I'm more than willing to be shouted down about the cost of hiring a trade and how you get what you pay for, but please hear me out and let me know if you think the cost is excessive, or if I'm just massively out of touch re what things actually cost (it's been a long time since I had anything done at all really).

Fairly large bathroom suite, consisting of shower cubicle, bath, toilet, sink and towel radiator. I have been quoted to rip out and replace all existing bathroom, make good the walls & decorate, retile the walls and floor, remove rubbish (ie skip) and replace the lighting with spotlights.

I am to supply all the tiles and bathroom suite myself, so this quote is for the cost of fitting/tiling/electrics/removal/skip.
The original cost was £8950, now discounted when I was horrified to £6850. So all in the bathroom is looking like it's going to cost in the region £10k. AIBU?

We are in the industry - but need a little bit more info. How many walls are being tiled etc?

NinaNannoo · 25/10/2020 20:45

I've recently had the family bathroom and an ensuite done and it was 11.5k

Both fully tiled with mid range furniture and suites

Trainchoose · 25/10/2020 20:48

Hmm seems excessive just for the fitting and disposal of the old suite Confused, but it can depends on the area, the size of the bathroom etc- tiling can add up quite quickly. I would get another quote to be honest, partly to compare, but as you aren't happy with this one, it's not a waste of the other ones time as you might go with them. If they knocked so much off of the asking price, seems like they're playing games with their pricing to make it seem like you're getting a bargain. We had our bathroom done for £2k including VAT, and including all of the materials etc, kept the old tiles mind.

Bluntness100 · 25/10/2020 20:49

Getting ours done early December cost is 12.5.

romeolovedjulliet · 25/10/2020 20:50

was it over costed to start with considering the price was dropped ? or are somethings not being done now to reflect the drop ?

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 25/10/2020 20:51

Where in the country are you? We’re in Surrey and had our (very small) bathroom and downstairs WC done 3 years ago, and we had quotes from £4K to £10k + VAT so not shocking imo

BrizNiz · 25/10/2020 20:52

Seems about right to me. It was roughly that for ours (bathroom and en suite). We live in the south west

WizWoz · 25/10/2020 20:56

We saved a lot by buying our own bath and fittings from a trade centre (cost £3k) and hiring a plumber to fit them. We also smashed off the existing tiles and removed the current fittings ourselves and took them to the tip. Then we bought our own tiles and hired a tiler, plasterer and electrician. We still spent £6k. If a company had done the full job and taken a cut on the materials I can see how it could have cost £10k.

sorrysaywhatnow · 25/10/2020 20:57

@notdawn sorry, there are four walls to be tiled up to half height.

@NinaNannoo did that include the cost of the toilets/bath/sink etc?

@ChocolateChipMuffin2016 I'm in East London, there seems to be such a huge variance in cost, which I suppose is to be expected when you have several trades involved

jetadore · 25/10/2020 20:59

Doesn't seem excessive, I think that's what you'll pay to get it done properly. We were likewise shocked when we got quoted 7k for ours. Did get some much cheaper quotes but they had the whiff of the Wild West about them. Dh ended up making a surprisingly competent job of it himself, although I did have to sacrifice having a towel rail!

Skigal86 · 25/10/2020 21:03

We had ours done three years ago, and it was £5000 plus the cost of the suite, which was about another £1000. V small bathroom, approx 6ft x 6ft, tiling on two and a half walls and plastering on the rest, new lights and some fairly significant work to fit the new shower and boxing in some dead space. We had to paint it though once they’d plastered but that was due to timing as they finished three days before Xmas!

