What do vegans do about headlice?

Just finished the first round of nit treatment for the term and this has just occurred to me!

OP posts:

@CuriousaboutSamphire

Well I try not to ask idiotic baity questions anyway Well, that's part of the great divide isn't it?

OP said, quite clearly, the thought occurred to her as she was involved in de-lousing. Most posters took that and responded in the same vein.

But not everyone - some took umbrage!

The point is that not everyone is vegan or gives veganism a moment's thought... until a situation gives rise to such a thought!

Then all vegans get 2 options:

  1. Join the conversation and explain.
  2. Snipe and reinforce that stereotype

Nice to see the same old same old happening here...

👍

For the slug issue. It's very on the boundary but I collect them up and put them on the bird feeder. We have a dog, they're a risk to her, and the birds need to eat.

sparklepink · 02/11/2020 12:42

vegans treat headlice, they're a parasite, FFS!

FlorentineAz · 02/11/2020 12:44

Wait - what vegetables feel pain???

hetanom · 02/11/2020 12:45

This is up there with "but bugs are killed when vegetables are harvested!!!11"

I appreciate it being phrased as the Slug Issue Grin makes me feel slightly less mad!

Mushrooms sing according to Autumnwatch

unmarkedbythat · 02/11/2020 12:48

I'm not being a bitch btw op, or if I am it's unintended!

Harmarsuperstar · 02/11/2020 12:50

Do mushroom have a central nervous system?

NotAnActualSheep · 02/11/2020 12:50

Some plants do release chemicals through their leaves or into the soil when they are damaged (usually by bugs eating leaves etc) which could be interpreted as feeling pain I suppose. Though is really just likely to dissuade the bugs from eating them, as they kind of need their leaves/ stems. My thinking is "no central nervous system =no pain = fair game". Hence I'm perfectly happy with a vase of flowers in water without seeing them as a vase of plant sexual organs in a pool of their own blood...

Harmarsuperstar · 02/11/2020 12:51

Or does any vegetable have a central nervous system that would allow them to feel pain?

TheShepherdsCrown · 02/11/2020 12:53

@GreyishDays

Yeah, what about bacteria, following that logic.
Err Zoologist here. Bacteria aren’t animals. So logically vegetarians and vegans are fine to consume/use them. Bacteria belong to an entirely different kingdom to animals and plants which are the most commonly recognised kingdoms. Simple explanation of the kingdoms of life here basicbiology.net/biology-101/kingdoms-of-life?amp=1

My question is whether vegans only eat vegetables that were fertilised with plant based fertilisers? Fertiliser is a by product of the meat industry. How do they know their supermarket carrots weren’t fertilised using blood and bone?

GlummyMcGlummerson · 02/11/2020 12:54

Veganism isn't so much about never hurting animals, but hitting back at the insensitivities in farming

Vegans are all different. An oft-quoted definition is that "veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose".

Key words being as far as is possible and practicable.

Ivy455 · 02/11/2020 12:57

I'm vegan and I'm with those saying that killing them is a necessary act as they are parasites. I de-flead my dogs and whilst I didn't enjoy the idea of killing them, I also didn't think it would be 'very vegan' of me to allow animals that I'm responsible for to suffer because of said parasites, Other creatures such as spiders, moths or slugs that make their way into my house are relocated back outside. Tbh I even feel guilty doing that lol as I know house spiders need to be indoors. I always hope they will find a cosy shed to stay in but more than likely they just sneak back in . It's about doing your best as others have said

WhySoSensitive · 02/11/2020 12:58

I have no ideA, I have no objection to her beliefs but she went (IMO) quite extremist with her views and her eating habits bordered on disordered after a while.

I love carrots and she told me that was cruel because it was a root vegetable? I don’t know. I still eat carrots.

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 02/11/2020 12:58

Surely plants don’t feel pain - its whole point is a signal to move away from danger. And they can’t! Well except slowly grow in the other direction I suppose

D4rwin · 02/11/2020 13:07

My friend shaves her hair off. But she does burn it all. Very satisfying she finds it too!

Hoppinggreen · 02/11/2020 13:07

Can I ask Vegans please, what’s the deal with Avocados?

highlyflammablegreymatter · 02/11/2020 13:08

Kill them gladly!

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 02/11/2020 13:09

You kill avocados Shock

NYCDreaming · 02/11/2020 13:10

I'm vegan. I would have no qualms about removing head lice. To me it falls under self defence - in the same way that I would be justified in killing an animal that was attacking me, I would be justified in removing from my body a parasite that was harming me.

The "friend who is a vegan" who avoids eating vegetables because vegetables feel pain is an obvious fiction Wink they exist in the same universe as the "uncle who runs a dairy farm" who lets his cows share his bed.

highlyflammablegreymatter · 02/11/2020 13:10

In fact, in all of my interactions with other vegans i’ve never heard anyone say that they’d do anything other than kill the horrible things.
