Shop assistant coughing

I've just been to the local one shop stop to get milk (missing from our supermarket delivery). The shop assistant, wearing her mask on her chin, burst into a coughing fit half way through scanning. She turned away and drank some water then pulled her mask up before turning back and told me 'it's not Corona, people have been asking all day, I'm just full of a cold'. She looked really sweaty.

I'm so upset. I'm shielding a relative and haven't been to the local shop since February.

Aibu to think she shouldn't be at work if she's coughing all over the place to the point people have been asking her is if she has the virus all day? I have no idea if she's had a test, she might just be assuming it's a cold. We've been so careful. I want to phone the shop and ask if she's had a test, if not I still have chance to leave the house now before possibly getting sick and passing it on to the shielding relative. I also want to complain that they were wearing their masks on their chins. What's the point that isn't helping anything!

YABU she told you it isn’t covid and is probably sick of people asking and giving her filthy looks for coughing. She’s probably had a negative test and so returned to work.
It’s so funny because I remember before the pandemic there used to be threads of here of people being bashed for saying they’d take the day off work for having a cough/cold.

Fouroclockonamarblemorning · 06/11/2020 21:32

The whole continuous cough thing is so subjective. I had a scratchy throat, no cough, no temp, sense of taste and smell was fine, I just felt like I was coming down with something and tested positive. I’m in my fifth week of being very ill with covid. It’s absolutely awful. She doesn’t have been in work with cold symptoms.

Sweettea1 · 06/11/2020 21:34

Coughs and colds do still exist!! Why didn't you confirm with her if she had been for a test save yourself worrying when she said don't worry its no covid you reply have you been tested.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 06/11/2020 21:34

drama you are wrong. You may have caught COVID and your immune response to it is causing similar symptoms to what you've had before. You can't possibly know it isn't COVID. How arrogant.

ShowingOut · 06/11/2020 21:34

@cathcath2

Shop workers do have to wear masks unless they are exempt.
Not if there's a screen.
DramaLlama12 · 06/11/2020 21:35

I always have to lift the leg up as well because inevitably halfway through a coughing fit I'll piss myself a little , same every. single. time so when I say it's a cold , it's a cold
I also sound like a fog horn when my chest is really bad

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 06/11/2020 21:37

Well they aren't going to tell you if she's had a test are they? That's her private information. I doubt she would be allowed to be at work ill if she hadn't though, where I work you would be sent home.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 06/11/2020 21:37

So drama you're just going to ignore the posters above who have had COVID with similar symptoms to yours? Jesus, no wonder it's spreading like fucking wildfire again

NameChange84 · 06/11/2020 21:41

One of my students had her usual yearly “head cold” leading to tonsillitis starting under a week ago. No cough. Tickly throat, headache, phlegm. One of her housemates is immunocompromised and demanded she went for a test. Much eye rolling and “but I’m always ill at this time of year! It’s just the change in the weather!”.

Positive Covid test.

And within 5 days later she’s given it to everyone in the household except the immunocompromised girl who sensibly distanced herself from her as soon as her sore throat started. They all have different experiences of it ranging from asymptomatic, to cold like symptoms or typical cough and fever.

If you didn’t have a cough six weeks ago and you do now then it’s a new continuous cough, whether you get it annually or not. You should have got tested Drama.

Fittata · 06/11/2020 21:41

So selfish.

Also, if I had a cough/cold, got tested and had a negative result was serving the public who were worried about my cough, 100% I would tell them I had tested negative. There is no reason why anyone who has any semblance of social responsibility wouldn't do this.

NameChange84 · 06/11/2020 21:43

And to clarify, yes my student didn’t have the three main symptoms required by the government but we have our own on campus testing facilities so she didn’t need to have those symptoms to get tested.

NameChangeAgain2 · 06/11/2020 21:43

Well I rang up and actually got through to the women who served me and explained my situation. She was very nice on the phone and said she tested positive for covid over a month ago after starting back at uni and has been coughing ever since but has been advised she isn't contagious any more as covid is her only symptom and is fine to be back to work.

NameChangeAgain2 · 06/11/2020 21:46

Sorry I meant coughing is her only symptom.

I don't know whether to feel relieved or worse Confused

@DramaLlama12

I've been coughing for a month.. yes you are being VVVVVVV unreasonable, this cough is wet phlegm and I'm.full of cold , I get an annual cough and cold this time of year , a lot of years it goes straight to my chest and results in the coughing fits it brings ,, I'm now coughing and weeing a little and my throat is sore through all the coughing I cant help it It doesn't look as though it's going anywhere soon once it goes to my chest ,its been know to sit on my chest for up to 3 months I cant sit around on unpaid sick leave for the one month I've had it never mind potentially 3 months I feel like I have to keep explaining myself to everyone I cough near I know.mine isnt covid , perhaps she knows hers isn't covid, my DP wouldn't even go out for lunch with me the last couple weeks because its embarrassing and everyone looks at me We cant just all sit indoors and wait for the common cold to go before we enter society I'm getting sick.of people acting like I'm a disgusting peice of shit when it's only a cold Have some common sense and stop treating everyone that has a cold as potential covid carriers
I can’t believe you think that people with a cold aren’t potential covid carriers. For goodness sake go and get a test. The only symptom I had was a scratchy throat. No wonder people want to body swerve you if you’re coughing all over the place. You have no idea whether is a cold or covid. The fact that you get a cold every year doesn’t mean it can’t be covid. It’s highly irresponsible not to be tested.

I don’t understand why you think you can’t have caught Covid? The cold you’ve been getting other years, no doubt some of them were a coronavirus, so why couldn’t this be Covid?
DramaLlama12 · 06/11/2020 21:50

She told you this ? Isnt that against GDPR ? if my manager was discussing my medical history with a Stranger I'd be livid

BornOnThe4thJuly · 06/11/2020 21:51

@pollylocketpickedapocket

I’d be livid with someone with a new cough not isolating and getting a test.

It’s incredibly selfish.

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2020 21:54

And @DramaLlama12, you can choose to release any information about yourself you like. Gdpr is irrelevant.

???????

The OP spoke to the woman who served her, not the manager!!!

And you sound woefully ignorant. You should have got a bloody test. Thank God your DH is sensible and considerate. And what’s weeing yourself when you cough got to do with anything?

DramaLlama12 · 06/11/2020 21:56

Because I'm convinced I had it in march
Now THAT was something I'd liken to flu ,I've NEVER felt anything or experienced anything like that ever..I was literally bedridden .. I couldn't get tested in march , my husband works for the government and with the elderly and vulnerable and even he couldnt get tested
Now that I believe was covid
This , this is the cold I get every year , mucus everywhere on my chest , in my throat , up my nose , every cold symptom ..this is NOT what I experienced back in march , I had symptoms then that didnt go on the sympton list until.later on

NameChangeAgain2 · 06/11/2020 21:57

@DramaLlama12 yes she told me herself as I said. I was never at any point impolite to her or treated her like she was disgusting. I have the opportunity to protect someone I love if I have been exposed and find out right now, I'm just trying to do the right thing.

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2020 21:58

@ DramaLlama12 even if you had it in March, that doesn’t mean you don’t have it now.

You need a test.
You should isolate until you are confirmed negative.

Oh for goodness sake.

The latest research shows that antibodies don’t last so long as to give you immunity forever. You could have had it in March and caught a different strain now.

Or...seeing as you weren’t actually tested in March either...you might NOT have had it.

You aren’t psychic or magic. Just believing you have or don’t have something isn’t how it works. You’ve been selfish and ignored guidelines.
