To ask if you are stiff when you get up from sitting/being imobile and why?

I'm almost 50. I'm active. I do a range of exercise from low to high impact.

I notice that when i get up in the morning or from sitting, I am stiff! My feet feel solid as do my legs.

It's fine after a minute.

Is this the onset of arthritis or from not doing enough yoga like movement to counteract the exercise?

Menopausal maybe. Take high strength vit d. It will help no end. Plus keep up the yoga.

PolarnOPirate · 06/11/2020 16:23

Yup me too but I’m 20 years younger than you 😫

Sundiamond · 06/11/2020 16:24

I'm post menopausal...had a slightly early one. I take shit loads of Vit D.

Yoga. yoga. yoga.

I'm sure most people feel stiff in the morning. I know when I practiced yoga every day I was always stiffer at early practices and I'm hypermobile too!

When you sit for a long time can you do some gentle sitting exercises when you're watching TV etc - even just ankle rolls?

Bluejewel · 06/11/2020 16:29

Me too - a couple of years younger than you and perimenopausal - I’ve been blaming it on my running

abstractzebra · 06/11/2020 16:32

I feel embarrassed about how stiff I am when I get up.
I do have Achilles tendinitis but generally I am stiff and for a few seconds I can hardly walk!
Not sure if it is normal or not or if I should be worried.
I would say I'm fit and active in general but quite plump which probably doesn't help.
I do worry about arthritis as my mother had it really bad but my doctor said there's things that can be done and it's not the life sentence it used to be.
I don't know if that is true and I'm not at a point I feel that I need treatment or investigation.

Chasingsquirrels · 06/11/2020 16:36

I'm late 40's and the same, except I'm not very active generally. I just put it down to age.

EggysMom · 06/11/2020 16:48

I'm 51 and definitely not an active person. Not menopausal (I wish!). The only time my legs get stiff are when they've been elevated on the recline part of the sofa for more than 20 minutes - if I curl my legs under me, or sit straight, then no stiffness.

Weirdly though this morning, I woke with one stiff arm. I have presumed that I slept funny, as this is most unusual. I have since been test-riding a new electric scooter and both arms are now aching like mad Grin

JayAlfredPrufrock · 06/11/2020 16:50

I’m 61 and can barely move when I stand up or get out of my car. Arthritis main culprit. Once I get going I’m ok.

PaperMonster · 06/11/2020 16:53

I’m like that but I do have musculoskeletal problems. Am fine being active but inactivity does me no good!!

StormBaby · 06/11/2020 16:55

That’s a dead giveaway for arthritis. Stiff after rest but can walk it off

dementedma · 06/11/2020 16:57

I have fibromyalgia and get very sore if I dont keep moving. Mind you I'm sore when I am moving too!

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 06/11/2020 17:00

I get this since turning 30 basically

Sundiamond · 06/11/2020 17:07

If it is arthritis, what can I do about it now to prevent it getting any worse?

OP posts:
pinkstripeycat · 06/11/2020 17:07

It’s age. I’m the same and very active, weight training, strength training, hill walking but get stuck for a bit if I sit too long or when i get up in the morning

Lara53 · 06/11/2020 17:07

I’m 47, under active thyroid for 15 years. I feel stiffness/ heaviness in legs/ feet in mornings/ after exercise or when not taking enough thyroid hormone. As someone else said a high quality Vit D supplement really will help.

TammyTwoSawnson · 06/11/2020 17:09

I used to be so stiff and sore, but then I found out I was deficient in Vit D and a few months after taking a high dose, the stiffness went away

MrsJunglelow · 06/11/2020 17:09

I’m not stiff in the mornings but boy am I stiff in the evening after a period of sitting!
I feel like a 90 year old after a period of sitting still!

Sundiamond · 06/11/2020 17:11

age sucks!

I take an excellent VIT D supplement and have done for years. I have osteopenia.

I hate all this stuff. I find it depressing.

I am 47, super active, very stiff after sitting for a period. I assumed just ageing !

ChristmasFluff · 06/11/2020 17:15

I'm 55, and have just started getting stiff again. I began at about 40, but it eased off when I got fit. Worsened again around 50, but went away when I focussed more on strength. Now the morning stiffness is back, but tbh it's because I find weightlifting pretty boring and have been doing HIIT more.

I have osteoarthritis but really don't suffer with it due to the exercise. Most people at 55 will have signs of arthritis on x-ray, but that doesn't need to mean pain, as pain happens due to inflammation. Muscles protect against joint inflammation, so the biggest thing you can do to protect your body (assuming you don't smoke - in which case giving up smoking will make the biggest difference) is be muscular - lift heavy and lift often. I'll get back to it when I've done a round of Insanity Max30

PP is absolutely right about thyroid too - but that stiffness and pain tends to last longer than just first thing in the morning.

Fuckityfucksake · 06/11/2020 17:17

Yip! have done for ages.
Mostly it's when I get up for 10 mins.
I'm 42, fairly fit. I have thyroiditis and asthma.
I'm not menopausal, don't have arthritis and high strength vit d don't help this and never have.
I do have a damaged spine and I'm on my feet a lot at work so just put it down to that.
It's a strange feeling.
My Dh (48) is stiff on a morning too. He has no illnesses or diseases.
It has to be age boo!

Cassimin · 06/11/2020 17:19

Im the same, I’m blaming menopause. Saw on another thread that vit d with k2 helps so I’ve ordered some.
My Nan lived well into her 90s and I don’t remember her slowly unfolding herself from the chair like I do.

movingonup20 · 06/11/2020 17:21

Me, same age, no yoga though. It's called getting old

Stripesnomore · 06/11/2020 17:21

I am pushing 50, don’t do yoga and don’t get stiff.

I do take vitamin D and wiggle my toes a lot when sitting or lying down.
