Popped into Poundland after school with my daughter.
They have 1 till on and the other side is self service.
Got to the checkout and the lady stops us and says "are you both together? "
I said yes
Then she reply's "I'm sorry but only 1 person allowed at checkout due to social distancing.
There was a queue of a few behind but nobody to our side of us.
So she said unless one of us went outside the store she was unable to serve me.
My daughter waited just outside the front door.
Aibu to think that's ridiculous?
Bare in mind no social distancing in any of the aisles,people walking all over the shop.
Yet my daughter couldn't stand next to me whilst I paid and packed my bag.

Surely, it depends on the branch of Poundland, I would certainly not leave my 9 year old outside some of the branches I have come across.

@middleager

I was in Poundland today and there were no restrictions and it was very busy.

Two friends in front of me in the queue with their kids, talking about waiting for a test to come through (this store is next to a test centre Shock). No facemasks on anyone in the group and one child coughing madly. I won't be returning!

see....retail staff can't win!!

If that's their new policy, they need to make it clear to customers as they're entering the shop, not when they're about to check out!

Some shops in my area (in the US), for example, have introduced policies on how many people can shop at one time, and they have an employee at the door monitoring who enters/exits and answering questions. A chain like Poundland should be able to do the same. Smaller shops here have big signs explaining their policy, rather than staff at the door.

Two adults are told not to shop together, but an adult is allowed to have children with them if they children can’t be left at home.

I think common sense has disappeared in this pandemic. Some people are ridiculous and stupid.

TableFlowerss · 03/11/2020 21:31

@Stripesnomore

‘The mother and child are in the same bubble so it makes no odds if one of them has it, chances are so does the other one. Worst case scenario they could have said child has to stand back.’

This makes no sense in any scenario. Two people with Covid shed twice as much virus and so are more likely to infect someone else.

Eh? There’s no point in sending a child outside to prevent them from standing beside their own parent (whom they share a bubble with).

They’ve been round the whole shop together and whilst it’s sensible and advisable for them to both keep two metres from others, it’s bonkers to make them separate.....

I'd have told them don't worry I won't take the shopping you can keep it and I won't be shopping here again. X

Surely, it depends on the branch of Poundland, I would certainly not leave my 9 year old outside some of the branches I have come across. I was thinking that. I work in a fairly ‘rough’ area and often shop with DS on my way home. It would absolutely not be safe to leave him outside without me.

I would not be leaving a 9 or 11 yr old outside a shop. The world has gone mad. Does child protectIon not matter anymore. Have a look at the 11yr old being abducted in broad daylight today in London and check out the latest stats on schoolchild to parent infections. Negligible.

Yanbu. I'm not sure how single parents are meant to manage

TableFlowerss · 03/11/2020 22:41

Just read about that attempted abduction in London of a school girl. Even less likely to want to leave a 9 year old outside after hearing that...

Sometimes they do really go overboard. And it does not even make any sense!
I still remember Tesco banning children going into the shop during the first lockdown. Well now I only pop in there as the last resort, and I have not spent much money with them since.

Two people have twice the chance of passing it onto the cashier than one person does.

MustardMitt · 03/11/2020 23:17

@Goldenbear

'spoilt'? What spoiling your 9 year old by caring 'too' much, jeez
No. Spoiling your kid by treating them like a baby that can’t be more than a foot away from you when they’re nearly ten. Making hysterical pronouncements about safeguarding and how they’d feel like a second class citizen by being asked to stand by the door instead of by the cash desks. By showing them that your need to have them near trumps the shop assistants pandemic-relevant and probably handed down from HO request. That doesn’t denote ‘caring too much’ IMO, it denotes ‘being a helicopter parent that treats their child like Little Lord Fauntleroy who can Do No Wrong’.

I don’t even agree with the policy, I just think you’re being hyperbolic and ridiculous.

So what’s a single parent supposed to do?

Still makes no sense as the cashiers serve customers dat in day out. They may serve 30 customers one day and 45 the next- so it doesn’t make any odds if the child is standing with their mam.... uncles of course you’re suggesting only adults are allowed in the shop....?

Banoffeepies · 03/11/2020 23:28

I work for Poundland, it’s not a company policy that’s down to the individual store. Wouldn’t dream of doing that in our store. I’d have put my stuff down and walked out personally.

notcreativeforacoolname · 04/11/2020 01:58

Go away and get more shopping, as much as you possibly can, let her ring it all up then at the end say "no thanks" and leave.
Ah hahaha!
