To be annoyed with how he addressed me?

I am an expert in my field. Got a random linkedin message from a man who is specialising in my field, he wants to make connections with people like me, fair enough.

He addressed me as "Dear Dr/Mamma "

I've half a mind to message him back to point out that he's being unprofessional/crass/women can be described as other than holding a doctorate or being a parent.

AIBU to think "fuck off"?

Or, is this just a cultural difference between a surly Scottish woman and an enthusiastic USA male?

He addressed you as "Mamma" wtf? Yeah tell him piss off daddy

SausagePourHomme · 03/11/2020 10:42

"Would you address a man as Dr/daddy surname?"

CatsAndEyeliner · 03/11/2020 10:42

He started his message ‘Dear Mamma’? Wtf?

I would message him back that I wasn’t his mother and his message was completely inappropriate and crass.

CatsAndEyeliner · 03/11/2020 10:43

WHO has voted YABU? I need to know the reason why.

Twizbe · 03/11/2020 10:43

I think it may be a typo. If he's in the US he might have meant Ma'ma.

In some areas (particularly the south) ma'ma is a very formal term of respect

WitchesSpelleas · 03/11/2020 10:43

"Thanks for your enquiry, son."

OrigamiOwl · 03/11/2020 10:44

Mamma?! WTF... That is not appropriate.

CatsAndEyeliner · 03/11/2020 10:45

Do you mean ma’am @Twizbe ?

sst1234 · 03/11/2020 10:45

Autocorrect - he must have meant Ma’am. Especially if he’s a southerner. Calm down people.

EggyPegg · 03/11/2020 10:46

He called you Mamma?!? If you have a doctorateabd it's on your LinkedIn, then calling you Dr is completely appropriate. Alternatively Dear Madam (thus negating all titles prior to introduction) would also have been acceptable to me. But Mamma is just fucking weird.

I say pull him up on it. You don't learn unless you know.

Twizbe · 03/11/2020 10:46

@CatsAndEyeliner

Do you mean ma’am *@Twizbe* ?
Yes, see, easy typo to make lol
AryaStarkWolf · 03/11/2020 10:47

@WitchesSpelleas

"Thanks for your enquiry, son."

WashingMachineCrisis · 03/11/2020 10:47

I think Twizbe has this one. It’s so weird surely it’s a typo.

EggyPegg · 03/11/2020 10:48

Though yes, his autocorrect could have changed ma'am to Mamma. But then he needs to learn to proof read.

HollowTalk · 03/11/2020 10:48

@Twizbe

Do you mean Ma'am? That would never ever be written down or used verbally in a professional way.
AryaStarkWolf · 03/11/2020 10:48

Maybe it was a type now people mention it. Maybe message him back and say you presume him calling you Mamma was a typo?

HollowTalk · 03/11/2020 10:48

I wouldn't even consider replying to him.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 03/11/2020 10:49

Pretty sure it was a typo for ma'am, albeit an unfortunate one

EL8888 · 03/11/2020 10:50

What a prick. I would be tempted to ignore due to his stupidity -he either can’t spell or thinks it’s an acceptable greeting Shock

Justcallmebebes · 03/11/2020 10:51

Another one for typo. Either Ma'am or Madam. I'd find it funny

AdoraBell · 03/11/2020 10:51

I also think it may be a typo. Many people in the US use M’am and Sir. In fact, my phone just suggested Mamma when I typed M’am.

That said, someone using Linkdin should double check spellings in their messages. Obvs everyone should but, but as Linkdin is used for business it’s more important than on FB, fe.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 03/11/2020 10:52

Perhaps from the US but from a different culture?

Twizbe · 03/11/2020 10:53

@HollowTalk I've heard more than one American verbally use it in professional contexts so maybe it is just a regional thing

readingismycardio · 03/11/2020 10:53

I hope it's a typo🙈

AnnaSW1 · 03/11/2020 10:54

It'll just be autocorrect.
