To find Tesco more expensive/lacking in products for home delivery?

Hi. Not sure if it's a regional thing. I've been doing Tesco online grocery shoppings - with delivery - for well over a decade now. It's convenient for me, especially as I don't have a car. I've never had any problems with it; I always set the filter to 'special offers' and didn't struggle for choice.
Nowadays - since Covid actually - it's a different story. I have a Tesco shopping booked for tomorrow, and am unable to add a single cucumber to my order! Confused The bin bags I normally get (Tesco own brand Brabantia style ones) have shot up to £4.50 a packet. The 'half price' section of the special offers has some Christmas presents, but that's about it.
They do have some good Clubcard prices, but shopping there now would absolutely entail having a Clubcard.

Has anyone else noticed the change?

Just looked on the 'only £1' section. There used to be loads of products on there, but now there's a grand total of 6, which comprise Sellotape and 5 flavours of the same juice brand Hmm

I haven’t noticed a change, but I am shocked by how much cheaper things are for Clubcard holders.
I just wish they would put the number of items you can get delivered up from 95. I know I can have as many deliveries as I want, but I don’t want multiple deliveries in a week !

triceratops12 · 02/11/2020 06:16

I honestly find Tesco the cheapest with more variety here, but it is the biggest supermarket where we live. Also scanning your Clubcard really brings it down, I save about £20 a week with it if I'm savy

bloodyhairy · 02/11/2020 06:18

Interesting. Maybe it's an online thing then.

Prices are definitely going up and offers down. The clubcard prices are good. They have also made a lot of stock discontinued recently.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 02/11/2020 06:26

I shop differently than you & I can't say I've noticed much difference. I do have a Clubcard, but I don't buy many products that it has the special prices on.

Angel2702 · 02/11/2020 06:38

We’ve always shopped at Tesco and had home delivery for years. I have found the range of products shrinking so much we now have to keep going to Sainsbury’s to source half our shopping, making delivery pointless.

Tesco really seem to be lagging behind all the other supermarkets when it comes to new products, exclusive flavours etc. The Christmas range has been dismal compared to most other supermarkets in recent years. It’s like they can’t be bothered to make an effort anymore.

Mindymomo · 02/11/2020 06:44

You definitely need to be a clubcard holder to get the best deals at the moment and this as well as price matching is the only thing they seem to be bothering with. Like you I’ve had hone deliveries since they started and have been lucky to have had weekly deliveries so far this year. I am bored with them having the same food all the time, but I did start ordering with Waitrose, but they are a lot more expensive and don’t stock everything.

plixy · 02/11/2020 06:46

I find it impossible to order fruit and veg from then recently. It's only multi packs available for most things, and I don't always won't a whole bag of something.
But I think what they do delivery is much fresher than Sainsbury's, who always seem to give me stuff that's well past its best

I tested out most of the grocery delivery services over the past few months and Tesco by far delivers the freshest items with the longest use-by dates. I've been so impressed.

AlternativePerspective · 02/11/2020 06:52

I alternate between Tesco’s and sainsburys to the extent I had two identacle baskets a few weeks running and would book the one which was cheapest, and Tesco’s consistently came out around £9 cheaper than sainsburys.

Could be worse, you could be shopping with Ocado. They’ve gone to the dogs apparently....

bloodyhairy · 02/11/2020 06:53

Tesco fruit and veg are pretty tasteless though.

Sainsbury's have always been more expensive.

Tesco seemed to have reduced their offers on branded products such as pasta sauce.

Their clubcard deals can be really good. But, you need to hunt them down.

Monty27 · 02/11/2020 07:11

CBA with online. Did it once many moons ago and it didn't work for me. it's tedious. Even worse than going to the shop myself

Tumbleweed101 · 02/11/2020 07:16

Yes, I’ve notice online choice has been massively reduced since lockdown. I wonder if it’s to streamline there picking process. I’ve started going back for my midweek shop as I always did a big online shop and a midweek odd items shop before lockdown but then stopped going in midweek for ages. Will be stopping that again for the next month though.

Ch3m · 02/11/2020 07:20

I've definitely noticed tesco prices shooting up. And those stupid clubcard prices... Its the prices things used to be! You just need a clubcard now. Hardly any branded products have special offers now. Particularly pasta/curry sauces, though I've now taken to making my own curries to save pennies, so thanks Tesco.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 02/11/2020 07:23

Same experience OP. No stock of certain items all the time and higher prices. Have used Tesco/Sainsbury's for years but will go back to just Sainsburys I think.

FlorentineAz · 02/11/2020 07:25

We are really struggling at the moment to get chicken thighs and strangely enough cucumbers!

Madvixen · 02/11/2020 07:26

@bloodyhairy they have reduced their numbers of special offers but they are also having a bit of a problem with the website at the moment and it's not showing all the offers available. I did my order on Friday and ended up with about a tenner off my bill because I'd got items that actually were on offer they just weren't showing on the site

AlternativePerspective · 02/11/2020 07:45

Actually yes I’ve struggled to get chicken thighs.

But I’ve also struggled to get king prawns both from Sainsburys and Tesco’s.

ZombieAttack · 02/11/2020 07:50

I’ve found that Morrison’s have a really limited range online with so much being out of stock. I’ve always found Sainsbury’s limited and expensive.

ReallySpicyCurry · 02/11/2020 07:51

It's been crap since before lockdown. I go between Tesco and Sainsbury's depending on who gives me a money off voucher, I have a club card and nectar card, so most times I get a few quid off my Sainsbo shop which brings it down to Tesco level. And Sainsbury's has much more variety.

We aren't high earners so I'm careful about what I spend, and going by my own experience, Tesco was at its best in terms of quality and value about 6 years ago. Since then they've stopped stocking quite a lot of things in their value range, and rebranded the rest in the hope that nobody would notice, but at the same time they haven't added much variety in their higher price ranges. So if you're on a budget Lidl or Aldi is going to be a better choice, but if you have a bit more £ then Sainsbury's or the like is going to offer more of a range.

I live rurally, so for me the attraction of online shopping is obvious, but we've also had a new shop open locally that makes a point of competing on price with Tesco, which also tells me Tesco isn't good value any more, because the village shops are generally a fortune in comparison to the supermarkets. I now order one or two huge deliveries a month from a supermarket, and pick up fresh stuff weekly from the local shop and it works out cheaper than the weekly Tesco shop I used to do

think they're going to be really buggered in a few years actually

FippertyGibbett · 02/11/2020 07:52

I wonder if it’s individual stores or areas, as I get a cucumber and chicken thighs every week.
I do notice that they put something as unavailable for a while but then it comes back in from a different supplier, presumably cheaper for them to buy than the previous one.

ProudAuntie76 · 02/11/2020 07:53

No funnily enough out of the major supermarkets, I’m finding Tesco the cheapest and most reliable in terms of having what I order show up. They price match Aldi on a lot.

Asda is dreadful. Loads of subs. Loads of errors.

Morrison’s is good but not as cheap as Tesco.

Sainsbury’s ridiculously expensive.
