AIBU to think a 6 year old is too young to be forced to where a mask?

This is now the law [in France] edited by MNHQ for clarity. I think this could be very frightening for a small child.

They have. People who have suggested I am responsible for people dying, among others. Look harder.

flaviaritt · 29/10/2020 17:37

He has no reason to find it scary because I've never made a big deal about it or given it any negative connotation

Nor have I. My child finds it uncomfortable nonetheless.

movingonup20 · 29/10/2020 17:39

Saw lots of kids in them today, it's not scary and they actually seem to like them. A lady locally is making beautiful cat ones with whiskers which several young visitors to the shop were wearing. I wish adults wouldn't project their feelings onto kids who are far more adaptable

dementedpixie · 29/10/2020 17:40

I've just seen that they will need to wear them all day in primary school in France. That's certainly not happening anywhere in the UK. Face masks may be required on over 5s in Scotland but only for short periods of time not a full school day. Not sure I would be happy with it either

No they haven't. Show me.

It’s there in black and white. If you choose to deny it, that’s fine. We can all see it.

My daughter said “No, I don’t like it.”

What do you think I should do?

Please If anyone else on this thread can see where a poster has told flaviaritt that she is responsible for people dying, and that her child should be forced or she should force her to wear a mask
  • please find it for me. I've looked and I can't see it anywhere.
My pretty Herculean patience has just gone ping.

@flaviaritt

Currently in England there's not a requirement for under 11's but if I had a primary aged child I would be trying to encourage them to wear one for short periods to build up tolerance because it's getting worse everyday and I can anticipate masks for 5-10 year olds being on the cards to bring us in line with Scotland and most other countries.

I found it really hard at first but I'm getting used to it and it's no different for kids. My friends dd uses a multi way tube thing (from skiing) rather than normal mask (has asd, lives in USA where compulsory from 2!)

Kids can catch covid, kids can pass on covid so I'm glad most parents here are choosing to have kids in masks if they go (non essential) shopping with them

I agree. If I had a 5-11 year old I would begin trialling it for short periods. But I have a younger child.

CherryPavlova · 29/10/2020 18:08

Children in Asian countries seem to manage just fine. Many children insist on swimming goggles that are far less comfortable. Its about adults projecting their anxiety onto children. That's never beneficial.

flaviaritt · 29/10/2020 18:13

I literally put a mask on my child and waited to see her response. She thinks I think masks are funny and pretty. That’s all she has ever been told by me.

FreshFreesias · 29/10/2020 18:22

What a daft law.
The world has gone crazy.

KatharinaRosalie · 29/10/2020 19:26

France had almost 50 000 new cases today. It's either masks and other sanitary measures reinforced, or close all schools. My DC will wear their masks.

Exactly. It's like anything else, sometimes you have to try some different designs or something to get one that'll work but what with snoods, disposables, visors that clip to glasses, visors on baseball caps, etc etc most of us will be able to find something that works for ourselves and child when necessary. And you're much better putting your energy in finding a way that works than arguing about an invasion of human rights.

It reminds me of many other things to do with having little ones - finding a cup a one year old deigns to drink from, or school pinafore that is not too scratchy.

saraclara · 29/10/2020 19:55

I have read many scientific papers that clearly state wearing masks is indeed bad for our health.

Can you link to these please, OP?

Marzipan12 · 29/10/2020 21:36

@flaviaritt posters go quiet because we have a life and commitments away from aibu 😂 it has zero to do with you.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 29/10/2020 23:36

Kids over 5 have to wear them in shops/public transport in Scotland. My 5 year old is fine with it, she has a unicorn mask and checks it's in the bag when we leave the house. Her biggest issue is that it can make her glasses steam up if it's not on properly!

PhilSwagielka · 29/10/2020 23:38

No. Kids are tougher than you think.

All day? That is ridiculous and I wouldn't be happy at all about that.

I don't know what you've been reading, but that really isn't true.

TheSunIsStillShining · 30/10/2020 00:08

I have read many scientific papers that clearly state wearing masks is indeed bad for our health.

And I have read a scientific(ish) paper on how it's bad because you breath back the carbon monoxide you breath out.

Linning · 30/10/2020 02:51

Live in California and here kids as young as 3 are asked to wear mask all day (school and public places) and they are perfectly fine, and they have been doing it since March as we have been in uninterrupted strict lockdown since then (playgrounds literally reopened for the first time 2 weeks ago since March)!and kids don’t complain (not the ones I am surrounded with anyway) as when explained to them well, they understand why they have to wear them and don’t see it as any more of an inconvenience than anything else they are requested to do, adults on the other hand....

If adults had the same adaptable attitude as kids, things would be so much either.

Linning · 30/10/2020 02:51

Easier*

Doryhunky · 30/10/2020 02:54

It is going to be hard for children who rely on lip reading.