OPTIMUMMY · 25/10/2020 21:09

Get two more quotes. We paid around £4500 for a multi trades company to strip everything back and take it all away, tile all walls and floors, install underfloor heating, build shelving insets, put in PVC ceiling and spot lights as well as the usual installation. It was 8 days labour and cost just over 4k - we supplied the materials and suite etc. This was a few years ago though. I’d say it depended on how long they thought it would take to do the job. They said most simple jobs were around £3k but ours was more because of the extra stuff we asked them to do.

snackarella · 25/10/2020 21:13

Just had our bathroom done - £2.5k for the fittings and suite, £5k for the rest - labour, electrician, decorator, tiler etc
Our bathroom is small

rumandbiscuits · 25/10/2020 21:18

I am getting my bathroom done this week bare in mind it is a very small bathroom. Replacing all wall tiles, replacing vinyl floor with vinyl, new bath, shower, sink, toilet and towel rail. He is ripping it all out and replacing and isn't suppling a skip. I've had 4 quotes ranging from £2000 (that guy was supplying a skip) to £750. We are going with the £750 guy and not because he's the cheapest (although that's a bonus!!!) but because he has been highly recommended to me and has five star reviews on his Facebook page, we've had to wait 6 months for him because he is so popular and the pictures of his work look amazing! I would recommend getting another quote!

RandomWordsandaNumber5 · 25/10/2020 21:19

We had our family bathroom re done last year. Reputable local firm.

Removed bath, toilet, basin and radiator. Replaced with walk in shower, new radiator, enclosed toilet and basin plus storage unit and surfaces. Fully tiled walls and floor.

Total cost just under £6000.

tinkerbellla · 25/10/2020 21:20

We had a bathroom with just a shower (they ripped out the bath), loo, sink and towel rail and it was around 11k in total. They sorted tiling the floors and walls but didn't paint and we had to buy in the suite. We are in the south east. They did a good job but it's always shockingly expensive. Looks great though!

roses2 · 25/10/2020 21:21

We're in NW London and have just booked someone in to do the same work as you next month. Your price sounds around the low price point. Our average quote was £8-12k. Builders are so busy at the moment it's crazy.

UnderperformingSeal · 25/10/2020 21:23

@rumandbiscuits £750 to fit a bathroom however small would make me think he's missed a zero off.

BurbageBrook · 25/10/2020 21:25

Is it a quote from an independent? I got a fairly small bathroom done including bath with taps, toilet, mirror, tiling of 2 walls, heated towel rack and electric shower for under 3k. Only thing I had to supply was the towels and floor tiles. I'm in Midlands and this was in January. Bathroom looks great.

BurbageBrook · 25/10/2020 21:26

Sorry I had to supply the wall tiles and floor tiles, obviously towels goes without saying!!

reluctantbrit · 25/10/2020 21:27

We just refitted the bathroom, 3x3m, a total of £18k, total re-fib, bad walls, new layout so new pipes and drainage.

OK, we went with lots of fittings on top of the range but we are under the impression it is not something we do all the time, we don't spend a lot on other stuff and I admit I absolutely love my new walk-in shower, heated flooring, controls/tab in the wall for the shower and bath and toilet and cupboards "floating" so easier to clean.

We also went with one company for everything, we just don't have the time and nerves to deal with several people and suppliers.

Nightmanagerfan · 25/10/2020 21:28

I’m in London and we did a small bathroom with high quality fittings and mid range tiles from Mandarin stone for £5,500 all in. I thought that was very reasonable

ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 25/10/2020 21:33

We got ours done around 12 months ago, it was £5.5K for our bathroom and our en-suite. All fully tiled and that was with everything in. The person who did it is DPs friend so he offered us a very discounted rate. I had quotes from other people and they wanted almost double. We are in the NW.

PhilCornwall1 · 25/10/2020 21:35

We're having ours done next week, keeping the existing suite as it's fine. So it's removal of existing tiles, shower and radiator. Retile all walls, fit new towel radiator, new shower with new plumbing and fit new shower screen. Total cost £1700. We've supplied the tiles (shed load of boxes) good shower, screen and radiator. That lot has come to just under a grand. Fitter is taking away all rubbish as well. Room
Is about 3m by 3m.

We had the shower circuit replaced as we want a higher KW shower, that's done and cost £350.

ChanklyBore · 25/10/2020 21:37

My bathroom was done four years ago - taking out old bathroom, disposal, refitting new one, supplying bath, shower, toilet, built in cabinets, sink, taps, flush mechanisms and flooring - fitting all of the above - tiling and replastering - radiator, towel rail, built in lighting spotlights, mirror lights shaving point and central lights. We bought the mirrors, new door and tiles ourselves. £2500 to bathroom fitter. £220 tiles, £25 mirror and £95 new door and lock. Total £2840.
