To take a regular extended lunch break

I'm really struggling to get my exercise fix atm. In winter I usually run with a club or go to the gym. No club or gym atm and whilst I ran on my own a lot in the summer lockdown, it doesn't appeal much in the dark.

I was thinking about if it's possible to run at lunch but only get 30mins. Realistically, to change, shower and get a decent run in I'd need 1hr20? The building is locked at 5:30 so I can't stay late to make the time up but I can wfh (arguably that's what I should be doing anyway but let's not go there now).

It would be unreasonable though, wouldn't it?

Clever, that you asked the question, and we all voted, and then , in a later post, said you were SLT in a school.

Of course you can't.
Office role elsewhere - makes a lot of sense (which is what I thought I was voting on, and I suspect most other people did too).
Obviously, in a school, you have to work when the dc are there.
Like a Dr or a Nurse has to work when the patients are there and a checkout operator works when the shop is open and a train driver works when the train timetable dictates.

Your prep / marking / admin / pointless paperwork you can do at whatever time you like.

Bitbusyattheminute · 07/11/2020 13:32

And if you're slt, aren't you busy trying to coordinate the covid driven multiple lunchtimes?

Or is that why the kids are running all over the school?

doodleygirl · 07/11/2020 13:35

This is my routine if it helps, I am working from home. Get up, 30 minute interval or hit run run, I have joined Peleton App and they have an outdoor section, you can therefore do the run with them. Lunchtime walk the dog for about half an hour. After work I do a strong class with my online gym for 45 minutes.

Works for me and I feel pretty fit.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/11/2020 13:37

I don’t think you’d think this was ok if it was a colleague regularly showing up 50 minutes late .

You say your break is half an hour, you want to treble it!

foxyroxyyy · 07/11/2020 13:43

Do it. Fuck work Wink

Beachhuts90 · 07/11/2020 13:46

I'm having trouble imagining SLT at my school doing this, because they are all busy from 11.30-2 helping out in the dining hall on lunch duty.

Perhaps you can join in on a PE class Wink

Inertia · 07/11/2020 13:51

If you are genuinely SLT in a school in current conditions, and your workload is so light that you can afford an hour and a half to disappear for a run every day, then either your role is superfluous (or part-time at best), or you are not supporting your colleagues well enough.

Given the position schools are in- many staff off sick and insufficient budget for adequate cover; teachers /TAs only getting a 20 minute break in an 8 hour day due to bubble requirements- it would show utter contempt for you to take a 90 minute break. If you’ve got all that extra time, pitch in and support those you manage, just like other head teachers and SLT across the country are doing.

Lockdownhairdontcare · 07/11/2020 13:54

You know yourself it’s not possible. Run Saturday and Sunday and home workout during the week.

LouiseTrees · 07/11/2020 13:55

Get a treadmill and run at home.

Kcar · 07/11/2020 13:59

I used to work with someone who did this. Her view was it was only 10 minutes and she would make the time up.

She didn’t. And it was more than 10 minutes. I complained and she was made to take the contracted lunch.

LolaSmiles · 07/11/2020 13:59

The job is a senior role in a school. I could make it work quite easily, but it wouldn't be an option for many others, including most of those I manage
If you're a senior member of staff in a school then you should be available in your non contact time.
It's not your personal running time.

Honestly, that sort of attitude is how some teachers think some SLTs don't have enough work to be doing.

SimonJT · 07/11/2020 14:13

If you don’t like running in the dark get to school earlier, run on school grounds and then shower. That way you’re not eating in to the time when you’re paid to work.

SansaSnark · 07/11/2020 14:15

@BecomeStronger

Not in daylight no.

The job is a senior role in a school. I could make it work quite easily, but it wouldn't be an option for many others, including most of those I manage.

In a more office based role, I'd think this was OK, but in a school you'd be massively resented. As a teacher, there are a lot of days where I get 20 minutes break if I am lucky.

It depends if you care about your colleagues resenting you or not.

StanfordPines · 07/11/2020 14:19

I go in the morning. Yes it’s dark but I get on with it. I’m lucky that I live in a quiet residential area and I stick to the roads.

And then I go to school for 8am and I’m lucky if I get time for a wee.

FrippEnos · 07/11/2020 14:20

I can't believe that anyone that works in a school would even think that this would be a reasonable thing to do.

nanbread · 07/11/2020 14:23

I would say YANBU if you worked from home and in the job you could do anytime, but in your role in afraid it would be a no.

Find a friend from the club to run with at night

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 07/11/2020 14:30

That would go down well in my school where we get a 20 minute lunch break then spend 30 minutes cleaning tables and benches with anti bac!

Chocolateandamaretto · 07/11/2020 14:31

Can’t you run to work? That’s how I fit a run in at the moment!

Chocolateandamaretto · 07/11/2020 14:33

I agree with the op who said SLT are all on duty over lunch. What exactly do you do I’m a school OP where you are literally having nothing to do with the kids during lunch???

LizB62A · 07/11/2020 14:40

The restrictions allow you to exercise with one other person, so why not find a running buddy from your running club?

Cheeseandlobster · 07/11/2020 14:41

I call reverse. No-one can be this entitled surely?

On the off chance it isnt, go ahead Op if you want to be universally resented and talked about by your colleagues. Do a 15 min Hiit session at lunchtime if you need to and go for a longer run at weekends. Or run in the dark which other people seem to manage perfectly well

rocketspin · 07/11/2020 14:41

I'd be furious if there was a pastoral or safeguarding issue with a child and a senior member of staff wasn't there if help was needed because they had taken an extended lunch. I'd have zero respect for them.

OverTheRainbow88 · 07/11/2020 14:44

I recon OP must be the ‘business manager’ or something ; no way is OP in a Teaching/pastoral role

Shakirasma · 07/11/2020 14:45

I think you would be totally taking the piss to do it.

Annebronte · 07/11/2020 14:51

If you work in a school, where most colleagues’ days are absolutely inflexible: no you mustn’t do that. The staff would all be really pissed off with you, and you would lose credibility. Run in the dark: it’s no big deal.
