To leave the washing up to drain?

Idontlikecheesecake · 06/11/2020 20:28

So last night me and DP ended in a heated debate about whether the washing up can be left on the draining board, or if it should be dried straight away.

He thinks leaving it to drain leaves water marks on them and these are dirty. He gave an example of finding water marks on cutlery in a restaurant and you’d complain they were dirty. I said that it’s different at home when it’s just us, to which he said there isn’t a ‘restaurant dirty’ and ‘home dirty’, it’s either dirty or it’s not.

I do dry up when we wash up together. But if I’m home on my own with my 3 year old, I sometimes wash up after lunch and leave it to drain. I hate drying (not allowed to wash up when DP is around because it makes my eczema worse), and the last thing I want to do is spend half an hour (exaggeration) at the end of the day drying up, so i do some half way through the day.

The particular event that caused this debate, was I’d come home from a 12 hour shift, and I was back in the next day for another 12 hour shift. So i came home, cooked myself something for lunch for the next day, washed up and went in the shower while it drained. He had already done most of the washing up, it was just my washing from cooking that was there. Then, when I was ready for bed, I quickly finished drying it and put it all away. He said this makes them dirty again because they get water marks on them. I said ‘is there anything wrong with trying to take off a few minutes from my jobs between shifts, so I can have an early night?’ He said yes! I get up at 4:45 when I’m working so try to go to bed early.

So please mners, give me your thoughts on whether I was BU or not?

Fir a start he's bringing fucking ridiculous when you're working those hours and with his reply his ears would still be ringing!! Twat.

Secondly it's more hygienic.

And WATER MARKS. ask him
If he thinks the water coming out if your tap is dirty? Idiot.

Ps Harvey water softener. Say good bye to limescale & water marks!!

mrsm43s · 06/11/2020 20:57

If you rinse all the soap suds of in very hot water, it dries quickly and mark free.

I hate people (DH) that leave washing up covered in soap suds and left permanently on the drainer and never bloody rinse or put anything away. Even worse if you only half wash up something like a grill tray, and then shove it on the drainer oozing dirty brown oily suds all over the place (DH again).

Fortunately we have a dishwasher, so most stuff gets washed properly and dried in the dishwasher, otherwise we'd probably end up divorced.

Deep breath. It was good to get that off my chest!

Echo .... fascinating studies all show that its cleaner if left to drain ... tea towels introduce too many germs..... So you have science on your side! As well as it being the easy option I prefer....

MrsTravers · 06/11/2020 21:02

Wash and rinse in very hot water and then leave to air dry. Have never had an issue with marks, in fact, I find it much better than our dishwasher (generally wash by hand when it's full and also for pans etc.)

Wash up gloves mean you can use really hot water and help with the hand eczema (have had it forever).

SlopesOff · 06/11/2020 21:03

Our crap (Bosch) dishwasher leaves stuff wet. I unload and leave it to dry. H waves a tea towel at it and puts it away or spreads it around the kitchen which is easier than looking to see where it belongs and has belonged for the last 8 years.Except if it is really wet like plastic, that is left on the draining board for me to deal with because it is only a woman that is clever enough to dry plastic.

TheTeenageYears · 06/11/2020 21:04

Tea towels are gross. Dishwasher or drip dry in this house. Rinse everything off properly and there shouldn't be water marks.

Fouroclockonamarblemorning · 06/11/2020 21:04

Rinse it before you put on draining board.

longtompot · 06/11/2020 21:05

He is being very unreasonable. Water marks are not dirt, they are water marks! Nothing wrong with leaving washing up to dry on the draining board. I do it all the time, unless I've decided to do a through clean and tidy of the kitchen and want everything put away. I do polish wine glasses with a glass tea towel. I love shiny wine glasses.

Turniplover2020 · 06/11/2020 21:06

I always air dry, sometimes I'll pour a boiled kettle over which speeds up drying, or seems to (and only if I'm making a cuppa after washing up). I really CBA to dry, and it's unhygienic. If DH feels differently I'd be letting him dry...

Voice0fReason · 06/11/2020 21:06

The only time I ever dry anything with a tea towel is if I need is straight away. Everything else gets left to dry. Far more hygienic.

Heyahun · 06/11/2020 21:07

Always dry and get the stuff put away

My kitchen and living room is open plan and I hate looking at the stuff drying would rather just finish the job tbh

Inthemuckheap · 06/11/2020 21:08

Tea towels are vile things. Much better and cleaner to leave it to drip (as long as you don't wash up in a very British washing up bowl which is equally disgusting).

seayork2020 · 06/11/2020 21:10

We always leave it to drain i dont like using teatowels to dry stuff except as a once off if we need it.

It gets put away sometime

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 06/11/2020 21:10

@Zixxy

Very important topic. There is a pandemic going on. FGS just do what you feel is right, and if OH objects, then tell him to dry the dishes EVERY TIME. Sorry for shouting.
You always seem very angry. Have you considered taking up meditation?

Speak on behalf of your own tea towels.

Mine are not vile!

Depends on your water! I always rinse in very hot water. Always water marks pre getting the water softener! None now, it's fab!!
Chickychickydodah · 06/11/2020 21:16

I leave mine to drain after tea and either put stuff away before bed or first thing in a morning.

AllWashedOut · 06/11/2020 21:18

You sound exhausted OP

Mum2jenny · 06/11/2020 21:19

If put on the draining board, I expect them to be dried and put away. Otherwise they need to go in the dishwasher.
If no dishwasher, all should be washed and dried without any delay. Drying cloths should be washed daily.

Oysterbabe · 06/11/2020 21:25

Obviously you rinse it and leave it to dry. I never dry up anything ever.

Nsky · 06/11/2020 21:33

Buy a dishwasher sorted

Idontlikecheesecake · 06/11/2020 21:39

McQuillam

I don’t mind the cooking, I’m trying to lose weight so trying to cook healthier foods and I’m being quite picky about what I eat. Just annoying that it felt like my opinion didn’t count. He’s not normally controlling at all.

Mmsnet101 - I might buy him a food hygeine course online! 🤣

And i said that when i wash up i have the water a lot hotter and dunk it so the suds run off a lot quicker but he doesn’t think that’s a thing

Have you got a tier dish rack that holds stuff vertical? In my experience you only get water marks if you just dump stuff straight on the draining board flat.
