Strictly come dancing should do a non celeb version .....?

I think it would be brilliant.
Non celebs apply
BBC pay the non celeb wage for them whilst 12 weeks on the show and whilst they aren't working.
Or fit training around hours at work
I would love that!
Anyone else ?
It is just my fantasy as I would bloody love to dance ha ha

I haven't heard of most of the "celebs" so they might as well be Joe Public for me!

I always prefer ordinary people on quizzes etc than the celeb versions where they have to dumb down the questions.

notthepoint · 07/11/2020 19:43

I agree I think dancing on ice / I'm a celeb have better celebs than strictly this year

I'm sure there used to be a dance competition show like that.

Problem is as it gets more popular if gets more and more people who are semi famous anyway because they want exposure. But I agree. I like that style of show more.

MeredithGreysScalpel · 07/11/2020 19:43

They have done a non celeb version.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 07/11/2020 19:47

I always think they should do a non celeb version of Who Do You Think You Are? Watching David Olusoga’s A House Through Time, it’s obvious that ordinary people’s stories are amazingly interesting, and trying to trace your ancestry is expensive if you need to get records from other countries, something a lot of ‘normal’ people could never afford. I’d love to see that show.

x2boys · 07/11/2020 19:50

They did it was called come dancing .

EmilySpinach · 07/11/2020 19:51

They did, in 2015. It was called the People’s Strictly and was a Comic Relief fundraiser.

Elllicam · 07/11/2020 19:54

I would definitely prefer Who Do You Think You Are in a non celeb version too. I love family history but I get so annoyed by the luvvies emoting all over the place. I’d much prefer normal reactions. I think Strictly would be more interesting as a non celeb version too.

namechangenumber204 · 07/11/2020 19:55

Oh definitely OP - I would LOVE to do it - I have a couple of left feet but would love to partner Anton as he can't possibly have any expectation he will get beyond the first week Grin I get really frustrated with the celeb version of programmes - they already have charmed lives Hmm so why should they get even more fun Angry

Come dancing was the original ballroom and latin televised competition.

Ballroom and latin dancing is a massive world (which is quite scary at times). I have been to Blackpool when there were over 250 couples for one age category world championship.

Anyway. The reason it works with celebs is that people can follow one and become attached to them. It wouldnt happen with George 32 IT consultant from Peterborough and Mary 75 retired grandmother to 5 from Luton. People would not be as emotionally involved with it.

If you have eurosport sometimes they televise the european championships and they are joe public and where the professional dancers would have come from originally.

I still remember watching a demo by matthew and nicole Cutler. Fabulous dancers.

Bring back Come Dancing though. Loved watching that.

notthepoint · 07/11/2020 19:58

I would love to be partnered with Giovanni or Kevin (if he was still on the show)
Oh I can't remember come dancing.
I would have loved that

I'm in: when do we start? Come Dancing was for people who were already dancers.

Fizbosshoes · 07/11/2020 20:05

Come dancing was different though as it was already experienced dancers, not people learning....or "on a journey "

Fizbosshoes · 07/11/2020 20:07

I'd like a normal people/nobodies version.
I think you could get behind to someone previously unknown. Bake off for example has ordinary people on it.

MeredithGreysScalpel · 07/11/2020 20:08

Not Come Dancing - The Peoples Strictly as someone said above.

Horehound · 07/11/2020 20:09

Yes I've thought about this before too. If love to do it!

Reviewsplease · 07/11/2020 20:13

Also the thing with celebs is that the ones that generally do well are the ones that have some sort of dance training in their history. Whether it was doing panto for a term or training ballet. They also have a certain level of fitness even just from doing television work.

I love the idea and have always said it would be nice to see general public on the show. But joe public would need to give up at least 3 months solid training to get to a level where the rest of the public would want to watch it on tv.

When covid has done one if you like the idea of dancing find a local ballroom or latin class (there are hundreds) and give it a go. Its brilliant fun and if you feel confident there are medalist competitions which can be fun to do.

My boys are both dancers and last year DS1s dance school did a Strictly 999 charity event. Experienced dancers were partnered with a paramedic, nurse/doctor, police officer or fire fighter and they had 12 weeks of practice before a performance. The audience then voted for a winner. They raised thousands for a local hospice.

Something like that with the pros would be brilliant especially at thw moment with so much support for teachers, the NHS etc.

DenimDrift · 07/11/2020 20:17

it would be regular dance teachers (and they mostly detest strictly as its not real dancing, mostly embellished showmanship)

the contestants would need to be extremely dedicated and have lots of spare time too

i'm from the world of ballroom dancing and most schools are closed due to covid

Yes!!!

I'd love this !! I'm a teacher with zero rhythm but I'd love to be taught!!!

I'm sure all my local community would be behind me Grin

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/11/2020 20:33

They did a “people’s” version and it was awful. Thank Christ they haven’t done it again.

DryRoastPeanut · 07/11/2020 20:34

I don’t think I’d be very interested in watching Lucy from Manchester or Barry from Lincoln learning how to dance.

How many ‘ordinary’ people could put in the hours? It’s all day 6 days a week. I’m much happier watching Bake off or Sewing Bee. SCD is what it is, celebrities dancing and wearing glam outfits.

Reviewsplease · 07/11/2020 20:36

The thing with Bake off is that the bakers have some sort of baking background. They do it for fun or more at home. They go through a selection process and the ones with some baking talent are selected... I wouldnt get picked cause i can make a white loaf and half decent Victoria sponge

A services one for nhs/police/Fire I could see working.

@2gorgeousboys I have been involved with some charity dance shows like this Too. It's really rewarding to watch the non dancers during practice but they only do a one off evening and not weeks and weeks of show dances

notthepoint · 07/11/2020 20:37

I think people would be interested.
People got invested with X factor and they are all normal people hoping to be "pop" stars.

As a dancer, yup, absolutely. It’s not to take away from what the celebs do but the vast majority aren’t dancers even by the end, they just know how to perform a specific routine. If they went to, say, a ballroom social dance they wouldn’t be able to do it.
