Christmas Day for two

MLMbotsgoaway · 01/11/2020 11:18

So for the first time in my life ever, I think Christmas Day will just be me and DH.

I really love seeing my DPs and in-laws etc but for various (and obvious) reasons it’s just not going to happen this year.

I did look last week at going overseas but in light of what’s now happening tbis isn’t going to happen either.

I can’t quite bear the thought of doing Christmas “normally” but scaled down so thinking about how we could make it a totally different sort of day.

Aibu to ask for any bright ideas - whether it’s different food, a new routine etc.

No children?

Bed, champagne, presents, sex, party food. Maybe a walk if you’re feeling enthusiastic and all the best Christmas films if you’re not.

thecatsthecats · 01/11/2020 11:24

Don't forget to schedule in obligatory zoom calls Wink

OhioOhioOhio · 01/11/2020 11:24

Hire a hot tub.

MLMbotsgoaway · 01/11/2020 11:26

@PotteringAlong no children.
It’s sort of not wanting it to feel like a typical Sunday but also not wanting it to be too “Christmas Day-ish” so that I compare and find it lacking.

It’s funny as I said last week “oh finally I can go to the church and the pub with you before lunch (he does this ever year and usually I don’t go as am cooking and have company) then realised it’s going to be bloody unlikely.

Last year we had baked camembert with fancy bread with a Christmas movie on. Yummy, cosy and barely any washing up!

MLMbotsgoaway · 01/11/2020 11:28

@thecatsthecats am trying to organise a zoom Christmas gathering for what would usually be a family get together - average age of the older lot is probably about 78 and some are rather technophobes - so going to be interesting!

I envisage lots of cameras pointed at walls Grin

Facing the same.

I've thought of: having Christmas Dinner in the evening (normally have it at lunchtime) so we can have a long lie-in.

Plan loads of films to watch.

Depending on weather, go out for a long walk.

madcatladyforever · 01/11/2020 11:30

I'll be on my own this year with the cat. I'm going to have a nice long bath, good food and spend the day on my lovely new comfy sofa watching sentimental christmas films and doing craft projects with the heating turned up. It will be lovely.

What part of her post about 'just me and DH' and 'a day for two' made you assume she had children and was just neglecting to mention them?
RuthTopp · 01/11/2020 11:34

Depending on where you live. Could you get all the Christmas dinner ready. i.e Veg , Potatoes , a small piece of meat / vegetarian dish.
Then set off on a lovely long walk / hike for the day coming back around 4ish.
Then you can put everything in the oven to be ready in a few hours for an early evening meal .
Take something delicious to eat during the day be it cheese and biscuits or your favourite sandwich filling .
We do this most years and you will see other people out doing the same , and even families . This is our Christmas tradition.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/11/2020 11:35

We love ours whem we get to be just 2 of us.
Don't compare what it could have been, it 2ill make you miserable. Make it the best it can be.

We sleep in, get stockings (gifts on 24th), posh brunch, naps and movies, walk, dinner, drinks, monopoly, drinks, movies.

So chilled!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/11/2020 11:36

Maybe try to cook some Christmas dinner from other countries to spice it up. 😁

MLMbotsgoaway · 01/11/2020 11:40

@SchrodingersImmigrant oh I love that idea. I know Dh won’t want to break too far from a Christmas dinner but that could be really fun.

Also like the idea of having the meal in the evening instead.

I’ve been ok over this year and braced not seeing family etc (literally have seen parents twice since March and usually I’d see them once a week). I just know that Christmas Day will be the one that will get to me if I let it.

It’s just DP and me for Christmas - we are going with Potterings suggestions - just a chilled lovely Christmas-ish, but not very, time. Zoom calls with family members later in the day too

cyclingwife · 01/11/2020 11:44

We're not doing a traditional Christmas day so are planning on buying our favourite food (probably duck breast, cherry sauce, chunky chips and loads of veggies, with profiteroles or similar for dessert) and our favourite drinks.

We'll each choose a film to watch and mainly hibernate. Bliss to me

userxx · 01/11/2020 11:47

cherry sauce,

Say what?

amusedbush · 01/11/2020 11:49

We've done Christmas Day just the two of us since 2013 and I love it.

On Christmas Eve we watch a film (this year will be Christmas Chronicles 2 Grin) with baked camembert and bread. Then on Christmas Day we open our presents and eat chocolate for breakfast. I phone my granny for a chat and then we take the dog to the park mid-morning. Dinner is the normal meat and trimmings but everything is from M&S, oven-ready in disposable foil trays because we're not trying to impress anyone!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/11/2020 11:49

@MLMbotsgoawayglad you like it. Have a look at few countries and go for it😁 It's very easy to get ingredients for anything nowadays.
We combine Btitish and mine so it's an odd Christmas dinner hybrid with duck instead of turkey (because turkey is just... Bluegh).

Get some board games. I am thinking about getting Explosive kittens or Bears vs Babies😂

moose62 · 01/11/2020 11:55

Two years ago we were on our own as a family for the first time ever. We went for a long walk in the morning and then sat down to a huge Indian takeaway (we bought it the night before and put it in the fridge). We then played Scrabble all afternoon. It was actually very enjoyable but not at all christmassy.

MLMbotsgoaway · 01/11/2020 11:55

I’ve tried to push for duck on Christmas Day for years... this will finally be my moment Grin

In my 20’s I spent Christmas alone as I was working late on Christmas Eve and back on 27th and didn’t want to travel. Everyone was horrified.

I did the whole thing in miniature- cooked breakfast, with mini bottle of champagne- roast dinner with mini bottle of wine, Baileys with Christmas TV.

I loved it!

cyclingwife · 01/11/2020 11:58

@userxx

Sorry should be a cherry and red wine jus to go with the duck breast, we call it cherry sauce

amusedbush · 01/11/2020 12:02

We did duck last year. Neither of us like turkey so we change it up every year. We've done gammon, beef, chicken, duck, pork...

One year we got fancy (read: extortionate Blush) ribeyes and did an amazing steak dinner with blue cheese sauce.

userxx · 01/11/2020 12:03

@cyclingwife Oh bugger, I was so looking forward to slathering it on everything. I bet there's something similar out there, I'm off to google.

MLMbotsgoaway · 01/11/2020 12:06

@amusedbush can We join you as a bubble? Smile Your food sounds wonderful!
