Buying up stock from shops and selling it online at a huge markup?

Yesterday I saw Poundland’s LOL cushions being sold for £20 on fb marketplace. This person had a huge supply. So they have gone into Poundland bought a huge supply of £1 cushions and selling them for £20 each.

It really annoys be, especially when it’s things people want to buy their children.

I see it all the time when shops put things on sale, they get sold out quickly and the next thing you know it’s on eBay or marketplace at a ridiculous price parents are either forced to pay or have to disappoint their child because they can’t get what they have asked for.

OP a lot of people on here will pretend to disagree with you as declaring the OP to be wrong seems to be a trend on Mumsnet....

@TallFriendlyGinger

Not unreasonable that's really dishonest and shitty behaviour.
It may be shitty, but how is it dishonest? Confused

As long as people are stupidly willing to pay such crazy money for rubbish items, there's not much anyone can do. There's a market for it...

CheetasOnFajitas · 27/10/2020 13:13

I’m Shock at someone paying £750 for a Wii! Not saying that buying the second one and selling on at a bit of a profit was wrong, but that is one hell of a mark up!

BMW6 · 27/10/2020 13:14

@BluebellsGreenbells

Do you think they pay tax on their profits or advise the benefits agency of their money making schemes?
Well of course they are required to - and if they don't they are likely to get caught and prosecuted the same as all the others cheating and fiddling.

Having worked for HMRC for over 30 years I can tell you that the number of tip-offs we got were considerable!

Whathasthiscometo · 27/10/2020 13:16

@ExclamationPerfume

I call them out on it. I comment and say these are only £1 in Poundland. I hate greedy people.
Absolutely!

Pretend to disagree about someone selling something for a profit? Really? Confused

You're allowed to swear on MN Op Hmm

I agree though, it's crap that people buy to sell for a hugely overinflated price. I'd like a Harry Potter advent calendar from Primark, they're £16, but can't get one as the same people are buying them and sticking them on EBay for 3x the amount. And bigger idiots buy them.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 27/10/2020 13:25

@Whammyyammy shitty behaviour of your OH. And you, if you condoned that!

feelingverylazytoday · 27/10/2020 13:30

I like it when they get caught with egg on their faces because they can't resell them. Like those idiots that bought those cheap TVs from Tesco on black Friday a few years ago.

the "idiots" might not have a Primark, might prefer not to drive and really not want to put foot in a shop at the moment.

Posters are not questioning the morality, really they are just miffed they can't get everything for cheap.

The ONLY reason I am not selling second-hand items for more than I pay for them new is because no-one would buy them Grin. If I could make a profit, I would have no moral issue, why would I? I am happy to sell, people are happy to buy.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/10/2020 13:42

I would consider contacting hmrc if it’s real bulk. That’s just nasty. A lot of people do this with next sale stuff. Laura Ashley things etc. I have been buying lot of homeware from next recently. Instead of sending something back, I sold it on at the price I paid as it was lovely, just not right for my home. I know I missed a trick in some way. But I am not going to profiteer.

vdbfamily · 27/10/2020 13:44

I honestly cannot see any issue with this for anything non essential. I have taught my kids to do a proper online search when wanting to buy something because everything can vary vastly. For someone on benefits of minimum wage, spotting a bargain in Poundland and selling on at a profit is a way to make a bit extra. It is similar to buying stuff at car boot or jumble sale and selling on eBay for much more.

Thehop · 27/10/2020 13:47

This is how all businesses work surely? But it cheap and sell on at a profit?

Could be someone that’s lost their job.

If you don’t want them don’t buy them but I’d leave them to it.

cabingirl · 27/10/2020 13:48

This is such a weird thread - this is literally how all retail works. I think it's ethically wrong when it's essentials particularly in the middle of a pandemic - those people who bought all the hand sanitizer etc.

But all other goods - that's how retail is supposed to work. And yes, a lot of people who do this do declare their profit for tax if it's how they make their living.

I love watching those Youtubers who buy the pallets of rejected Amazon products without knowing what they are getting in their box and see if they can make money reselling it.

grenlei · 27/10/2020 13:49

What annoys me are people getting stuff for free or cheap and selling it on. Especially if they've acquired it purely on the basis they're skint.
I know the admin on a couple of freecycle pages locally and they have to bounce people on a weekly basis for selling stuff on.

