To ask if you would forward face an 11 month old baby

Mil wants a car seat. She bought one I was not happy with without asking me. I've checked the ADAC and I would prefer an i-size isofix seat (basically the same as what I have) and have agreed to cover the cost difference as it is huge! Anyway, I'm half wondering, with the driving they are likely to be doing any impact would, hopefully, not be too bad. A forward facing seat would be cheaper and last longer but tbh I think I'd rather just go with my gut on this and not worry about the money element.

Wwyd?

No way. Rear-facing till 5/6 here - statistically much safer.

Tyranttoddler · 29/10/2020 21:20

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

5/6 yr olds are facing backwards in a car seat??? Seriously?
It's safer in a crash apparently.
TillyTheTiger · 29/10/2020 21:20

No way. DS has only just started forward facing and he's a 98th percentile 4yo. DD is almost 13mo and will probably also RF until 4yo.
Some idiot slammed into the back of my car on a dual carriageway when DS was 8mo. I was hurt, the car was damaged, DS was fine because he was in a decent seat, properly fitted. Car safety isn't something to take chances with, if you can afford a RF seat.

Forevercurious · 29/10/2020 21:21

My DS is almost 11 months and I wouldn’t even consider forward facing him yet. The minimum age is 15 months but rear facing beyond this is a lot safer than forward facing.

Could you get a seat that swivels and can be turned forward facing when your little one is older so the seat lasts longer?

liveitwell · 29/10/2020 21:21

No way. But a safe seat doesn't have to be isofix so long as it's installed correctly with the seat belt

NastyPeace · 29/10/2020 21:22

No regular-ish journeys. The price isn't over important.

I can't lend my seat out unfortunately. I work very unscoial hours. I can't swap a seat over at 4 am or leave it because i don't trust them to fit it correctly I think it would be a struggle to get it in as they are heavy seats.

Go with your gut! I would do exactly the same thing and keep rear facing, especially when they will be in the car a couple of times a week. Trust your instincts 😊

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 29/10/2020 21:23

Gosh. Mine were still in the baby carrier seat at that age!

yorkshirepudddiing · 29/10/2020 21:24

Both of my kids rear faced till 18 months.

They are now 3 and 6.

We used age weight and size appropriate car seats for them both and regularly check they are fitted securely. They both suffer with terrible travel sickness and I don't think travelling backwards would help them.

I've never seen a 5 year old rear facing. Where on Earth do their legs go?!

Honeyandapple · 29/10/2020 21:26

No

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/10/2020 21:26

If it's the Cybex Cirona/Sirona look out for the shell height. Unless you and dh are very short, dc will outgrow in height way before weight.

autumnbus · 29/10/2020 21:27

Yes my older dc one was 5.5 the other 6 when changed to forward facing
My younger one currently rf at 2 and he will stay that way till 5/6 as it’s safer

NastyPeace · 29/10/2020 21:27

@TheFormerPorpentinaScamander this particular seat is from birth. My DS is a chubby soul and I doubt would fit in a baby carrier Grin

EasterIssland · 29/10/2020 21:28

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

Yes I would because my baby got too tall to face backwards and had to be turned around before a yr
My son is 2.5. Still rear facing. He’ll TIL 4-5 yo. There is not too told to rf.

Also legally kids need to rf TIL they are 15m

tissueboxx · 29/10/2020 21:29

I think the minimum age is now 15 months so would try to do it till then. Could you share your seat until then and then use the seat she bought?

Both my dc rear faced until 4. We had the britax 2-way elite which is one of the cheapest and most space saving. You could check it out.

autumnbus · 29/10/2020 21:29

We have used britax 2 way elite From 4 and joie 360 for 2 year old

Their legs aren’t in the ‘usual’ position you get when ff but they had enough legroom and tbh they had never known any different so never complained !

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/10/2020 21:29

Tyranttoddler wasn’t debating the safety I meant practically - I’m assuming a car with rear facing seats and not a car seat reversed. Not everyone has a car with reversed seating.

NastyPeace · 29/10/2020 21:30

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz ah that's interesting. It is. I'm tall and DH thinks he is tall, but DS is not showing any sign of growing in length, only outwards.

OP posts:
tissueboxx · 29/10/2020 21:30

Sorry just seen you can't share your seat!

Tyranttoddler · 29/10/2020 21:31

I'm a bit confused but I do mean car seats that rear face, in the same way that infant carriers do.
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/10/2020 21:34

Ok now I’m confused- I drive a Vauxhall cross, my 3 yr old is 1metre long and her car seat is secured by the seat belt- how would that rear face?

SinkGirl · 29/10/2020 21:36

My twins are still rear facing at 4 although one is about to outgrow it (18kg limit). They are a small though. We need new seats but they still need harnesses - you can get extended rear facing seats to 25kg.

No way are 12 month olds too tall to rear face.

NastyPeace · 29/10/2020 21:37

@OnlyFoolsnMothers I believe you can get swivel 360 seats up to 4 years which are secured by a seatbelt. I've not looked at them as I prefer isofix. Just checked my seat will seat DS up to 105 cm.

OP posts:
Tyranttoddler · 29/10/2020 21:37

I have the joie stages. It's secured by a car seat and faces backwards too. My just turned 2 year old is pretty tall at 96cm but fits it.

Tyranttoddler · 29/10/2020 21:37

Secured by a seat belt that should say
