To have shouted back?

I am really annoyed at myself.

I live in part of the country where retail is still open. I called into a shopping centre I haven’t been in in over a year and had a walk around marks and Spencer. Face mask on, queued, social distanced.

I then remembered I needed To go to the chemist so nipped out onto the mall.

Next thing a lady was shouting (yes angry shouting) at me that it was a one way system. I genuinely hadn’t noticed. I said I was sorry and that I hadn’t noticed, I stopped walking and looked around to see where I should be (it wasn’t busy so there wasn’t an obvious flow of people in one direction or the other).

She Then threw her arms up in the air and made an exaggerated point of shaking her head.

I shouted after her that I genuinely hadn’t noticed, had apologised and there was no need for her behaviour.

People stopped and stared. I am so annoyed at myself for rising to it. And annoyed that I missed the sign.

Is this what life is like now. People yelling in shopping centres (me included 😢).

Non issue. Move on, it’s an easy mistake to make.

StepAwayFromGoogle · 07/11/2020 17:32

Unfortunately that's exactly what we're reduced to. The COVID police are out on force. Nobody seems to be able to be polite any more.

Pickypolly · 07/11/2020 17:32

If have bloody shouted too, what a daft bag!
Not for one minute would I have put up with that.

MonClareDevole · 07/11/2020 17:34

YANBU but most people are worried now. We have to cut each other some slack - especially those who can’t seem to do that for others. We have no idea what they’re going through.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 07/11/2020 17:35

This happened to me just the other day, I was yelled at for missing the not very obvious sign. Politeness has completely disappeared.

Mummadeeze · 07/11/2020 17:36

I would have ignored her and the one way system if there was barely any people around. Just don’t let it get to you.

JamminDoughnuts · 07/11/2020 17:36

it is dystopian times we are living in

JamminDoughnuts · 07/11/2020 17:38

i bumped into a lady in the supermarket, i apologised but you should have seen the glare she gave me, And she was with her husband, they should nOT have been shopping in pairs! taking up extra space,
so unnecessary.

baubled · 07/11/2020 17:41

The shouting and waving of her arms would have pissed me right off, I would have shouted back too!

I heard someone say they were going to "knock my mum out" once in the Trafford Centre because it was busy and we all were trying to get past each other (pre covid) - I've never shouted so much in public in my life! If they can dish it they better be sure they can take it aswell.

Topseyt · 07/11/2020 17:41

You encountered the ridiculous Covid Police.

They are arseholes who are best ignored. They have nothing better to do.

I've been in town centres recently where there are apparently one way systems, but it isn't at all obvious which is the correct way to be going. Nobody polices it and even fewer people pay it the remotest bit of attention.

PatchworkElmer · 07/11/2020 17:44

We had something similar leaving the zoo the other day- we were leaving after only an hour in there as (ironically) it was too busy for me, and I felt anxious. Exit really badly signposted, and we ended up going out of the entrance by mistake- which was right next to it, and both opened out into the car park. There was nobody out there apart from 1 woman and her toddler on their way in- and loads and loads of space between them and us. She shouted “the exit is THAT WAY”. DH apologised to her and said it was an honest mistake. It would’ve been daft if us to re-enter the building once outside though, just to use the correct doorway. She shook her head at us.

First time I’ve been ‘Covid-shamed’ as I’m genuinely mega cautious.

LazyFace · 07/11/2020 17:45

Nah, you had a mask on. Nobody will recognise you later. :-)

Velvian · 07/11/2020 18:11

People are rude arseholes. I imagine she was the type that moans about the lack of manners these days.

JamminDoughnuts · 07/11/2020 18:12

we have forgotten to be kind

MarshaBradyo · 07/11/2020 18:14

Irritating for you

CanSomeoneElsePickMyName · 07/11/2020 18:21

Was it a member of staff or just a shopper?

Henrietty · 07/11/2020 18:30

This happened to me in b&q. We had a plumbing emergency so I rushed out to buy something while dh was trying to fix it. Its confusing because they’ve made a one way system, but the arrows were going in the opposite direction to where the people were going. I followed everyone else and a staff member saw me and immediately started flapping his arms about and sighing loudly about how people couldn’t read. It was the way he spoke to me that got to me. I genuinely hadn’t realised I was going the wrong way and was just following everyone else! There were only 2 other people in the shop as it was about 15 mins until closing time!

AnnieMaul · 07/11/2020 18:57

Don't be hard on yourself. When people go out of their way to try and "discipline" and embarrass others in spite of an apology it says far more about them than it does about you.

switswooo · 07/11/2020 19:05

YANBU, she is just being a busybody. You didn’t swear!

Mellonsprite · 07/11/2020 19:08

Someone pointedly muttered, gestured, rolled their eyes and gave me an angry look in a shopping centre last week. I had genuinely missed the tiny arrows on the floor indicating one way. Didn’t say anything back as I actually hadn’t realised, I hate ‘the new normal’.

MrsSpringfield · 07/11/2020 19:13

Ah don't worry! She was silly to continue after you'd apologised and moved. She deserved your reaction IMO.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 07/11/2020 19:19

She wasn't wrong to point it out but there was no need for her to be so huffy about it. Glad you socked it back to the miserable cow.

slashlover · 07/11/2020 19:22

It depends, we have MASSIVE signs, arrows on the floor/wall, aisles with barriers and people still "don't notice". We're trying to keep everyone safe but some people genuinely don't care and do what they want.

Ideasplease322 · 07/11/2020 19:24

@CanSomeoneElsePickMyName

Was it a member of staff or just a shopper?
Just a shopper. No members of staff around.

I am normally very compliant with the rules, and sensitive of others. I know it’s an anxious time.

She just made me see red, it was an over reaction. I was so cross with myself afterwards.

There were big signs at either end, but I had joined form a shop half way along (and had entered that shop from The outside) so I genuinely didn’t notice.

There was no deliberate rule breaking, and I was still 2m away From anyone else and I was wearing my mask. If she had said excuse me, just to let you know it’s one way here, I would have apologised and thanked her. She was ride and aggressive from the outset, and even when I apologise and explained I hadn’t realised she still went on theatrics.
