Popped into Poundland after school with my daughter.
They have 1 till on and the other side is self service.
Got to the checkout and the lady stops us and says "are you both together? "
I said yes
Then she reply's "I'm sorry but only 1 person allowed at checkout due to social distancing.
There was a queue of a few behind but nobody to our side of us.
So she said unless one of us went outside the store she was unable to serve me.
My daughter waited just outside the front door.
Aibu to think that's ridiculous?
Bare in mind no social distancing in any of the aisles,people walking all over the shop.
Yet my daughter couldn't stand next to me whilst I paid and packed my bag.

@ilovesooty

Quite a few shops are now going to be asking people to shop alone where possible.
Where possible is the key phrase here. A teenager, I could understand. a 9/10 year old? Would fall into the not possible area for me. Not everyone can leave kids at home.

@kowari

It's short for 'it's more than my job's worth [to do this]' Okay, googled and it seems you're right. I don't get it though, if it's more than your job is worth, then your job is worth less than what you are being asked to do, not more. Wouldn't you say 'my job's worth more than that'?
had you never heard the term before. it's quite old. what don't you understand. as you say; if it's more than your job is worth, then your job is worth less than what you are being asked to do,

so, as you say, your job is worth less, therefore by comparison, it, the thing asked, is worth more. it's more than my job's worth, to do the thing asked. i would put my job at risk to do the thing asked.
**@WitchesSpelleas Sorry, still can't get my head around it, still seems backwards to me. I'd be more likely to say 'Yeah, no, my life/health is more important' or 'Sorry, I need this job, have to follow the rules'.
Given the stigma now attached to the phrase 'it's more than my job's worth' that would likely be a far more effective way to express your position!

My original point stands, though - people are too ready to dismiss retail staff as 'jobsworths' without considering that, yes, that person might lose their job if they don't follow the rules. The last thing a retail worker wants is a confrontation with an angry customer, especially if they privately disagree with the rule they have to enforce, but if they want to feed their families and keep a roof over their heads, they have no choice.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/11/2020 20:34

YANBU, that's ridiculous. I'm a single parent and have taken DS everywhere with me since lockdown in March, no one anywhere has said this to me.

I wouldn't leave a 9 year old outside. I saw today that the UK terror threat level has been raised to severe. I also saw a video of someone trying to snatch a child in London....there are other threats in the world and things going on in the world that we need to protect our kids from. Parents had ways of doing things and it's absolutely ridiculous that now the only threat in the world we're supposed to care about is covid!

it's more than my job's worth, to do the thing asked. i would put my job at risk to do the thing asked. Can't get the jump between these two sentences, unless it was 'I'd willingly put my job at risk to do the thing asked as it is more important than my job', but if it's meant to mean the opposite, can't get my head around it.

@Meepmeeep my phone autocorrected the first part. I’m not on the clock either, I don’t have to triple check how I write on here 😂 You must work at the £ shop since you took so much offence.

Halliehallie9828 · 03/11/2020 20:49

@LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus

Some people are loving their perceived power since all this started! I went to Tesco and a man was directing people: "This way madam"; "Just wait there sir"! This was at the top of his voice repeatedly! I had a similar thing at Chessington at the weekend, telling us exactly where to stand all the time!
Same in primark today. A man shouting at the top of his voice for people to stand further back in the queue. 😂

Yet again your post makes zero sense. What does on the clock mean? No, I clearly don’t work in a pound shop, or indeed any retail outlet and no offence was taken. Do you think you’re better than people who work in shops? Your posts certainly indicate that you do.

middleager · 03/11/2020 20:59

I was in Poundland today and there were no restrictions and it was very busy.

Two friends in front of me in the queue with their kids, talking about waiting for a test to come through (this store is next to a test centre Shock). No facemasks on anyone in the group and one child coughing madly. I won't be returning!

'On the clock' means being paid (as in, clocking in to a workplace) - i.e. not on the clock = not doing this for a living.

AlwaysLatte · 03/11/2020 21:02

Also - just to ask again - does no one take their kid out and ever go to the toilet on their own? For example, if you’re female and they’re male? Or is it different because you’re not being asked to do that?
I've never left my DS outside unless someone was with me and could watch them, but I can literally hold it all day if I need to, I realise that's probably a bit weird (at least my husband thinks so!)

If that's their new policy, they need to make it clear to customers as they're entering the shop, not when they're about to check out!

Several shops where I am (in the US) have introduced limits on how many people can shop at one time so they have an employee at the front door monitoring who enters/exits and I've also heard them explaining their system to families. I'm not entirely sure what the checkout rules are here as I generally shop alone, but people know what to expect before coming in - that seems far more reasonable.

Goldenbear · 03/11/2020 21:10

Surely, it depends on the branch of Poundland, I would certainly not leave my 9 year old outside some of the branches I have come across.
