To think the conspiracy theory that we’re currently in the middle of World War 3 may be true?

Who are the Western World going to have to go to with their begging bowls when our economies have completely broken down due to CV?

What country do we most rely on for energy?

What country do we rely on for electrical equipment and machinery?

We’d be fucked if these Allies put their prices up?

AIBU to think a war is taking place right now without a bomb needing to be fired (just a virus) and we’ve already lost?

OP posts:

QAnon maybe?

LearnedResponse · 02/11/2020 10:40

“What country do we most rely on for energy?”

OMG the historic Viking alliance has finally returned and the French and Norwegians are taking their revenge!

I think when things go really bad, we like to have a clear 'enemy' to blame stuff on. So if crops failed hundreds or thousands of years ago, it was because the gods were displeased, or a witch had cursed your field, etc.
So similarly, when it's just a virus and a collection of all sorts of other things (a decade of austerity, upcoming Brexit, a government elected on one issue rather than on their intelligence or ability to actually govern, and that government's xenophobia in not wanting to learn quickly from other countries that have done well because of their previous experiences with other viruses/fully funded healthcare systems) that have made our reaction to this virus too late and too deadly.

But all of that is too abstract and messed up, so it's much easier for us to blame some kind of incredibly clever international conspiracy, rather than a bunch of opportunistic people doing a terrible job of managing an emergency.

yetanothernamitynamechange · 02/11/2020 11:02

Some of those points contradict each other. If we rely on this "other country" for machinery/energy/equipment then they too would be fucked if we could no longer afford all this due to our economy crashing. Less fucked than us but still. So the idea this is all part of some master plan is unlikely.
That said...
Are other countries likely to try to use the current situation to their advantage? Yes. Of course
Is there a longer term trend in which China (assuming thats the country you refer to) is growing in economic power and influence while the US and West generally is decreasing.
Is this trend exacerbated by the increase in nationalism/factionalism/localism schisming and conspiracy theories springing up everywhere YES
Will batshit conspiracy theories about a master-plan/sinister orientals help? No

BertieBloopsMum · 02/11/2020 11:04

I don't know - what country do we most rely on for our energy? Because I can't think of one.

BertieBloopsMum · 02/11/2020 11:05

And, er, Western economies are nowhere near close to "breaking down". But do carry on with your paranoia!

LonelyFromCorona · 02/11/2020 11:06
  1. Each Other so Europe, USA, Japan etc
  2. France (generated electricity), Russian Gas, Norway and middle east for Oil
  3. European countries, USA and Japan for manufacturing equipment and heavy machinery, China for cheap electrical tat and general consumer electronics
  4. Of course. But Britain has always been in this situation for the last 40 years.

Seems like all these risk are quite spread out to me.

LittleTiger007 · 02/11/2020 11:08

It’s all very biblical

No, I dont believe it but I bloody love it anyway. Where can I read more of this madness?

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 02/11/2020 11:33

I'm concerned about the degeneration of our country due to inept leaders, but I think you need to look up what a war is. It involves lots of people being killed, entire populations wiped out, settlements being wiped off the map. Economic dependency is not war. Get off the internet and go watch the birds or something.

Conspiracy theories only exist because humans feel the need to attach meaning to everything. Sometimes things just happen, like this virus just happened. There’s no wider conspiracy at play, China didn’t set this up to bankrupt the west.

Google "QAnon". Have fun!
cardswapping · 02/11/2020 11:40

I do hope this is a joke thread. Where some people see conspiracy it is usually cock-up.

Just in case this also applies:
The Earth is not flat.
I did not eat all the chocolate.

Okay the last one may be true... Grin

notalwaysalondoner · 02/11/2020 11:42

I think it is not an impossibility that huge economic devastation following coronavirus could lead to more global conflict, even between major nations. Typically in economic depressions, nationalism takes a front seat and governments tend to try and distract their populations by blaming others, either countries or ethnic groups.

I do not think that we are currently in the middle of some major conflict or that the conspiracy theorists are right.

wafflyversatile · 02/11/2020 11:44

Our economies are not collapsing because of covid. Our economic model is unsustainable regardless of covid.

Catladyisback · 02/11/2020 11:46

I think it's more likely an anti-China thread than a joke one tbh.

I presume when speaking of WW111 you mean WORLD war 111, if it was just the uk then that is not the world.

No I do not think it is ww111

But hey considering the way people are carrying on about it this idea is probably one of the most normal ones (yes I am partly joking about that bit)
