes, I was ready to commit murder. We suffered him for the entire day. He was speaking in English, we were all English, of course we understood. I feel your pain, OP. My DH broke a friend’s habit of ending everything he ever said with ‘Do you know what I mean?’ by saying ‘Yes, I know what you mean’ fake sincerely. I think it”s just a filler, like um, er, etc.
