Things aren’t that bad

If the last number of threads are anything to go by, a lot of people haven’t been financially impacted by the virus. In fact a lot of people have come on to say they are saving more than ever (saving on travel costs etc)

Where are all the people who have reduced incomes, lost jobs & financially struggling?
The news is constantly reporting on jobs losses yet that doesn’t seem to be reflected on these boards??!

Cos mumsnet is not real hth

Merename · 01/11/2020 15:04

MN average income appears to be higher than the general population. However I have heard people on here who are struggling, I have no doubt they exist.

tippytappytime · 01/11/2020 15:06

My wages have dropped by 50% and the child maintenance hasn't been paid since June. Happy now?

LoseLooseLucy · 01/11/2020 15:06

This pretty much.

NetflixWatcher · 01/11/2020 15:12

Single mum here. I've managed to save more than I ever could before. My jobs stayed the same but I had no school travel or clubs to pay for. Not been out. So managed to save alot. I know I'm lucky.

Funkypolar · 01/11/2020 15:12

2021 will be worse with a no-deal Brexit. My guess is unemployment will hit around 15%. We are all going to be worse off - lower wages, austerity and tax rises.

BlackberrySky · 01/11/2020 15:14

Because those seriously affected by job losses, mental health and financial crisis don't tend to be inclined to pootle about on MN.

Skysblue · 01/11/2020 23:21

Read the room.

I know someone who lost their job because of the pandemic. Which meant they lost their (privately rented) home. Which meant they had to move in with far away family and the children had to change schools.

I’m glad you aren’t personally affected, it hasn’t been too bad for me either but... Read the room.

My business had a turnover of £120,000 last year and for each of the past 9 years. It is currently projected to be under £25,000

I haven't had any personal income since March.

My staff member will probably have to be made redundant- I have managed to pay them since March although they have not worked.

Is that good enough for you?

BathTubGin · 01/11/2020 23:39

And all I get all day is requests from charities (mainly) to work for them for free as they are suffering from CV19. They seem surprised when I decline (I am already a Trustee at 3).

Hadjab · 01/11/2020 23:39

I saved loads during Lockdown 1.0, which is great because my job ends on November 28th.

These boards are not representative of general society...unless you believe 2 in every 10 people earn £150k +, for instance.

That's not true. Everyone here is destitute apparently.

Op, I am not sure where you are looking but if you look at for example foodbank thread, many peopel there are talking about most people not being able to afford even extra week food shop.

MarcelineMissouri · 01/11/2020 23:46

Our income is down 20% with a high likelihood that dh won’t have a job in a few months.

HTH.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/11/2020 23:47

The young are disproportionately affected by job losses

They're not the demographic for here

Summerdayshaze · 01/11/2020 23:47

I know loads of people who have lost their businesses, jobs or had income dramatically reduced. Two lost cafes, one her hairdressing premises, one worked in events so that’s shelved and now answering phones for the test and trace, one worked in a good finance job and is now delivering pizzas. One is a musician who is struggling mentally and financially.

Mittens030869 · 01/11/2020 23:53

We haven’t suffered financially, thankfully, with my DH WFH; it’s helped us, as I’m suffering from long Covid and it would have been very hard for us to cope with having our DDs at home if he’d had to go into the office in the city centre.

But it isn’t just about those of us who can manage financially. Thousands of others can’t, having either been furloughed or actually lost their jobs.

Tigger03 · 01/11/2020 23:53

Where I work (large professional services company) they’ve cut pension contributions and all promotions have had the pay increase deferred by 6 months. So whilst I’m very fortunate to have a job, and the pension cut doesn’t immediately impact me, I’m worse off than I would have been. They also let a few people go.

WhereYouLeftIt · 01/11/2020 23:54

"Where are all the people who have reduced incomes, lost jobs & financially struggling?"

I expect they're too bloody busy trying to put food on the table and keep the roof over their heads to have any time to spend on Mumsnet?

addler · 02/11/2020 00:00

I lost my job. I'm also pregnant, and do a job that is very difficult to find another position for when already pregnant. I've been unemployed since July and furloughed since April before that. I've never been without work since I was 18 so financially and mentally it's been a very difficult year.

rainbowlou · 02/11/2020 00:02

My husband lost weeks of work in the last lockdown and expects the same this time, this will absolutely cripple us financially as our savings have now gone, our adult dc who lives at home lost her job in June due to covid and is struggling to find another one, I’m on a low income because my job fits around our youngest.
So yeah we are here op.
HTH

wheresmymojo · 02/11/2020 00:18

I was a high earner - about £120-140k.

This year probably £30k if we're lucky.

We're pretty fucked to be honest.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 02/11/2020 00:26

I'm a nurse, so personally am okay financially and have a secure job, but about a third of the patients I talk to every day are still furloughed or have been recently made redundant. It's awful for people, and imagine things will get worse with the new lockdown.

My boyfriend runs his own business and it's made about 1/4 of what it did last year.

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/11/2020 00:29

WTF? I've got to go to a foodbank. I only get a very small per cent of my min wage, wages , as I made up extra hours before
I've got to support two people on about £100 a week to somehow include mortgage, bills, food, pets, car (live v rural)

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/11/2020 00:29

As my partner works in entertaiment he's had no work all year apart from working for two gigs. He does a huge tour every year for a famous band and that pays the mortgage pretty much for a year
We are FUCKED
