AIBU to ask why the fuck my dishwasher won’t clean anything?

It’s a Bosch dishwasher, maybe six years old. I have, in no particular order -

  • repeatedly rinsed through both dishwasher arms
  • cleaned the filter
  • filled the dishwasher salt
  • filled the rinse aid

Neither the top nor the bottom racks are remotely clean, I put the dishwasher tablet in and it doesn’t clear it away, when I open it at the end of the cycle it’s sitting their looking at me.

It’s been almost a week, I’ve tried everything I can think. I’m going to take a sledgehammer to the bastard thing if I have to open it one more time to find still dirty dishes.

Please help!

I can’t tip Sad it’s built in!

We had a very similar problem, I normally buy supermarket own brand capsules. We thought perhaps the element had gone, once we’d ruled that out, I bought some “premium” capsules. It’s seems to have solved the problem.

NaturalStudy · 26/10/2020 20:43

I found that the mesh thing that sits underneath the filter had broken on mine. £5 for a new one on amazon. Pull out the filter and then furtle around for a meshy bit that sits underneath it.

The Internet says this in regards to the pump

Fairy platinum tablet. Pour a little boiling water on the tablet before you close the lid of the tab compartment. Sorted.

Maturestudentneedshelp · 26/10/2020 20:47

Pressed send to soon - 'Sorted ours out' that was meant to say.

dementedpixie · 26/10/2020 20:47

Check the arms are attached properly after cleaning. Open the door mid cycle - is there water in there?

AlohaMolly · 26/10/2020 20:57

There’s definitely water in there, everything is always wet, very wet, after it’s been on.

Thank fuck the pump stuff is in the bottom of the machine and not at the back. I don’t think I could be bothered to try and pull it out. It would just have to become some sort of fancy storage unit.

We had this problem for a while. Slowly getting worse and worse then the water wasn’t heating up.

It was the heating element. We had it replaced and it works better than ever

AhNowTed · 26/10/2020 21:04

It's the force of the water through the jets that makes the arms spin, so if the arms are clogged the water doesn't 'jet' and therefore the arms don't spin.

I would try a dishwasher cleaner.

Or a load of white vinegar:

worriedandannoyed · 26/10/2020 21:07

I've recently switched to dishwasher liquid instead of tablets. My dishes have never been so clean! I got it in Aldi for £2.99 and it lasts ages

orangenasturtium · 26/10/2020 21:10

@AlohaMolly read PigletJohn's posts! He is a plumber and one of MN's most helpful posters. If he can't help you, none of us can!

I have a similar problem. We have a Smeg dishwasher. We bought it on the recommendation by the assistant from Curry's who told us that there were increased reports of Bosch owners complaining. Just to note, our Curry's only had two integrated dishwashers on show... Smeg and Bosch. So we bought the Smeg.
Cups and glasses in the top rack rarely clean.
We've always done the deep clean service but you wouldn't know.

We've resorted to putting the Fairy Liquid capsules onto the bottom of the dishwasher which has helped .

I just long to open the dishwasher and be able to put everything away. No chance.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 26/10/2020 21:20

I spent hours cleaning my dishwasher, took it to bits. Used dishwasher cleaner. Tried soda crystals and white vinegar. Still didn’t clean.
Tried those powerball dishwasher tablets and they were amazing! Perfectly clean. I was using Aldi tabs which were leaving a gritty layer in the filter. Pity if just bought 2 boxes of them, because they are shite

Viviennemary · 26/10/2020 21:20

I second Fairy Platinum. Also took me a while to realise that if I had washing machine and dishwasher on at the Same time dishes weren't clean.

Oliversmumsarmy · 26/10/2020 21:29

I also swear by Fairy Platinum.

Get a huge bag from Lidl

Even using these tablets my machine was not washing. It did need to be repaired

Agree Aldi tablets were problematic

Song damnit. Stupid fat thumbs.

Eloisedublin123 · 26/10/2020 21:31

Really hot cycle

Theaspidistraiswilting · 26/10/2020 21:40

My dishwasher cutlery basket has holes so the cutlery stalls through and you can't pull the drawer in and out. Fine, I thought, I will buy a new one - £58!!! Am mending the old one which is more ecologically sound I suppose...

Singlebutmarried · 26/10/2020 21:40

@AlohaMolly

THE ARMS HAVE NOT MOVED

THE ARMS HAVE NOT MOVED

ITS THE AAAAAARMS

However, the tablet (in the top cutlery tray) also has not dissolved even though there was steam coming from the machine when I opened it.

Where do I goooo from here??
(Now that the eeeeend is near...)

Bonus points if you know where that’s from!

Once more with feeling OP

  1. Put this ^^ in on an empty wash
  2. Repeat with full wash (you sprinkle it on the bottom)
  3. Always have a cup of white vinegar in the top section

We had horrible issues with ours not cleaning and leaving a white residue.

The steps above have solved them, everything is now sparkling clean.

Our dishwasher is nearly 20 years old so these were last ditch attempts before replacing it, thank goodness they worked!

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 26/10/2020 21:42

Hated our Bosch for this reason. Expensive and useless. And it beeped a trillion times.

Was glad when it finally died and we got a cheap Beko. Marvellous!

Rainbowllama4 · 26/10/2020 21:45

I have a dishwasher but rarely use it, by the time I’ve scraped the leftovers off and rinsed everything I might as well wash it up by hand.
