My OH had a procedure in Turkey and would recommend it. He stayed in a beautiful hotel and had excellent treatment. I was very nervous about him going but he had a very positive experience. He felt a bit shit on the flight home, but that was all. Maybe I would advise paying for a slightly longer stay after the procedure before you have to travel.

Hi I’m going with Medaway next month for my rhinoplasty, I’ve found everything great so far. It’s my first surgery and first time travelling to Istanbul. Did you end up booking with them?

Blobby10 · 16/11/2020 12:35

Colleagues wife went to Lithuania for tummy tuck and liposuction. Said the care was excellent and the result is fantastic. Whole thing including flights, transfers to clinic and hotel and food cost around £2000 .

RedHelenB · 16/11/2020 12:36

With the COVID risk, more than ever I would not be having plastic surgery.

You can catch covid anywhere in the world , you have more chance of catching it in a supermarket doing your shop than going on a flight and having surgery in a Turkish hospital, which are actually far more strict and also very clean. I for one won’t let it stop me having surgery I have planned and wanted for years.

I thought that was a botched liposuction she had, in the UK?
xwizbit · 16/11/2020 14:10

I personally would avoid.
If anything goes wrong afterwards (Infections are very common with cosmetic surgery) where will you go for aftercare? Does the company have UK based clinics for this?
If UK cosmetic surgery is too expensive for you I would look at getting an interest free credit card/loan and pay more than the going rate in Turkey for decent aftercare.
Make sure the surgeon is a PLASTIC Surgeon NOT just a cosmetic surgeon, plastic surgeons have completed an additional 7 years.
Also, I know of a couple who went to Istanbul for a cosmetic procedure. Without going into detail a lot of bad things happened to them in the area of where they had their ops. It can be a VERY dangerous place.

Id stick with British surgeons registered under B.A.A.P.S

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/11/2020 14:46

There was literally a news story today about a woman who died and was resuscitated getting plastic surgery in Turkey, they didn't tell her and she didn't find out until she contracted sepsis and ended up in hospital in the UK and they found she had broken ribs.

I would never have surgery abroad.

CressidaTheHeathen · 16/11/2020 15:35

You get what you pay for, OP - in this case, likely to be a far lesser standard of care. A tummy tuck can actually be very dangerous surgery and there is no way in hell I would go abroad for something that causes major trauma to your body.

I say this as someone that thoroughly researched for months and went with a UK clinic and surgeon and ended up funding it with a loan because I couldn’t afford it either. Took me about 2 years to pay it off but it was worth it.

Just consider what if something goes wrong - will you fly back to turkey? Would you be prepared to sue someone in a foreign jurisdiction to get your money back and to pay for rectification here in the UK?

It really, really isn’t worth the risk. Get a free or low price consultation with a UK surgeon to discuss the risks and you’ll understand why going abroad is madness.

professionalnomad · 16/11/2020 17:24

As someone that has lived in Istanbul for 6 years I would say the opposite provided you do your research. The standard of medical care I have received here is excellent BUT I go to the best hospitals. Make sure you do your research and pick a reputable surgeon. The medical care here and the level of expertise is incredible. I've chosen to stay here to have my first baby because my doctor is is wonderful (severe hyperemesis and 3 weeks hospitalisation)

Allthatglitters2020 · 16/11/2020 17:43

Good to see some positive comments. I definitely agree you need to do your research, all these horror stories are clearly not reputable hospitals or surgeons. I personally have done so much research and I am confident in my surgeon. My hospital is “medicine hospital “, it looks amazing , so clean and looks like a hotel. People just assume you don’t get the level of care over there but I’ve spoke to many who say the exact opposite and that they would never get surgery in uk again after their experiences.

GreenlandTheMovie · 16/11/2020 17:50

I went to Turkey this time last year for liposuction and cannot fault it. Obviously, my whole body was swollen but I stayed a week and was able to go out walking after the op. So mostly what I remember about the whole experience is having an nice holiday and exploring Istanbul.

The care was excellent and they are doing a lot of these ops over there so have a high level of expertise. The follow up care was excellent but to be honest, what I mostly remember about the whole experience is having a really nice holiday and doing a lot of shopping so it can't have been very traumatic!

Pedallleur · 16/11/2020 18:22

Read the case from last week about the op that went wrong.

Cannotcope4223 · 16/11/2020 18:29

Would you mind sharing which surgeon you had and what practice you attended?

It's easy to give luxury and "great care" when everything goes well. The real issue is what happens if there's complications, either occurring abroad or arising after you're back in the UK. If it's not life-threatening the NHS usually won't treat complications from private cosmetic surgery, so sho's going to do any needed followup work and who's going to pay for it? Would you be asked to return to Turkey at your own expense?

Language can be an issue too unless you speak Turkish. The consultant surgeon probably speaks good English, the nurses might well not. I've been in a hospital where most staff didn't speak English and I didn't speak the local languages, it was a right nuisance.

You also need to consider insurance to cover costs such as prolonged treatment and repatriation in case anything goes wrong.

Hayeahnobut · 16/11/2020 18:49

I'd be very wary taking recommendations from a first time poster who is overly defensive about a clinic she's not even been to!

Have you got stats to back that up?

Being in a supermarket is very much lower risk than being on a flight with recycled air.

Also eating is a necessity. Tummy tuck isn't.

Blossomhill4 · 16/11/2020 18:53

Do you really need a tummy tuck OP? The dentist is enough to put me off any type of surgery!
