Relationship Over - Engagement ring

shitinmyhandsandclap · 04/11/2020 17:05

Recently split with my partner of 15 years, I asked if he wanted the engagement ring back, he doesn't so I've decided to sell it

Anyone done this and can give me some tips or an idea of what I could hope to sell it for - it cost £2k, white gold band with diamonds

My wedding, engagement and eternity rings cost over £4k and were insured for more. Sold them all as a set for £125.

AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/11/2020 18:01

Risky selling on EBay something of such value.

Nonsense!

fairydustandpixies · 04/11/2020 18:02

Diamonds and rubies, sold to a jeweller as that was the best offer I got, btw.

MissSmiley · 04/11/2020 18:02

I traded mine on for something else at an independent jeweller, added a bit to it and got a much nicer ring, was 15 years ago though

Fridgeandkitchen · 04/11/2020 18:03

I have a ring that was insured for £5k. The max I was offered for it in the jewellery district in London (the name escapes me) was £275. P

Try an auction house. We are selling some of late relatives jewellery, including a number of diamond rings. We had receipts for them (bought in the 1990s) and I'm surprised that the estimated valuation isn't far off that.

The one we're using take 18% commission and all auctions are online now.

orangenasturtium · 04/11/2020 18:08

@Housecar

Why do they depreciate in value so quickly? If it’s a quality diamond why wouldn’t it hold its value?
It's because the value of the constituent parts (the gold and diamond) is much less than the retail price of the ring. Most people don't want secondhand jewellery unless is it is an unusual style that can't be bought new, designer or antique, there isn't a huge market for it, often it will end up being melted down and the stones reused so the ring is only worth the value of what it's made of.
GeorgeTheFirst · 04/11/2020 18:08

As everyone has said, you'll get next to nothing. Would you consider having it reset as a pendant, presumably it is large enough?

LaurieFairyCake · 04/11/2020 18:08

EBay is one of the best places to sell if you have the receipt and a certificated diamond

I was offered £150 for a beautiful certified diamond in multiple jewellers/pawn shops during last recession - just over a carat, vvs1, D colour - so almost perfect

AliasGrape · 04/11/2020 18:09

I remember mine cost over £1k 13 years ago, I sold it for £75.

I went on a trip alone shortly after the break up, somewhere with a famous lake - I really wish I’d just taken the ring and chucked it in the water, simply for the symbolic value. My mum wouldn’t let me though Grin

I was really surprised how much the mark up is and how quickly they depreciate. This time round I’ve done the same thing though but am under no illusions that my wedding/ engagement rings will hold their value, this ones a keeper anyway but I also have dd now to pass on to if the unthinkable happened.

I’m sorry about your breakup OP, hope you’re doing okay.

ForeverRedSkinhead · 04/11/2020 18:11

I recently sold my engagement ring for £50 , it was white gold with a princess cut sapphire. My husband paid £350 for it.

I was happy to take £50 tbh , as my reason for selling was to buy something smaller and more wearable. It had been sitting in my drawer for years because the last time I wore it I got it caught on my pockets constantly.

I sold it to h and t , they were very professional.

switswooo · 04/11/2020 18:12

It was from Ernest Jones, 1.2 carat, diamond radiant cut - I'd be happy with a couple of hundred but no idea where to start

Is that solitaire sorry? Crazy to sell a 1.2ct solitaire for a couple hundred quid!

I’d be looking at a way to reset the ring to make it look less engagementy, although probably very hard and pricey.

AlwaysLatte · 04/11/2020 18:14

I threw my first one in a field, after being refused my offer of returning it. I always smile to think that a metal detectorist or dog walker might have had a lucky find.

Zilla1 · 04/11/2020 18:16

If you want the best price, take it to a trade scrapper in Birmingham's jewellery quarter where we get a much higher rate than high street jeweller or 'buy your scrap gold' online or kiosk merchant.

Unfortunately, as PPs suggest, engagement rings are just about the highest margin jewellery. Almost always over valued and people don't haggle.

Zilla1 · 04/11/2020 18:17

I know PPs have mentioned having it remodelled. I can suggest a good goldsmith in the Jewellery quarter who could turn a sketch into a piece using the gems and gold. 1.2ct could make a centrepiece for a pendant or brooch.

JaffaCake70 · 04/11/2020 18:18

@SidneyCasing

I put mine in the bin Grin
My ex pawned mine before I had chance to do anything with it..
dancerdog · 04/11/2020 18:19

Does a thread like this put anyone off expensive engagement rings?

I didn't want one, as it seemed mad to spend 4 figure sum on a ring, but I do realise may people like a nice ring.

fabulousathome · 04/11/2020 18:21

I'd put it in an auction. Try Sworders www.sworder.co.uk/

They have jewellery sales. An auction house will give you an honest valuation. Good time to do it coming up to Christmas.

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 04/11/2020 18:23

Depends on how expensive it is, I made money on mine, the brand names appreciate.

How about buying another diamond and getting a pair of studs made?

switswooo · 04/11/2020 18:26

How about buying another diamond and getting a pair of studs made?

Wouldn't they have to match? Seems like a lot of expense.

Zilla1 · 04/11/2020 18:27

I wonder if there's scope for an engagement or jewellery-specific charitable donation campaign to women's aid or shelters? Does anyone have links to the organisation to suggest it?

2018SoFarSoGreat · 04/11/2020 18:30

Watched my cousin throw hers into the ocean - it was a glorious moment!

vanillandhoney · 04/11/2020 18:31

@2018SoFarSoGreat

Watched my cousin throw hers into the ocean - it was a glorious moment!
I did that with mine Grin

It was VERY therapeutic!

MaelyssQ · 04/11/2020 18:31

I gave mine to the local hospice charity shop. It was a gorgeous ring but not one I had any inclination to keep. They sold it at auction and made a tidy sum for the hospice. My ex was a violent bullying thug and I wanted absolutely nothing of his in my life. I'm glad that some good came out of something so awful.
