Christmas Day for two

MLMbotsgoaway · 01/11/2020 11:18

So for the first time in my life ever, I think Christmas Day will just be me and DH.

I really love seeing my DPs and in-laws etc but for various (and obvious) reasons it’s just not going to happen this year.

I did look last week at going overseas but in light of what’s now happening tbis isn’t going to happen either.

I can’t quite bear the thought of doing Christmas “normally” but scaled down so thinking about how we could make it a totally different sort of day.

Aibu to ask for any bright ideas - whether it’s different food, a new routine etc.

I'm going to be in my own with the cat
Planning a soak in the bath with a podcast, a nap, cheesy films (Christmas or not) and a giant Indian takeaway

It's likely to just be me and DP here, we're thinking of having a roast on xmas eve (lamb shanks, roasties and prob not much else) and then for xmas day getting in a load of cheese and wine, maybe some posh choccies.

Make it a lovely self indulgent day. We like to start with bucks fizz (not the bottled shite, freshly squeezed OJ and fizz) with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.
Relax and read our new books.
Get dinner on (whatever we fancy, often beef rib or a goose if we are a bit flush, duck or lamb) otherwise. Go for a walk if not raining. Eat. Watch corny family xmas movies. Drink. Snooze. Eat more. Drink more.

Can recommend a small goose for 2 people. Feels like a special treat as it's delicious and let's face it, who eats one on a normal day. They look huge but the meat layer is much thinner than chicken or turkey. One for 8-10 people (ha, never believe serving sizes) does us xmas dinner then enough cold for a couple of lunches.

We usually have a lie in due to being hungover (too much alcohol on Christmas Eve!), swap presents, have coffee and chocolate for breakfast then we normally start preparing a little Christmas dinner for us. After dinner we are normally so full that we just end up snuggling on the sofa watching films or Christmas specials. Followed by more food and alcohol! We would normally see family members but this year who knows. I much prefer Christmas at home anyway.

@WitchesSpelleas

Facing the same.

I've thought of: having Christmas Dinner in the evening (normally have it at lunchtime) so we can have a long lie-in.

Plan loads of films to watch.

Depending on weather, go out for a long walk.

Evening Christmas Dinner is absolutely the future! My dad insists on us eating at 1pm, but none of us usually have our main meal at lunchtime, so it's a bit odd and we're never really that hungry for it .. yet on the few occasions we've had to have it in the evening I've looked forward to it and really enjoyed eating it .. and for some reason I love eating dinner, washing up (always my job!) and being able to get straight in front of the TV, snuggled down watching something good (or actually more likely crap from the 70s if I'm at my dad's!)

This year we are also hoping to have a huge lie in, then get the turkey in before 'family zoom' in the afternoon, then enjoy dinner. Best part is, we can both drink too, as neither of us have to drive home!

I wish our house was big enough to host all the time as I love being at home at Christmas, but it's tiny!

On the plus side, less to clean!
@MLMbotsgoaway that wouldn’t deter her. The back story and the fact she refuses to understand that covid is actually dangerously (out with her friends 4 times a week) means she’d just arrive anyway. She’ll miss that she has to wash her hands on arrival and before eating, that she will be told to cover her mouth if she coughs (has had a small cough for years -nothing wrong though), that
She isn’t staying over but going home at 10ish which means she misses nothing. Telling us she doesn’t eat much then eating a three course meal and wanting food an hour later, one year she just picked up the chocolates I had received from my friend and opened them 😮. She had the audacity to offer me one!
Get your DH to greet her at the door with a squirty hand gel! Literally 'this is what we do when we get home, so welcome, merry Christmas, here you go - two squirts of hand gel' and you can come inside!

Christmas eve - a present each, champagne and go out for dinner if possible - if not romantic evening dinner cooked together

Christmas Day - lie in and sexy christmas music, make love, go out for a walk and say merry christmas to other walkers. Come back presents under the tree to be opened. Make sure you get dh something extra special. Zoom christmas pre lunch drinkies followed by a very lazy relaxed dinner with the finest wines known to man.
Fireworks in the garden (I am going to get flamed) but we are doing this and always have. It really adds to the occasion. if you are friendly and have nearby neighbours, tell them in advance you are doing a small christmas display and they can grab their glass of mulled wine and from their gardens you can toast christmas day together!

Snuggle up in the evening with christmas films, make cocktails - the best one gets to choose the christmas tv!

I wonder if you will ever go back to your old christmases! Grin

@Lovely1a2b3c DH will need to go and collect her. Then she’ll faff like fuck so a twenty minute journey to get her will be two hours!

sensibleheartxo · 07/11/2020 11:23

I'll probably be working on Christmas Day so planning on making Christmas Eve special with just DB and I. We'll have a long lie, open stockings in bed, I'll have a nice bath and we'll eat sweets and picky bits. Then we'll go out for a late lunch/early dinner at DB's favourite restaurant and soak up the Christmassy atmosphere in town. Then home, put on our matching pj's on, watch tv (hoping the Two Doors Christmas special is on Christmas Eve) eat lots of chocolate and crisps with dips then open the rest of our presents.

I like the idea of a goose @Hollyhocksarenotmessy so might make a mini Christmas dinner for us at some point in December.
