What do vegans do about headlice?

Just finished the first round of nit treatment for the term and this has just occurred to me!

Okay, what would Buddhists do?

And which veg feel pain? Is asparagus more sensitive than broccoli, or is it just making a fuss because it's entitled and posh? Do carrots have the worst deal because they're wrenched by the root?
Should we apologise before meals? Or just starve?
I need to know - it's cauliflower cheese for dinner and I feel brutal!

NYCDreaming · 02/11/2020 18:29

A bit off topic but i have wondered before about how vegans or vegetarians feel when the get a mouthful of midges or accidentally swallow a fly. I don't make a habit of going around with my moth hanging open hoovering up bugs but ive definitely swallowed a few when out running and suddenly faced with a swarm of midges

The same as anyone else would feel I suppose. A bit grossed out. I wouldn't kill a fly on purpose but sometimes these things happen.

NYCDreaming · 02/11/2020 18:34

@katy1213 obviously vegetables don't have feelings but if you're genuinely interested in the morality of your cauliflower cheese then the documentary Dominion is really good, and free.

Not quite the same, but dsis, a devout Buddhist, collects all the snails in her garden and relocates them. Gave her a laugh one day when she was going out with a bag of snails and ndn kid asked what she had in there? She said she was taking the snails to the park. Kids ran in and she heard them say “mum, that crazy lady is taking snails for a walk in the park!”

twobrews · 02/11/2020 18:49

Never had head-lice in 38 years (top tip, wash your hair less, natural oils keep them away).
Unfortunately this is completely untrue. I've worked with people who haven't washed for weeks even months and are rife with lice.
The hair is just something to hold on to while they consume our blood. They don't care if it's freshly washed, filthy or anything in between.

I didn't have headlice as a child but I think that was purely because my mother was very very particular and also doused my head in a shampoo called Suleo (no longer permitted).

I've had them twice since I had ds - because I am a bad mother and was less particular. I did get rid of them fairly easily both times though.

@Hoppinggreen

Not eat them

There are quite a few vegans on here without a sense of humour. As i live a sheltered life, I have never heard this question before & I rather like it.

DFAMA · 02/11/2020 20:23

Headlice are parasites, I kill them with a clear conscience

VanGoghsDog · 02/11/2020 20:34
@VanGoghsDog but they are harmful to humans, unless you're using a very strange definition of the word harm. They cause pain and discomfort to you and to anybody you hug. How are they not harmful?
They are not medically harmful.

The didn't cause me any pain when I had them. In fact, I didn't even know I had them untill dss mum saw them on him and let us know and we checked each other and we had them.

Harmarsuperstar · 02/11/2020 20:44

I'm vegan, but if a cow was sitting on my head, drinking my blood, I'd take steps to get rid of it

which veg feel pain? Is asparagus more sensitive than broccoli, or is it just making a fuss because it's entitled and posh?

All veg sense pain to a fairly similar extent. The main distinction from animals is that the information is transferred by chemical message rather than electrical. I'm not sure there is any evidence they are less sensitive to that pain than a simple animal like a cockroach or a P.E. teacher.

SisyphusDad · 02/11/2020 20:49

I was listening to an audio book on the history of religion over the weekend and in the section on Jainism it said that the more fundamentalist adherents would only eat fruit that had fallen from the tree.

Surprising for a group normally renowned for their self-depricating humour, tolerance of different views and light-hearted approach to life.

What do they feel pain with? Their little vegetable nerves?

Nope, as I said in that post they send chemical messages, nerves use electrical impulses.

You are funny and extremely brave Grin.

I'm itching!

NYCDreaming · 02/11/2020 21:07

I don't really know what you mean by medically harmful. They do cause pain and discomfort to most people.

Nah, the P.E. teachers won't get it :-)

Are you joking? Sorry if so Grin If not, yy I get you said they send chemical messages, but how can these be characterised as 'feeling pain' ?
giantangryrooster · 02/11/2020 21:19

@donquixotedelamancha
It darn well wouldn't be the pe teachers that would scare me. I only know one hardcore vegan, but she would eat a human alive for what you've said Grin.

donquixotedelamancha · 02/11/2020 21:59

I'll bet you a million quid you don't know any softcore, easygoing vegans.

More seriously, as I said upthread, the stereotype of vegans as humourless, judgemental and aggressive is nonsense. They enjoy having the piss taken as much as anyone else.

Of course if I'm wrong, we'll soon know :-)

ticktackted · 02/11/2020 22:19

The definition of veganism includes "as far as practical and possible". So although we aren't a homogenous group who have meetings to agree on everything, and you will get people with different views, most vegans take medication as needed and remove parasites from their children & pets. It's clearly different (in terms of necessity) to eating something you don't nutritionally need to eat. It's not really the extreme & complicated lifestyle people make out, honestly, it's just cooking with plants, & buying veggie burgers & oat milk where others buy burgers & milk Smile

DCIHoops · 02/11/2020 22:23

@ContessaDiPulpo - if you haven’t already, you could try encouraging hedgehogs 🦔. Garden pests like slugs are part of their natural diet.
