Mumsnet have moved to a new Consent Platform so you may have recently been asked to re-set your Cookie preferences. If you're inclined to "accept all" then there's no need to read on. If not, then you may have noticed that there is no longer a "Reject All" option and you have to turn all the permissions off individually, including the disingenuous "legitimate interest" cookies. This takes a few minutes, which is ok if you only need to do it once, but are you sure your preferences were saved? Some people are finding that they weren't. To check, scroll down to the bottom of this page and select "Privacy Settings".

Also, at the bottom of page 1 of the cookie settings make sure you select "vendor preferences" because that takes you to a second page where there are around 35 more permissions to reject. See pic.

There's a thread running about this on Site Stuff, and MNHQ are aware - they have a FAQ page answering some (but not all) questions [[https://www.mumsnet.com/info/consent-management-platform-faqs]]. But more Mumsnetters may need to be aware too.

So far I've been asked to do this 3 times over several days, and each time have had to untick the "legitimate interest" boxes and save, so I suspect Mumsnet is "accidentally" not saving the preferences of those who always try to opt out.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 28/10/2020 08:55

Thanks rogue

Switching them off takes so long and is so frequent that i gave up yesterday

I am watching that other thread though and depending on the reply it might be a good idea for me to have a break from mumsnet

Its really annoyed me as this is once again the ONLY website i use thats doing it

It also annoys me on other websites when they wont let me look at the site if i say no cookies, usually thats their loss though 😀

I like websites that go....

Website...do you want cookies?

Me...no ta

Website.....no problem, you might not get the best experience but its up to you

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 28/10/2020 08:56

And what big said

Its obviously done on purpose

Cleanerdilemma · 28/10/2020 08:57

Thank you for this.

I have been rejecting the legitimate interest ones but didn’t realise that the vendor preferences bit meant I had to click on that and reject a load more so haven’t done that.

The whole thing is ridiculously frustrating.

Giggorata · 28/10/2020 09:02

I've painstakingly gone through them all, checked back later and they've all reset!
This might be me having a break, too.

rogueogue · 28/10/2020 17:05

Yep, seems to be happening that way for everyone who has commented. I'd be interested to know if anyone is finding that their opt-out preferences for legitimate interest cookies have been saved (?).

Very cross about this

I turned off all the cookies I didn't want multiple times already.

Went back in to check that theynare indeed as I submitted the,, to find that 48 had changed. Many clicks later, I returned to a thread to have the sodding pop up pop up again with all the cookies I had rejected turned on. Another 48 clicks later, his in earthbcan inbe sure tat it has actually worked this time?

This has been going on for days now. It's not good enough

Frdd · 29/10/2020 09:03

Just placemarking here because I’m on the other thread in site stuff.

I turned them all off the first time but got so fed up yesterday I just accepted all.

Does anyone know - if I’ve accepted all and then turn them all off - is anything that might scrape data left behind as a result of me previously accepting all?

ZigZaggyZoo · 29/10/2020 09:11

Thank you. I was aware this is a pain but was not aware there were 'vendor preferences' too. FFS.

Tissueboxcover · 29/10/2020 09:20

I have just been through turning everything off, clicked submit.
Went straight back in and all the essential interest buttons are back on.
This cannot be right.

@Frdd I don't know if rejecting cookies removes previous cookies that an organisation put on your device, but I suspect not. If you're worried, use your browser's privacy settings to remove cookies. On Chrome you can remove all cookies or do it individually by website.

I have a reminder in my calendar to delete all cookies every month or so because even though I'm quite careful with settings there are always some that get through.

It isn't right, and has been going on since Monday

MNHQ may need to report themselves to ICO soon, because this has been ongoing for so long.

Unless they can confirm that they have suspended all marketing cookies until fault is found and fixed, and that all user data that reached companies during the faulty period has been expunged.

This is a pretty major breach

RoseAndRose · 29/10/2020 09:30

Is there any way to remove cookies individually on an iPad?

Frdd · 29/10/2020 09:34

Copying from other thread. I am not happy.

Frdd Thu 29-Oct-20 09:32:04
I just went and turned off cross site tracking and turned on don’t allow cookies on my safari and I deleted my history.

Couldn’t get in at all and was constant,y getting thr pop up and turning them all off and going back and back.

Only way I could get logged in was to allow cookies, and allow cross site tracking in safari and accept all in the pop up.

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/10/2020 10:27

I did wonder whether one of the ones that you switched off was the cookie that recorded your cookie preferences.

Frdd · 29/10/2020 10:33

Possibly. But it shouldn’t be this hard.

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/10/2020 11:02

You can make it as hard as you like provided you still keep your customers (or, rather, your product supply).

Xenia · 29/10/2020 11:04

It is a difficult issue for websites. I remember going through a massive list on linked in and facebook to remove just about everything. I didn't really want all those choices. I would rather there were an option remove everything other than what is needed to operate the site but companies due to data laws follow best practice when they giveyou so much choice. On the other hand the so much choice makes it less of a choice as none of us have time to go down a long list - an example of GDPR and other data laws making things worse, not better.

AuntieStella · 29/10/2020 11:11

Not really, both ICO and ASA can take an interest in whether the site is acting fairly.

At the moment, it is hard to see how requiring 48 clicks to turn off all the 'legitimate interest cookies' then immediately making the pop up reappear 3 or more times with them all re-enabled would be considered to be acting fairly. Let alone users going into their own privacy setting page to discover that the tabs they'd turned off have all re-enabled.

This has been going on since Monday, and information from MNHQ has been scanty, which is disappointing but not unexpected, given previous levels of communications when issues have arisen.

It is very easy to choose to use a version which both enables 'reject all' and then saves the choices (in ways the user can check). Blaming google doesn't quite cover what appears to be going on here.

@MNHQ, I hope you've considered this. Could you comment please?

And

I remember going through a massive list on linked in and facebook to remove just about everything.

I wouldn't mind doing that if things stayed removed, but they don't. They reset to legitimate interests on every time a new page is opened.

Frdd · 29/10/2020 11:15

So I’ve gone and read the ico stuff on legitimate interest

ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-data-protection/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/legitimate-interests/when-can-we-rely-on-legitimate-interests/

This is aN extract

If you intend to rely on legitimate interests you need to be confident about taking on the responsibility of protecting the interests of the individual. If it is more appropriate to put the onus on individuals to take responsibility for the use of their data, then you may wish to consider whether consent would be a more appropriate lawful basis.

Mnhq are putting the onus in us to take responsibility by making us unclick the sliders so how is this compliant with that statement?

AuntyPonsonby · 29/10/2020 11:21

I'd thoroughly recommend using the TOR browser (for this and other purposes). It's highly anonymous and all cookies are a non-issue. Mumsnet currently seems to think I'm in Russia (?) and the adverts I do see are in an alphabet I can't even read - far less annoying Grin

(TOR is easily downloaded to Android phones, and I assume other devices.)

ConquestEmpireHungerPlague · 29/10/2020 14:14

Thanks @rogueogue, this is really helpful. I've had to do it 3 times this week. When I checked just now, the last lot of opt-outs had been saved, but I didn't know about the Vendor Preferences page so I've had to do all of that too. If I have to do it all again anytime soon I won't be very happy.

@MNHQ, this is not cool at all.
