Mom Jeans and Apple Bellies

Lalaloveyou2020 · 06/11/2020 11:29

I know they're "in" but I just can't seem to find a pair that suits my apple pouch. Has anyone had any luck with Mom jeans?

OP posts:
37weekswithno2 · 06/11/2020 11:31

I'm apple shaped and mid rise jeans suit me best.
Don't wear something that doesn't suit you just because it's in fashion

TroublesomeTownHouse · 06/11/2020 11:37

I cannot wear mom jeans because my apple belly means I'm just the wrong shape.

I can manage a straight wideish leg with a more fitted top so that might be worth a try?

Otherwise skinnies it is however unfashionable that makes me.

paastumho · 06/11/2020 11:50

you need a completely flat stomach to wear mum jeans. they don't look good otherwise

MaskingForIt · 06/11/2020 12:15

Why not wear what you like and look good in, rather than what is “in”.

It’ll reduce fashion waste when they’re “out” and it also means you have independent thought and know your own mind, rather than doing something because everyone else does.

ILikeYouToo · 06/11/2020 12:18

Total apple here and high waisted skinnies is all I can do jeans wise. Everything else just accentuates the tummy - and is hard to wear a baggy enough top with.

whoareyouIwonder · 06/11/2020 12:19

Apple here and like PP high waisted skinnies are the only things I wear!

TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha · 06/11/2020 12:23

My Dd has got some and they look really nice on her! Being young with a flat stomach etc.

I don’t know why they call them Mom jeans as they aren’t going to suit all that many Mums, and most Mums I know don’t wear them! I would call them 80s style jeans - or maybe Charlene jeans as Kylie always wore them on neighbours - but what do I know?

TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha · 06/11/2020 12:24

I don’t know what shape I would be called - former hourglass (broad shoulders and hips, did have a slim waist when younger) who now has a big belly!

D4rwin · 06/11/2020 12:26

They look great on my daughter. Me, not so much!

Shmithecat2 · 06/11/2020 12:28

They look horrific on anyone over the age of 18 and over a size 8.

yelyah22 · 06/11/2020 12:30

No, you don't. You can wear what you like, and if you think it looks good (not a random MN poster), enjoy!

Bored of people assuming that 'visible outline of body' would ruin FaShIoN... if a poster doesn't feel comfortable wearing mum jeans, it's because people saying things like this have made her feel that she needs to 'suit' the prevailing look in a particular cut of jeans, not that - gasp - all clothes can look great on all bodies, if you just open your mind as to what you consider great beyond 'thin'.

(I don't wear mom jeans because they ride up my MASSIVE ARSE and then they give me thrush Grin but I can highly recommend M&S Straight Leg High Waist jeans)

goteam · 06/11/2020 12:31

Agree with others, wear the jeans style that suit your shape. My waist isn't what it used to be so also find skinnies give me the best shape. I tried on some "mom" jeans last month and they looked awful on me. The "boyfriend" style might suit you.

SmudgeButt · 06/11/2020 12:38

I would run away from anything promoted as "mom jeans". it sounds belittling somehow. Like "this is something for someone who may have once been slim and good looking but now is a fat slob".

M&S jeans are universally garbage IMHO. Horrid fabric, bad fit, cut so small that I normally have to go up about 3 sizes to have any chance of getting them on.

Ginkypig · 06/11/2020 12:56

I always thought they were called that because they were the shape that was popular in the 80’s like @TheDowagerDuchessofMwwwahaha said so a lot of now mums probably wore them then rather than mums wear them now.

So more I’m wearing my moms jeans she used to wear back when she was my age and not im a mum so these are aimed at me.

I don’t actually care that much to be honest I didn’t like the shape then and I don’t now so I’ve no idea why I’m posting Blush

peaceanddove · 06/11/2020 13:07

I am a classic Apple, with big belly but flat bum, small hips and good legs. I have spent £££££££s finding the most flattering cut jeans. My Holy Grail of jeans turned out to be Gap Best Girlfriend jeans. They're mid-rise, because anything high rise just cuts into my (non-existant) waist. They hug my flat bum and are fitted enough to show my (still) good legs but aren't quite skinny.

I always thought of it as a slightly tongue in cheek name. As in, something a millennial’s mum would have worn in the 80s/90s.

So yeah faintly belittling but in the loving way that families poke fun an each other.

Notcontent · 06/11/2020 13:19

Mom jeans look best on tall and slim teenagers sadly! I am slim but short, so wore some over the summer with T-shirts tucked in, but with anything more bulky on top they look a bit frumpy on me. I am still wearing skinnies in winter...

LittleGwyneth · 06/11/2020 13:20

Some of the advice on this thread is very 2002...

You can wear whatever you like. Just because it shows the outline of your stomach doesn't mean that you shouldn't wear it.

I'm a size 14 and I look fucking great in mine. If I'm feeling a little heavier or self conscious then I wear them with a jumper which hits me at the top of my thighs.

The New Look waist enhancing ones are fab.

InTheFamilyTree · 06/11/2020 13:25

Yeah second the New Look jeans, can't remember the name but they are high wasted, very flattering on the bum too

Legallyblondeee · 06/11/2020 13:30

What a crock of 💩. I’m 30 years old a size 14 and I can assure you I look sexy as hell in my mom jeans.
goteam · 06/11/2020 13:30

But @LittleGwyneth isn't throwing a jumper over body parts you want to disguise or feel self conscious about the same as the dressing for your shape approach the rest of us are talking about? Why do that otherwise?

RattleOfBars · 06/11/2020 13:34

Wear a style you feel comfortable and confident in.

I don’t think jeans suit many body shapes tbh, unless you’re very slim and toned or find a perfect cut. I’m pair shaped so if they fit on the hips they gape at the waist.

I prefer jeggings, leggings or well cut trousers!

LittleGwyneth · 06/11/2020 13:35

@goteam

I don't think so. It's wearing an item of clothing you think is nice in a way that works for you. Most of the time I wear mom jeans with a t-shirt tucked in and I feel great about it. Occasionally if I've had a big meal and I feel bloated I like to wear them with a big jumper. I don't think that's the same as condemning myself to a life of flattering jersey wrap dresses because they're what make me look smallest on the basis of a optical illusion.

I’m also slim, short and not a teenager 😂 I recommend a tucked in plaid shirt now it’s colder and I felt amazing going out for dinner in a sheer tucked in blouse and mom jeans the other week.

I've got a couple of pairs of their Sienna straight leg jeans and for £19.50, they are the dogs bollocks. I have to size down rather than up though.
