AIBU to think this is disgusting

Bought a footstool from DFS (not cheap either) just over a year ago. Cushion is same fabric. Look at the state of it! Apparently this isn’t a fault with the fabric Angry. What do you think - am I being unreasonable to say that this is a fault with the fabric and it shouldn’t be used on a footstool if it isn’t colour fast? Apparently no one else has complained so it can’t be a fault Confused.

I'm not sure if that would be accepted as a valid defence. There can still be a one-off fault, even if there's no evidence of any other cases.

I might just dye it then as it’s cheaper than having it recovered in velvet by DFS

You need to check the fabric composition. Natural fabrics (such as cotton) will take dye easily, but synthetics won't.

TibetanTerrier · 26/10/2020 14:27

@doublehalo
If it fades it wasn't fit for purpose-end of.

I'd be surprised if that's true. The purpose of a footstool is to support the feet. The fabric may have faded, but it's still a perfectly usable footstool.

Dreamscomingtrue · 26/10/2020 14:32

Did you pay by credit card, try to do a claim through them?

ConquestEmpireHungerPlague · 26/10/2020 14:43

Seems completely normal to me that something left in sunlight would discolour. Not sure why the sunlight coming through 'bifolds' is so relevant they have to be mentioned three times. Confused DFS wouldn't have struck me as the type of retailer who would bend over backwards to make sure you're happy even when you're in the wrong, so the offer to reupholster if you pay for fabric is a result imo and pretty generous.

Thesuzle · 26/10/2020 14:44

Sorry, but my eye was drawn to the not very well done buttoning
Uneven folds and looks loose in places

satnighttakeaway · 26/10/2020 14:47

Good to know that at a time of pandemic, child hunger, thousands dying before their time that someone has such a gilded life that the colour of a cushion makes them react with disgust.

Deux · 26/10/2020 14:54

Have you sprayed anything on it? Like any of those stupid Mrs Hinch hacks like dilute zoflora or lenor? It’s just that if you have it may have reacted with the sunlight to accelerate fading.

unmarkedbythat · 26/10/2020 15:03

Unless something is specifically sold as resistant to fading in sunlight, I would expect it to fade in sunlight.

This!

£50 is a screeching bargain to have it recovered {Labour} for free. I'd jump at chance.

romeolovedjulliet · 26/10/2020 15:14

disgusting ? i was expecting a thread about standing in dog shit outside your front gate, now, that's disgusting. your 'problem' is mere irritating in my book.

thegreenlight · 26/10/2020 15:15

No, nothing been sprayed on. I mentioned bifolds as it means there is possibly more light than rooms within just a window and light at floor level - but these are very common now and not a valid reason for something to not perform as expected. I don’t know what you thought I meant. Bloody hell, there are some bitter fuckers on here. I was upset that a £600 piece of furniture now needs replacing. It does indeed still support my feet but I also bought it to be attractive so it’s not fulfilling that purpose. I could put my feet up on a cardboard box.
I am disgusted at the customer service I have received and they quality of an item that should have been much better. I felt angry as had just been on the phone for 3 hours (again) trying to sort it. I’m sure I’m not the only person who still has issues in their life more minor than dying of Covid that upsets them. Jesus Hmm

OP posts:
Completmentfille · 26/10/2020 15:23

But it isn't unattractive, it's just a bit lighter than it was when you bought it Confused

Shaniac · 26/10/2020 15:26

Very annoying it had faded so fast but its a high traffic item, in that its sat in direct sunlight constantly and is designed to have feet on it, the expectation is it will discolour over time. However one year is a very short ammount of time for an item design for such use to discolour. Do you still have paper work for when it was purchased as there may be small print?
If not you may have to just suck it up and pay the £50 recover fee.

To a pp who said the man was wrong as things can have a one off fault, sure one off faults can occur but when its down to the fabric most of them tend to be made from the same roll of fabric so it would be very highly unusual if the others feom the same batch are not Having this issue.

ConquestEmpireHungerPlague · 26/10/2020 15:40

Sunlight is sunlight, it doesn't matter what shape or size of window it comes through. Bizarre to spend £600 on a footstool and then not look after it. Although tbh it seems bizarre to me to spend £600 on a footstool full stop.

vanillandhoney · 26/10/2020 15:51

It doesn't need replacing, don't be so ridiculous.

thegreenlight · 26/10/2020 15:59

It’s pink! In real life it is pink! The blue has gone from it completely on the edges! I don’t understand how I am meant to look after it better? Not put my feet on it? Keep the blind down all day and sit in the dark? I spent that money as I wanted something to last - clearly I was in the wrong. I hate to think what some of your houses look like if you keep things that are ruined just because they are still serviceable on some level. I’m stepping out now - this place is crazy!

Dont be a twat now. A lot of us have homes full of serviceable imperfect furniture.

Jeez OP. People have just rightly pointed out YABU to put a foot stool in direct sunlight for a year and then complain that you don't know why. Why are you getting so defensive and then criticising others?

TeamLucille · 26/10/2020 16:14

It's pretty shocking frankly. It obviously is of very poor quality to face that quickly.

I wouldn't expect things to age that badly, direct sunlight or not. Half of my stuff is in direct sunlight, I don't spend my days with blinds and curtains closed, I would be very annoyed if soft furnishing faded that badly so quickly.

TeamLucille · 26/10/2020 16:15

I am always puzzled why someone clearly so busy with important things would waste time on a forum like MN, waste even more time reading about soft furnishing and then comment. Grin
billy1966 · 26/10/2020 16:21

Huge fading in one year OP.

I can imagine the annoyance.

CheetasOnFajitas · 26/10/2020 16:38

Pursue this further with DFS. You are right, a £600 footstool should not have faded to this extent within a year.

Push to have it recovered for free. You can’t dye it as the cover isn’t removable.

If it's serviceable it isn't ruined.

Shaniac · 26/10/2020 16:45

I'm an upholsterer (and I also have a textiles degree ) and a footstool has to have a martindale rating of at LEAST 25,000 rubs.

Why has this made me laugh? Grin. 25,000 rubs Grin
