Bore off with your crappy fireworks

You’re waking my baby and scaring my rescue cat - and your displays look rubbish anyway. Fireworks in people’s back gardens should be BANNED!

i agree completely... my dog is freaked out by them.

I would like to see fireworks banned altogether but I don't suppose that will happen.

HowManyToes · 01/11/2020 20:10

YANBU. I've had to drug my dog (prescribed by the vet) every night for the past week because wee arseholes like to set fireworks off in the fields near my house. My poor boy is terrified and refuses to go outside to pee.

The sooner the sale of fireworks is banned the better. I really can't understand how it's ok for members of the public to just stroll into a shop and buy explosives!

ShinyGreenElephant · 01/11/2020 20:15

Same! My gran died this morning ive spent 3 days in the hospital and 3 nights up and down with a scared baby and 2 cats clawing my head. I'm 5 months pregnant and utterly utterly fed up. Never known fireworks all week miles before bonfire night

RIPworkingmums · 01/11/2020 20:20

I have no problem with organised firework displays. I do have a problem with general public being allowed access to explosives. I remember as a teenager a group of us letting some off in a park late at night and one fell over, all was fine but could’ve been a lot worse! I honestly can’t understand why they are available for anyone to buy.

Connelloni · 01/11/2020 20:35

Normally I’d agree with you and we’d never buy fireworks for home, but there won’t be any displays this year, and my children have missed out on birthday parties, Easter, Halloween, and Christmas is looking likely to be very different to normal. For this year only, we will be setting off some fireworks at home. Sorry if your cat doesn’t like it.

NancysDream · 01/11/2020 20:46

It's always the weekend before and after bonfire night and the night itself (if not a weekend). I know it can seem antisocial, but FFS this year of all years, try not to be a killjoy, there's really not much joy left

Mistymonday · 01/11/2020 20:46

100% agree OP. They need to be banned.

Mistymonday · 01/11/2020 20:47

They also cause a lot of air pollution and frighten wildlife.

Mistymonday · 01/11/2020 20:49

Animals die of fear induced attacks, how's that ok? Last year someone lost their beloved horse this way. That is more important than your kids ‘having a bit of fun’. Priorities!

There's no also joy in trying to relax with the dogs next door barking incessantly because they are scared by them.
TheDoctorDances · 01/11/2020 20:53

They were going off for an hour between 1am and 2am here. My poor dog was going crazy, barking his head off. This was after being sedated as he gets so scared he nearly gave himself a heart attack. Nobody is entertaining their kids at that time.

Thankfully my neighbours are very understanding.

Ohtherewearethen · 01/11/2020 20:55

@NancysDream - why does 'joy' have to involve utterly ridiculous levels of noise that people and wildlife can't opt out of? Why should people who may have had their incomes cut to barely anything have to pay for sedatives from the vet to keep their animals calm? Why should people with dementia or PSTD have to suffer through the noise? Why should wildlife have to die of fright/injure themselves trying to escape or find comfort from the noise? Why should the environment have to suffer the effects of fireworks? Is considering all of these things really being a 'killjoy'? Is there nothing else you can do to find joy other than watch some unnecessarily loud explosives, louder than bombs going off, light up the sky for a few seconds?

Dawnlassie · 01/11/2020 21:09

I see lots of dog owners wants fireworks banned because it scares their animals. Well many people are scared of dogs so should they be banned too?

I dont think a complete ban is in order. But they need a suitable curfew. Its the fuckwits that send them up at 11pm that piss me off.

TheScreamsTheTerribleScreams · 01/11/2020 21:15

And who on earth is going to police that 'suitable curfew' Dawn? Seeing as the Police can barely cope with really serious issues I can't see them sending a couple of plods round at 1am to remonstrate with juvenile idiots setting off fireworks. If the bloody things weren't available for the public to buy it wouldn't be an issue.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 01/11/2020 21:16

They don't scare my baby or animals, they terrify me though. I remember the home firework displays we went to as children. Quite frankly it is a wonder we all made it to adulthood at all. I know mine is not a unique view.

Fireworks at home are so so bloody dangerous. A bunch of idiots, normally a beer in hand, lighting explosives in tiny gardens, not exactly what I would describe as a good idea.

Ohtherewearethen · 01/11/2020 21:17

@Dawnlassie - a human is much better able to manage a fear of dogs than all animals/wildlife are able to manage their fear of absurdly loud fireworks. Having a curfew so they don't disrupt your sleeping pattern won't help wildlife who are literally petrified because of fireworks.

m0therofdragons · 01/11/2020 21:21

When did babies stop being able to sleep through fireworks? I visit family in Surrey who live under the Gatwick flight path and that’s so much louder than fireworks.

I love fireworks (although don’t have the confidence to do it in my garden but don’t blame those who do around 5 November).

Youandmeareluckytobeus · 01/11/2020 21:33

There is someone in my road who has had the most spectacular, lengthy firework display this evening. It was amazing and definitely didn't look rubbish. Looked professional and blooming expensive. It was very loud though.

I think if they go on for days then it isn't fair but, if just the nearest Saturday to bonfire night, I think it is fine.

Misandrylovescompany · 01/11/2020 21:40

Arseholes, these people. No justification for it. Sparklers and such are more than enough to please the kids. Anything with significant bang factor is well antisocial.

Thermo · 01/11/2020 21:43

Selfish. Surely you can find other ways to entertain your kids without the need to set off stupid explosives for them and upset other neighbours, kids and animals.
Lockheart · 01/11/2020 21:50

Regardless of where you come down on the debate, can we please bore off with the endless carbon copy threads about exactly the same fucking thing?

InFlagranteDerelicto · 01/11/2020 21:58

I agree OP. A couple of years ago, the house opposite were having a party & one of their fireworks fell just before it fired. DH had just gone out to ask if they could keep the shouting & swearing down a bit as DD was in bed trying to sleep, & it hit the front wall of the house a couple of feet above his head, just as it exploded. To be fair, they were drunk rather than being deliberately obnoxious, & they did apologise & kept it down a bit after that.

Bluemooninmyeyes1 · 01/11/2020 21:59

YANBU- they are so dangerous, especially when they get into the wrong hands- which is usually feral, troublesome teenagers. They are also extremely frightening to babies, young children and animals. Anyone who thinks they are ok are welcome to come and witness a family member’s rescue puppy who was physically shaking and vomiting today out of pure fear, then tell me again that they are harmless.

BadlyDrawnSimpsonsCharacter · 01/11/2020 22:19

Totally agree OP. People having shitty firework "displays" all over the show here. I can just about tolerate it on a Saturday night, but come on now, it's Sunday. Kids are up for school tomorrow and most of us are up for work.
Garden/personal fireworks should be banned - can't fucking stand them.

GrapevineFires · 01/11/2020 23:01

I completely agree. Last year my DS was being pushed in his buggy by his DF. Some idiots were letting off fireworks from their back garden which backed onto a heavy traffic urban street. The firework landed 5 yards from where they were walking. It’s terrified me since.

If it was one night, I’d just avoid going anywhere after dark but it’s not - they’re set off anywhere from 5pm til early hours for weeks.

And that’s not even mentioning pets.
