Relationship Over - Engagement ring

shitinmyhandsandclap · 04/11/2020 17:05

Recently split with my partner of 15 years, I asked if he wanted the engagement ring back, he doesn't so I've decided to sell it

Anyone done this and can give me some tips or an idea of what I could hope to sell it for - it cost £2k, white gold band with diamonds

Unfortunately much less than you paid for it

AlternativePerspective · 04/11/2020 17:07

Probably about £150 if you’re lucky.

Bells3032 · 04/11/2020 17:08

Unfortunately the resale value of diamonds is so redic low. You may get a couple of hundred for it max.

You could consider making it into another piece of jewellery or if you have kids keep it for them

LilacPebbles · 04/11/2020 17:09

I was told mine was basically worthless so keep it to just enjoy the diamonds. It's in a drawer somewhere

KarmaStar · 04/11/2020 17:10

Unless you need some money now it's probably best to wait a while op.

GingerBreadNurse · 04/11/2020 17:11

Where did you get it from? I think engagement rings are vastly inflated to buy brand new, particularly if it’s a high street jewellers. Do you know about the diamonds? Carat, cut, clarity etc.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 04/11/2020 17:13

It would be sold for scrap/diamonds so wouldn't be worth much at all unfortunately. eBay may be worth trying if you set a price and leave it on there for a while. Items with a designer name tend to keep a much higher value. If it was from a high street jeweller then it won't be worth anywhere near what was paid.

DaenarysStormborn · 04/11/2020 17:14

Take it to an independent shop for a valuation/ guideline for price. They will shut under lockdown so ring them.

Zolaanna · 04/11/2020 17:16

Do you have the paperwork? Ie proof of it being an authorised diamond, with info on clarity, weight, classification?
If not this will make it a lot harder to sell - but not impossible.

It is rubbish to say it is worthless! if it is authentic diamonds and platinum then of course you can sell it!
I am also not sure where people are plucking these numbers out of the sky. Really strange.

If it is worth 2k at sale it depends on hold it is, are there any scratches? does it come in the original box etc?

shitinmyhandsandclap · 04/11/2020 17:17

Oh I know it won't be anywhere near what was paid, it's not something I want to get made into another piece and I don't have kids. I don't actually need the money but just don't want the ring anymore lol.

It was from Ernest Jones, 1.2 carat, diamond radiant cut - I'd be happy with a couple of hundred but no idea where to start

I put mine in the bin Grin

AdoraBell · 04/11/2020 17:20

Second hand engagement rings are based on the gold value. In your position I would get the stone/stones reset and maybe change the ring, or sell it for the scrap value of the gold.

WaltzForDebbie · 04/11/2020 17:21

Do any local jewellers sell second hand jewellery? We have a nice one near us that does. Some will sell it on your behalf and take a cut. Probably worth ringing round jewellers after the lockdown to find out your best option.

OneofPansPeople · 04/11/2020 17:23

Is be reluctant to sell it for such a small amount.
Could you persuade yourself that it's not an engagement ring and wear it on a different hand/finger as just a nice ring, or would that not work for you?

OneofPansPeople · 04/11/2020 17:24

If not I'll buy it Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/11/2020 17:24

I’d keep it & wear it on my right hand.

Is it one stone? If so, 1.2ct is decent, if it's a good quality stone you could maybe get a grand or more on eBay but I'd recommend you wait for a £1 selling fee offer other wise you'll pay 10% on top of PayPal fees.

I'd say eBay is your best bet, a jeweller will give you a fraction cos they want to make a profit too.

Don’t understand all these posters wanting to keep the ring and wear it (even if on another hand) once the engagement is over Confused

Why do you want such a sparkly reminder of heartbreak??

BlueThistles · 04/11/2020 17:28

It's not always heartbreaking when you call off an engagement.

movingonup20 · 04/11/2020 17:30

You could try eBay or similar, also worth speaking to jewellery resellers eg pawn shops. Might be worth waiting until mid January to get the Valentines market

JillofTrades · 04/11/2020 17:32

Sorry about the engagement op Flowers. 15 years is a long time. Hope you are doing ok?

workhomesleeprepeat · 04/11/2020 17:33

@SidneyCasing really? Break ups are normally at least a tiny bit painful...

I suppose there must be people out there who shake hands and amicably part ways, but I don’t think that’s the norm.

Daisyroselondon · 04/11/2020 17:33

I’d be interested in buying it! Do you have a pic?