StanfordPines · 27/10/2020 13:50

@Whammyyammy

My OH done similar about 12 years ago when you could not get a Wii anywhere one Christmas. He went into argos on the off chance, as our son really wanted one and they had 2 in stock, about £110 each. He bought both.

He advertised the other one on gumtree for offers around £750, a guy phoned immediately and came round within the hour, didn't haggle and paid the £750.

We didn't force him to buy it, he was happy with the price, his children got a Wii and we had a lot of extra £££ for Christmas.

Its called supply and demand

It’s called a dick move. What a twatty thing to do.

As for the case in the op, I couldn’t get worked up about that. If people are stupid enough to pay £20 for it then that’s their look out. But I agree that I’d comment that they are from Poundland.

DTIsOnlyForNow · 27/10/2020 13:51

Primark have a calender for 16 quid, and you're complaining someone bought it and is selling it for 50 quid.....but you've never said a word about Primark buying it in Bangladesh for 50p?
So one person making a few quid is abhorrent and taking the piss, but a multibillion quid conglomerate making vast amounts of money is just life?

WTF are you people wittering about? Hmm

jessstan1 · 27/10/2020 13:52

What on earth is a LOL cushion?

AdditionalCharacter · 27/10/2020 13:52

My point being that they're knowingly buying a £16 advent calendar for an extremely over inflated price. Regardless of how much I wanted something, I refuse to pay ridiculous amounts than what I could in the shops.

DS wanted a hatchimal for Christmas a few years ago when they first came out, couldn't get one in the shops but they were on eBay and social media for £200 upwards. Think in the shops they were £60. Needless to say he didn't get one from FC, but did buy one for £60 with his Christmas money the day after Boxing Day.

Thecobwebsarewinning · 27/10/2020 13:53

If it’s any comfort these people are as likely to lose money as make it. It’s very hard to predict which piece of cheap tat will develop a cult following and sell for a huge markup. For every item that they can charge a fortune for there will be others that they stock up on and then can’t sell. That’s the risk sellers take in a capitalist market.

A few years ago I had my heart set on some little ornamental lights that cost £5 each in B&M. I live 45 miles from the nearest B&M and when I made the trek, they had sold out instore and online . EBay had some that were being sold for £15 each but I wasn’t prepared to pay that. A few weeks later the seller re-offered them at a much more reasonable £7 each. I was happy with that and bought several but the seller can’t have made much on the deal.

About 30 years ago our country of origin got a surprisingly long way in an international sports event. My BIL had hundreds of baseball caps and T-shirts printed to commemorate it and planned to sell them at screened fixtures in the 2 pubs he owned. It will come as no surprise to you that our country was eliminated at the next match! What had been selling like hot cakes were then instantly completely worthless. Ever the optimist, the merchandise is still stored in MILs attic in the hope that if the team ever does that well again he will be able to sell them as vintage memorabilia!

grenlei · 27/10/2020 13:54

I also used to work with someone about 15 years ago who, when there was a half price toy sale at our local toy retailer, would queue outside the door before it opened and then clear the shelves buying 10 or 15 or however many of that years must have toy, and flog it on Ebay for full price, often to people in the local area who couldn't get to the shops in time. There was something a bit distasteful about that.

jessstan1 · 27/10/2020 13:57

Whammyyammy:
"My OH done similar"
......
Why does that not surprise me?

Leaannb · 27/10/2020 13:58

@Devillishlypicklypickles

My 6yr old is really into Transformers and Lego, some of the specific Transformer toys and Lego sets he has asked for are going for hundreds of pounds on eBay, needless to say he didn't get those! Even at 6 he can understand that this is too expensive and that he could get loads more Transformers than just one for £100 and he's been perfectly happy with the alternatives he's got! If people weren't willing to spend such stupid amounts on this stuff nobody would bother selling it at those prices I guess!
Those Legos sets can cost hundred of pounds from the Lego site itself. Their values increase after Lego discontinue the set. They are considered collector's items at that point and are worth the extra money. Especially to Lego nerds
