Kids in supermarkets. I presume okay?

Didn’t take my two shopping during the last lockdown as heard things about children being discouraged. I’m fb friends with a lady works in a local supermarket and all she did was moan about kids being in there which put me off taking them.

I try and avoid taking my kids shopping even before covid anyway 🤣 they just want to buy everything!

But today... my heating system had gone wrong. Likely won’t be fixed until next week at the earliest if they can solve the problem (we have hot water thankfully)

I’m absolutely freezing. Thinking of going to Asda or Sainsburys later to buy a nice fleecy throw, thick pyjamas, hopefully a jumper, thick socks, hot water bottles, slippers for all of us. We haven’t got a lot of extra warm things in the house for all of us.

Will look like an non essential shop to most people but I’m so cold 🥶🥶

Hubby is going to work shortly until tonight. Kids finish school early today so I presume I can just take them even if we are in lockdown 2? Haven’t got time to go before they get home (on Fridays they finish after lunch)

So yeah fine to take them?! I would order stuff but I’m already freezing 🥶🥶

Just take them it'll be fine. Single parents have to take the kids with them.

NoTeaForMe · 06/11/2020 10:55

As far as I’m aware the “non-essential” bits in supermarkets are closed off. So you won’t be able to buy clothes or a blanket. Sorry!

This is not true. I bought Christmas wrapping paper. Grin

OP, take your children go and get some warm clothes. Flowers

cupofdecaf · 06/11/2020 11:00

How is keeping young children warm and healthy not essential? Go for it.

user1493413286 · 06/11/2020 11:02

I know they’re encouraging people to shop alone but if you don’t have any other option then there’s little choice. I’m not sure if those types of things have been closed off as non essential though

Lowkeevslucille · 06/11/2020 11:03

You should only take them if you have no other option. Ideally you should go shopping whilst they are at school but if you are busy working or unable, then yes, take them with you.

The alternative is to leave children far too young either outside the shop or alone at home, neither an acceptable solution.

j101112 · 06/11/2020 11:03

I’ve not heard of any shops blocking off the non essential things locally here but time will tell. I may have to order online if that’s the case!

OP posts:
Ewanispurple · 06/11/2020 11:06

Go for it, take them!
I did my weekly food shop yesterday but also bought some non essential items (clothes etc.) nobody questioned it and nothing was blocked off!

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/11/2020 11:09

Just take them.

If the range and Robert dayas is open then your kids can't be considered a problem!
If you are in England apparently we aren't following wales lead thank god and if a shop is open you can buy whats in it. Like you should be able to

3rdNamechange · 06/11/2020 11:10

Can you buy a couple of electric heaters as well ? It's horrible with no heating. Do the heating people know you've got small children ? Can you try anyone else ?

j101112 · 06/11/2020 11:10

Thank you. Tbf I try and avoid taking my two shopping covid or not. They just want to buy everything 🤣 I’m getting a food shop delivered later too!! Really don’t want to go out but I just want to keep us warm. Normally we’d be out and about all weekend but now due to lockdown it’ll be staying home! Does anyone know if wilko is open? Thinking of going there instead where I can get large throws, hot water bottles and maybe order the slippers etc instead?

OP posts:
j101112 · 06/11/2020 11:12

We have a heating engineer coming shortly just to look. It won’t be fixed for the weekend. It’s our own home. No landlord, housing association etc to deal with but expensive times £££

No aisles closed off here either, Tesco just the same as normal with fully stocked shelves. I have bought christmas decs and wrapping this morning.
But, op, surely it would be sensible to buy an electric heater as well? A convector heater, for example, pumps out plenty of heat, and if you heat one room (probably your sitting room) and keep the doors closed, at least you will be okay in there. They are about £25. The larger supermarkets will sell them, failing that, try a DIY superstore or order online.

CorianderBlues · 06/11/2020 11:13

Take them, but sit them in the trolley seats, don't let them run about and grab things.

Please stop with the false information. Unless you have the misfortune to be in living under the yoke of the Power mad despot ruler in wales, you can buy anything you like from the supermarket or any other shop allowed to remain open.

You can also shop with anyone from your own household unless the store in question has their own door policy which limits this. None I’m aware of will stop a single adult and children from entering.

Noitjustwontdo · 06/11/2020 11:14

I’d personally order things like that on Amazon prime plus a couple of electric heaters.

MoiraNotRuby · 06/11/2020 11:16

I hope you get heating soon, I'm sure its fine to take DC in shops. Just to add, try asking around local groups to see if anyone can lend you a plug in heater for now.

Its the sort of thing my neighbours group would happily lend each other, saves buying one when you don't need it long term.

MyCatReallyIsAGit · 06/11/2020 11:19

Wilko is open where I live. Definitely get a little fan heater as well!

You could also do click and collect in Argos for anything you can’t find (and that includes the Tu range from Sainsbury’s).

Newnamenewopenme · 06/11/2020 11:25

Can you get electric blankets for bed times?

This just isn't true. The government made it clear that if a shop is permitted to open then it won't have restrictions on what it can sell.

Go for it OP. You need those things so they are essential. Don't worry about what people think.

Himalayansalt · 06/11/2020 11:56

Also, ask local friends/neighbours if they have any fan heaters or portable radiators you can borrow. I find people are always very happy to help at times like this because we can all sympathise with having no heating!

LindaEllen · 06/11/2020 11:56

You should go alone where possible, but if you need to do the shopping and the only option is to have the kids with you, it's fine. Just make sure they're either in a trolley seat or know that they have to keep hold of the trolley and not run round - people not sticking to the rules (even children who know no better) make people super nervous at the moment!

BeeDavis · 06/11/2020 12:03

As long as you’re not letting them run riot around the place you should have no issues! Can’t tell you how many kids have run into me in the supermarkets because their parents don’t give a shit about what they’re doing!!

makingmiracles · 06/11/2020 12:03

@j101112 don’t know if you have a Lidl near you, but i went yesterday to get a few things and bought the softest loveliest big faux fur blankets, they didn’t have much choice in colours we got black and navy but they’re so soft and warm and the kids took them to bed last night, great size at 150cmx200cm and they were £10

j101112 · 06/11/2020 12:04

Thanks all. I will see how things turn out later. May just order. They are pretty well behaved in shops. They just want to buy everything in sight 🤣

I actually didn’t think of electric heaters. We may even have one in the attic but it will be so old now...
