Or is anyone else annoyed when people copy and paste the WHOLE of the OP in their post before responding? I get why people copy and paste small sections if they are responding to a particular part of the post. But please don’t copy and paste the whole bloody thing. We have eyes! We have already read it at the top of the page!!!

That’s from hitting “quote” I would think?

Normal on most other forums to reply to a specific post, so that’s why people do it.

I agree it’s a bit annoying.

switswooo · 01/11/2020 18:01

I think YABU. If you press quote, it selects the whole quote, you can’t select which but you want to quote.

I do get your point though. Not everyone can be bothered to asterisk and tag the person, it takes time.

RudeAF · 01/11/2020 18:04

And when they post entire newspaper articles instead of a link 🤦🏻‍♀️

It is annoying.

Sorry.

OhCaptain · 01/11/2020 18:10

Nobody is copying and pasting whole posts. It’s the quote function.

Baileyscheesecake · 01/11/2020 18:10

OK in that case I don’t understand the purpose of the quote option. Can anyone from mumsnet HQ explain to me the reason for it? It’s only recently that I’ve noticed some people quoting the entire post before their response. Is the quote option a relatively new thing?

See this is what I find mildly annoying, people who think they can mention HQ and HQ will come running like a genie. It doesn’t work like that!

TheSeedsOfADream · 01/11/2020 18:14

The quote function works like the quote function works everywhere else

So you can reply to a previous poster directly.

People asked for it for years.

I do get annoyed by posters copying and pasting entire newspaper articles though. Especially when they've put the link. It's a bit headmistressy like they don't trust us to click and read. (Which tbf, nobody probably does)

Soubriquet · 01/11/2020 18:16

I think those with premium accounts can quote small sections whilst us plebs have to quote the whole thing

you cant edit the quoted post - its all or nothing
SoupDragon · 01/11/2020 18:18

It's purpose is to quote a post - that's all. It does exactly what it says on the tin. People wanted it rather than having to faff about with copy/paste/bold

ninninannonoonoo · 01/11/2020 18:18

The quote option is relatively new.

It is very useful when you want to quote a short post, and it also includes the name of the poster.

However, I totally agree with you that quoting posts which are many paragraphs long is not realy helpful. You can just use the @ function to make it clear what/who you are referring to.

I have recently seen a few posts where the first person to respond will quote the entire OP. There really is no need to do this and it just looks silly.

If you quote a post you can only copy the whole post. There's no way of editing it.
Sparklingbrook · 01/11/2020 18:21

I don't like the quote function but there was so much whinging that MN wasn't exactly the same as every other site so there it was. Makes the thread much longer but I use it out of laziness sometimes.

Stand by for a 'Like' button next. Sad

Chemenger · 01/11/2020 18:22

It’s to stop those posts that just say “ I totally agree with the PP” or “Chemenger, as usual, makes a good point” expecting us to read their minds about what they are replying to, which might be 10 pages back. I do agree that it is seldom necessary to quote the OP, if it’s clear that is what is being responded to.

Chemenger · 01/11/2020 18:24

Did you guess which post I was replying to?

WhySoSensitive · 01/11/2020 18:25

When you’ve got lengthy threads that is going on multiple directions your one reply can be taken the wrong way.

You quote the person you’re replying to for clarity of your comments.

MiniMum97 · 01/11/2020 18:28

I prefer it when people use the quote function. Then I know what they are responding to. It's more annoying to have to trek back through the thread to find the post they are responding to.

This. On really long threads or fast moving ones I think it’s really useful.

I don't know why you need someone to explain a quote function, surely the clue is in the name Confused

What I don't understand is when posters go to the trouble to copy and paste a whole post when they could click on quote - is there some way of using MN that doesn't have the quote function? I don't mean quoting an already quoted post.

🤣🤣
MiddleClassProblem · 01/11/2020 18:30

Sometimes someone is talking directly to you in a thread but they might post several posts to you and you want to reply to a specific one, it’s much quicker and easier.

And sometimes everything they say is relevant to what you need to say.

Plus it @s them so that know you’ve said it rather than having to scroll the thread in case you replied.

chomalungma · 01/11/2020 18:32

I use the quote function if the whole post that I am replying to is short - especially when I am refuting a comment someone has made about me.

It’s a heck of a lot better than “I agree with *@Baileyscheesecake“ then having to scroll back through loads / hundreds of posts to read @Baileyscheesecake*‘s message
Baileyscheesecake · 01/11/2020 18:53

[Chomalungma] 😂😂😂 I knew someone would do that! 😂😂😂
