To throw away previous owners post?

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 06/11/2020 13:23

I haven't. But I want to. It's probably illegal, I will check in a minute.

Moved to this house a year ago, previous owners had 4 generations living here.
For the first 3-4 months I was sending tons and tons of post back with 'return to sender no longer at this address.

It worked for some, but others came again and again. I would write in massive capital letters and still they would keep sending. (What the hell is Whistl and why can't they read their returned post?!)
SO many catalogues (I didn't bother sending them back).

Eventually the previous owner got in touch because her scan date came through the post. Her husband still hasn't changed his address at the doctors because we all got a letter about our doctors changing and he had a letter that looked identical on the outside so if I'm right then he STILL hasn't changed it.

I've returned their post to them 7-8 times.

I made a point of saying "let me know who the companies are and I will call them myself and tell them you have moved."

But even that passive aggressive stance didn't work (I've asked nicely, but now it's just annoying)

And STILL it keeps coming.
I've had post yesterday and today for them.

I want to throw it away.

What else can I do?!

I throw away anything unimportant. I was throwing away their HMRC letters about their companies - I passed them on for an entire year we have now been here 2.5 years and still get them....even their own accountant wrote to them here...who doesn't update their address with their accountant?

I did return to the hospital a letter about their child...because its not the kids fault.

But really.....who doesn't either redirect their mail for a year and sort out all the important bits.

nettytree · 06/11/2020 13:29

We are in the same boat. 1st 6 months they redirected there mail. After that they popped round when we let them know they had about 10 letters. Since lockdown they have ignored all texts we have sent. Have a bag full, even 2 amazon parcels.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 06/11/2020 13:30

We have the same issue. We’re in our 4th year in our house and we still get their post. We always send it back to sender or just throw the adverts away. It’s decreasing finally but still happens.

My concern was that there would be bills unpaid or something and I never wanted bailiffs turning up so we always return it even though it’s annoying.

growinggreyer · 06/11/2020 13:31

Whistl is unsolicited mail from Very. I get it every so often even though I have never looked at their website and have no interest. Bin it all, if it is important the company will trace them through other means.

farandfew · 06/11/2020 13:31

I've been in my house 6 years and still getting some. I RTS it all (unless it's catalogues etc) but no rush - only when I'm going to a post box anyway. So it will build up sometimes. I have no contact details for them so I couldn't let them know or get them to collect it.

Janaih · 06/11/2020 13:33

Its polite and sensible to get your mail redirected for at least 3 months when moving.

After a year I wouldn't think twice about binning it. Well I might open it if it looked interesting.

Fluffybutter · 06/11/2020 13:33

I just write “not at this address” and put it in the post box

IsThisNameTaken · 06/11/2020 13:34

We still get the odd bit of post for previous owners after 19 years! And British Gas keep phoning (asking for previous owners) to try and book a service for the boiler that they apparently still have service plan for.

Chemenger · 06/11/2020 13:34

@Fluffybutter

I just write “not at this address” and put it in the post box
This is more likely to make the post stop than just throwing it away.
LongPauseNoAnswer · 06/11/2020 13:34

We put all of it in the recycling bin after months of sending it on. At one stage they had a courier collect a huge package full of their post.

Their US Election postal ballots were even delivered here Confused He's American so they still get loads of post from the US government departments sent to them at this address. How can they not update that?!

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 06/11/2020 13:35

My goodness. I hadn't thought of that! Hmm

We were still getting bank letters after 15 years. First year we returned all as "no longer at this address" after that we binned them apart from one which was from a bailiff which I opened and rang them I didn't want any bailiffs turning up. Whistl is a debt collecting agency so no wonder they haven't changed their address. You might want to check your address with credit agencies, if that's possible.

PanamaPattie · 06/11/2020 13:35

Shred the lot.

LittleMissLockdown · 06/11/2020 13:36

Absolutely throw it away. We still gwt post for the old occupants nearly 4 years later, anything important gets returned to sender everything else goes in the bin.

who doesn't update their address with their accountant?

For the first 2 years we had chocolates for their child at easter from auntie Donna and an anniversary card at the start of each May which was addressed 'to my dear little sis and her husband' on the envelope. Who the fuck doesn't update their own siblings about a house move!!

*ps we unashamedly ate the chocolate!

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 06/11/2020 13:38

@Chemenger did you read my first post?

OP posts:
FairfaxAikman · 06/11/2020 13:38

We've been on our house three years now. The post is annoying enough but we keep getting parcels - so newly ordered stuff.

DuzzyFuck · 06/11/2020 13:39

When I bought my flat the previous owner left me 2 bottles of wine and his onward address. For 6 months or so I diligently sent his post on (at my own expense, I'd bundle up a months worth and pop it in one big envelope).

After 7 months when his post was still coming thick and fast and from the same companies so clear he hadn't changed his address I stopped bothering. Every so often I'd take it to work and drop it all in the shredding bin in case there was anything sensitive in there. Approaching 2 years now and finally it's started drying up.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 06/11/2020 13:40

Fuck.
Now you have said debt collectors, I've just opened the recent two and they are BOTH debts!

I'm SO fucking angry now!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 06/11/2020 13:41

Whistl is a postal service so it’s not from them but another company. If there’s not a return address there’s nothing you can do but throw it away.

Gemma2019 · 06/11/2020 13:41

Have they moved far? I bet they have intentionally not changed their address with the doctor as they don't want to move surgeries. That's what the last people here did.

With a few companies I sent emails saying the previous occupants weren't living here anymore and that worked better than doing return to sender, but it's still a faff.

Gemma2019 · 06/11/2020 13:42

Ah yeah debts too. Some people!

Calmandmeasured1 · 06/11/2020 13:42

Why would you throw it away? Just write "Not known at this address" and put it in a postbox per Royal Mail's instructions.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/11/2020 13:45

No, Whistl is a mailing company that send mail on behalf any kind of company - could bank statements-debt collectors-bills- or indeed, catalogues. I’ve had this issue before and putting it back in the post with ‘No longer at this address’ gets most of it sorted out quite quickly.

Letsbepositive · 06/11/2020 13:46

Had a letter for the previous owners ( from 17 years ago) stating as I had returned post back to the company, could I send the solicitors details of who dealt with the house sale so they could track down the previous owner.......yes of course.....

Now I am not so accommodating, I just bung everything back in the post box with my address blacked out, have not had any post for them for quite a while now.

LittleMissLockdown · 06/11/2020 13:46

Why would you throw it away? Just write "Not known at this address" and put it in a postbox per Royal Mail's instructions.

Perhaps because the Op has done that already and found like many of us that it honestly does fuck all in limiting the mail from some companies.
